    1) Vote

There is alot of free AND LEGAL music on the internet.

    Examples...

    1) www.epitonic.com - Lots of Electronica, Techno, Garage, Folk, and Punk... Supplied by the bands themselves and/or the labels.

    2) Nugs.net - Only of interest to people that like the Dead, Phish, WSP, and bands like that. Live shows. If you like music like this, and recordings of live shows, its good.

    3) eTree

    4) Fan Sites - Pick a band. Find their site. Hang out for a day. You'll find out about stuff.

    ---

Granted, the majority of the stuff I listen to is the "damn dirty hippie crap", and those "damn dirty hippies" are particularly good about sharing the music. I guess being a hippie isn't that bad after all?

    ---

No matter what the genre of music is, the point still stands....

The music is out there, and if you really like it that much, you will find it. If you don't care enough to actually look around for it, is it really big of a loss if you can't leech it?

Way back in college for some English class or another, we read some essay by a Scientist-Nun (Or Nun-Scientist, if you prefer).

The point of her article was that God started ("created", so to speak) the process of life and evolution.

    Seems reasonable to me.

Its the best of both worlds...
-A nun that accepts the scientific facts as we now understand them
-A scientist that accepts the fact that there are some things that we can't measure and/or reproduce in the lab

(I wish I could remember her name. Or, that I wasn't too lazy to actually find a link for everyone.)

If this Forrest Mims guy is a Creationist/Scientist in the spirit of the Nun-Scientist, then he can call BS at "Scientific American" and I'll agree. If however, he is a Creationist/Scientist that rejects accepted science out of hand, then I would have to agree with the magazine.

Just guessing here, but I think the grandparent post was trying to make reference to the massive subsidies that G8 countries give to their farmers and other "raw material" industries.

Many Southern-Hemisphere countries do not have the infrastructure to turn their relatively abundant raw materials into processed goods. (Parent post does correctly point out the lack of infrastructure in these countries.)

The question then becomes: If the G8 countries have the raw materials and the infrastructure to turn those goods into processed goods, why do they still subsidize their farmers to the extent they do?

For an example of the level of subsidies provided by one of the G8 countries, you can view the Environmental Working Group Farm Subsidy Database. A summary for the US is located here: http://www.ewg.org/farm/region.php?fips=00000

Interesting quote from the page mentioned above: "Nationwide, ten percent of the biggest (and often most profitable) subsidized crop producers collected 71 percent of all subsidies, averaging $34,800 in annual payments between 1995 and 2002. The bottom 80 percent of the recipients saw only $846 on average per year."

    ---
Of course, I could be mistaken on what the grandparent post was trying to say. If this is the case, just ignore me. Or, ignore me anyway. I'm cool with that.
