  1. Re:Neither MSN.com nor MSN broadband needs IE on Firefox Momentum Slows · · Score: 1

It just seems that the 'average' user, who I believe is the majority of users who use MSN, AOL, and other all-inclusive ISP packages, where your sign-in, email, etc. are somewhat tightly integrated together, just use whatever default applications are available/given to them. They do not upgrade or change their browser. I use DSL with a local ISP, so I do not have much experience with MSN, AOL, etc. This is just my observation.

  2. Re:So just to review on Firefox Momentum Slows · · Score: 1

I believe there is a group called the MSN users?. Doesn't MSN require the use of IE to log into the netowrk? I am guessing the average MSN user doesn't know how to switch browsers, much less determine if one is secure or not. Which brings to mind another group, the AOL user....

  3. Fedex also like HP on Recent Grads and Experience Beyond the Desktop? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Turns out that Fedex only hires within its ranks. So there is essentially no way to get into the Fedex programming core without spending a year delivering packages. After that year, you would be free to transfer to a group that more naturally fit your skills.

HP was (and I still believe is) like this. I started out as a process operator making parts for printers. After two years and some college I applied for a new position as a database/software tech within HP and was hired. Soon after that I was offered a programming position with a different company (networking with friends of friends) and left HP entirely.

Don't expect to land in a high-paying dream job unless you are in the top 0.1%, have a masters degree, and there are empolyers banging your door down to hire you, as was the case with my brother. (lucky bastard!)

  6. Re:Thats why I like Maxtor...... on Have Fujitsu Harddrives Been Failing in Record Numbers? · · Score: 1

I had used Fujitsu hard drives for years with little problems until last year. We had 4 20G IDE drives installed on a software raid 5 system serving media files. After about 9 months of use, one drive failed. It was replaced, and 1 month after that another one failed. In the end all drives were replaced with two in the array being replaced twice. Initially I thought there was a vibration problem, until we switched from IDE to SCSI and removed all the IDE drives. Have not had a problem since. We also use other sizes of Fujitsu drives, but have only had problems with this batch of 20Gs.

Has anyone else had similar problems with the 20s?

  7. They are seeking bigger fish on IBM Wants CPU Time To Be A Metered Utility · · Score: 1

I used to work at a company that either owned or leased their own supercomputer for testing whatever it was they tested. I am guessing that unless this thing was used everyday, leasing shared time on a supercomputer as opposed to purchasing one would give a better return on investment assuming that the leased computer always had the latest technology, thus eliminating upgrade and maintenance costs. Perhaps IBM is looking for this type of a market as opposed to a company looking to hook up 200 terminals to run word processing and spread sheet programs.

Here's a quick hint. The U.S. government tried to do this in the 30's with alcohol. It ended up being one of the single greatest failures of the government and has created criminal and social problems that live on today.

I can see Ad campaigns in the next 10 years after all this fails stating 'Don't copy digital media, don't drink and drive. Do you know what format of media your children are watching?'
