  1. It's like an Amiga without a keyboard! on Indrema vs Xbox vs PS2 · · Score: 1

Come on guys! Sounds like the Indremeda is a homecomputer (not unlike Amiga/MSX/C64) running Linux, but sold without a keyboard. This thing will get kids programming their first "Hello world!" program (probably in Perl)!
OpenSource games might not come out that often, but what about the demos? We could see a demo-scene coming up for this thing. The DVD drive will be used to store massive amounts of data (amateur CGI-movies anyone?) and the internet connection will allow for some pretty cool on-line gaming (playing NeverWinter Nights/Q3A on your bigscreen TV, sitting on your favorite sofa with a Coke in one hand and coke in the other ;)
The return of homecomputers is upon us! Grab your free SDK's ASAP and start coding!
I'll just sit here and wait for all your cool stuff to be released as the code-illiterate(sp?) game-nut I am..

  2. Too little, too late... on Computer, Arise From Your Grave · · Score: 1

One thing I've been missing here:
Even if emulators, ROMS and the like are illegal, what are the big companies going to do about it? Has anyone ever sat down and counted the sheer number of ROM/emu sites? There must be at least hundreds of them! So even if ROMS/emulators are illegal, they'll never disappear. C&D letters won't do any good, and many (most?) emu-sites are based outside of the US, so it's an international issue.
Whatever the lawyers say, us mortal geex will always find the ROM sites, and download the games we used to play on those old consoles (Streets of Rage 2 and Chronotrigger anyone?)just for good ol' days' sake. I played games on my 16-bit consoles 'till they died. In the end, most games wouldn't even work anymore (downside of cartridges, as you all know)and all my Zelda (the original 8-bit version) savegames vanished when the battery died. I liked the game, but not enough to spend my hard-earned on another NES and another Zelda cartridge.
Speaking of emulation: who knows a good site where I can find MSX emulators, diskimages and ROMS? For the people who don't know: the MSX was a Z80 based 8-bit homecomputer, running Microsoft eXtended BASIC.. It had all kinds of cool games, among my favorites are the original (!) Metal Gear (not that crappy NES version) and Hydlide. Does anyone remember Konami's SD Snatcher?
But I'm trailing off.. in short:
I don't understand what companies are planning to do to get rid of all those nasty illegal ROM sites. There are just too many to make a difference! Besides, for every ROM-site they get shut down, two others come up. It's pointless. I do have respect for the people responsible for all those great games I wasted my youth on, but give me a break. I'm broke. If I want to play an 10-year old game, I'll download it. From somewhere.

  3. Sony were newcomers too, remember? on Michael Abrash On The Xbox · · Score: 1

I keep hearing stuff like 'MS is not gonna make it 'cause they don't have any experience working in the console business.' What kind of BS is this?! A few years ago some entertainment company released a 32-bit cd-based console, which took the two BIG console-kings completely by surprise, and is now the most popular console (right after GameBoy). Sound familiar? I'm not saying that the X-Box _will_ have the same impact, all I'm saying is that it _might_ have the same impact. Everybody, think back. Nintendo and Sega rule the console-gaming world, and Sega's the first one to release a mighty 32-bit console, the Saturn. It has all the good stuff: innovative design, VERY good sprite/2D handling, multiple processors (now where have I heard that before?), etc. In the meantime Sony is working on the PSX (old times, old name). No one expected the PSX to completely blow away Nintendo's & Sega's machines, but it happened. It could happen again.. Just for the record: I go where Namco and Square are going. Trust the true gaming pros...

  4. Something I've been missing here... on Slashdot Database Compromised! · · Score: 1

Everybody here assumes that these Dutch guys were the only ones trying to crack /., but what if, like, 3 or 4 '133t h4x0rs' have been trying to do the very same thing for weeks, getting closer every day, with bad intentions? In that case I'm happy my fellow countrymen got in first and notified /.. Slashdot can be DOS-attacked, you know. And what's in it for the kiddies that did it? Prestige, fame, admittance to the H4x0rs ClubHouse.. just my lousy 0.2 Euros.

  5. It's the _games_ that matter! on John Carmack On Consoles Vs. Personal Computers · · Score: 1

I also own both PC and PSX. My PC is being used for all kinds of stuff: trying out WinME and SuSE, playing Quake3, UT and Diablo II etc. My Playstation however has only two purposes in life: to play Square RPG's on (bigscreen hooked up to stereo kix azz) and to kick peoples buttocks! There's nothing as fun as playing games like Tekken, Soul Blade or Street Fighter Alpha 3 with 4 people or more. The tension, the competition (winner stays) the frustration in the opponents face when I'm at 15+ straight wins.. irreplaceable. Don't get me wrong, I love deathmatch! There's just one thing missing: you don't see your opponents face. I want to see his/her face when the inevitable announcement comes: "Perfect!" That's what makes gaming fun: showing your skills to other people. The 'look what I can do' feeling. Shooting someones head off is fun, but IMO not as fun as bashing him senseless with a 15-hit combo he's never seen before. So, in conclusion: a PC is cool. A console is cool. But to get complete gaming satisfaction, you need both. One for hours of lone gaming with the lights dimmed.. and one for beat 'em ups fests where the weakest leaves crying.

  6. Re:why edit? on Tenchi on Cartoon Network · · Score: 1

I was just wondering.. why would they edit a series/show/movie to be suitable for kids if it was never _meant_ to be watched by kids? Isn't this a gigantic insult to the creators of the series? Like, you made a pretty cool movie, but we don't think adults would like it, so we'll just cut the thing up and turn it into a (terrible in most cases) kiddieshow.. yech! Disrespect to the editors!
