what about when "some ISP's" are going to block ssh access on your account and tell you that you can only have ssh access through a business account which costs double what you're paying? What about when "some ISP's" are actively blocking bit torrent on their whole network and tells you that "if the file you want is legitimate, you can download it from a website"? does it matter to them that you want to help seed the torrent for the new OpenSuSE 10.3 DVD? (using your bandwidth is not allowed under their Acceptable Use Policy). "some ISP's" want you to surf the web, check your email, and play online games. That's it.

Under such a system where they could actually restrict your access to anything else the Internet has to offer, well, that's like AOL. While I agree that the FCC is really not an agency we want on our Internet, the free market will undoubtedly destroy itself after hurting the consumer beyond repair. Net Neutrality is good for business. In the U.S.'s current climate of deregulation and monopolization, we need something there to protect the consumer.

  8. welcome to fascism on US Wants Courts to OK Warrantless Email Snooping · · Score: 1

look at the facts: most legislation is now written by industry trade groups. Congressheep usually pass them without reading them. The U.S. Congress chooses the corporate group over the people group. Our government has instilled fear in the people and used that fear to take away civil liberties. Our government has gone to war and given billions of dollars in contracts to companies our public officials were formerly associated with. Our government has suspended various clauses of the Constitution without oversight or repercussion.

according to the marxist encyclopaedia the nine hallmarks of fascism are:

    1. Right Wing: Fascists are fervently against: Marxism, Socialism, Anarchism, Communism, Environmentalism; etc - in essence, they are against the progressive left in total, including moderate lefts (social democrats, etc). Fascism is an extreme right wing ideology, though it can be opportunistic.

    2. Nationalism: Fascism places a very strong emphasis on patriotism and nationalism. Criticism of the nation's main ideals, especially war, is lambasted as unpatriotic at best, and treason at worst. State propaganda consistently broadcasts threats of attack, while justifying pre-emptive war. Fascism invariably seeks to instill in its people the warrior mentality: to always be vigilant, wary of strangers and suspicious of foreigners.

    3. Hierarchy: Fascist society is ruled by a righteous leader, who is supported by an elite secret vanguard of capitalists. Hierarchy is prevalent throughout all aspects of society - every street, every workplace, every school, will have its local Hitler, part police-informer, part bureaucrat - and society is prepared for war at all times. The absolute power of the social hierarchy prevails over everything, and thus a totalitarian society is formed. Representative government is acceptable only if it can be controlled and regulated, direct democracy (e.g. Communism) is the greatest of all crimes. Any who oppose the social hierarchy of fascism will be imprisoned or executed.

    4. Anti-equality: Fascism loathes the principles of economic equality and disdains equality between immigrant and citizen. Some forms of fascism extend the fight against equality into other areas: gender, sexual, minority or religious rights, for example.

    5. Religious: Fascism contains a strong amount of reactionary religious beliefs, harking back to times when religion was strict, potent, and pure. Nearly all Fascist societies are Christian, and are supported by Catholic and Protestant churches.

    6. Capitalist: Fascism does not require revolution to exist in captialist society: fascists can be elected into office (though their disdain for elections usually means manipulation of the electoral system). They view parliamentary and congressional systems of government to be inefficient and weak, and will do their best to minimize its power over their policy agenda. Fascism exhibits the worst kind of capitalism where corporate power is absolute, and all vestiges of workers' rights are destroyed.

    7. War: Fascism is capitalism at the stage of impotent imperialism. War can create markets that would not otherwise exist by wrecking massive devastation on a society, which then requires reconstruction! Fascism can thus "liberate" the survivors, provide huge loans to that society so fascist corporations can begin the process of rebuilding.

    8. Voluntarist Ideology: Fascism adopts a certain kind of "voluntarism;" they believe that an act of will, if sufficiently powerful, can make something true. Thus all sorts of ideas about racial inferiority, historical destiny, even physical science, are supported by means of violence, in the belief that they can be made true. It is this sense that Fascism is subjectivist.

    9. Anti-Modern: Fascism loathes all kinds of modernism, especially creativity in the arts, whether acting as a mirror for life (where it does not conform to the Fascist ideal), or expressing deviant or innovative points of view. Fascism invariably burns books and victimis

    World in Conflict $50
    Enemy Territory: Quake Wars $50
    The Orange Box $45
    Crysis Collector's Edition $60

that's $565 dollars excluding taxes and shipping for games that I bought this year.
That's money that really was meant for other things like food. As a PC gamer, I need to pay for upgrades to my computer to even play some of these.
And, I did. I spent over $700 this year for upgrades. next year, I plan to spend another $600.

Games really are expensive. eight games is the whole cost of a high-end console these days.

I can only hope that EA isn't thinking about cutting quality or jobs in the US. The money really needs to come out of the advertising budget.
EA should invest more in the G4 network to people who don't have it. It seems like a paradox though.

I'm a gamer. I know how to download games from Internet sources. I choose to buy games instead because I want to support them. I want more games.
That said, games used to be a much better value.

You would pay $30 for a game that would include over 60 hours of epic gameplay.
EA's latest SP/MP game, though multi-player, included 6 hours of single player content.

Here, EA is my brilliant idea. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST:
take a game like MOH:Airborne. Separate it.
Offer a single-player only version. Offer a multiplayer-only version. Offer a collectors edition with both and added content. Charge the $50 for it you were going to charge.
Charge $25 for the single-player only version. Charge $35 for the multiplayer-only version due to the associated costs of services.

Everyone gets what they want. You still get paid.

I buy some EA games every year. It's not about delivering everything to everyone.

Also, get your online distribution system geared up. I prefer buying games like that. Steam is the perfect model.
I don't need to worry about discs or keys. Steam handles it all for me. And, I don't have to keep the game installed. I can uninstall it and reinstall it when I want.
I always wanted to go back and re-play old games. I never had the disc or keys after so many years. Steam has me covered.

that's not the free market you lunatic!
the free market would make it impossible for ISPs to charge tolls to Internet companies like google.
    competition would disallow it.

Ultimately, this is very bad for consumers. ISPs want a larger piece of the pie. They will ransom it from those companies which actually are profitable.
Despite the current peering agreements, ISPs want to charge extra.

That's like buying a hamburger value meal and then getting charged extra for the drink and fries which are supposed to come with the value meal.
ISPs want to charge extra for something they have been getting paid for all along.

The issue lays in AT&T and Comcast not being as profitable as apple or amazon.com

    Here is the perfect analogy:
Let's assume selling cupcakes is legal on buses comcast sells bus passes to amazon.com. amazon rides the bus to sell his goods to consumers who also ride the bus. amazon paid for the bus passes. the consumers paid their bus fair. The consumers like the cupcakes. amazon is making very good money.
now, comcast wants to charge amazon a fee for getting out of his seat on the bus. They figure, amazon is making money from our buses, we should get some of that. AT&T also wants to charge amazon for using their streets!

    Here's an even better analogy:
You run a small bakery in Liberty City. You have paid for your incorporation. You have paid your taxes. Fat Tony comes in and demands that you pay him a small fee to "ensure that your bakery doesn't get destroyed". After all, you're making money in his neighborhood.

    Here's another:
Cracky Joe is a neighborhood crack dealer. He runs the streets. Enrique Cocaína comes to town with his fine white powder. Cracky Joe pays Enrique a visit. He wants a cut of Enrique's powder profits. After all, these are Cracky Joe's STREETS!
