Reading through it more I see that what he's pushing for, EFI, is stored on "a special reserved area of the hard drive."

Is the DVD out yet? Well yes, but only in the non-subtitled, Japanese language only, non-Region 1 version.
So unless you happen to have a region-less DVD player and know Japanese then I'm afraid your point isn't that valid in this case.

Since the Region 1 DVD isn't available the comparison is now between a "crappy-assed ultra-compressed version with a monochannel soundtrack at 320x240 resolution" and not watching it at all for several months. And even then, it's quite likely that finding a copy of it to rent might be a little more than difficult. (I don't know how Nashville is for renting anime, and I personally won't buy something on DVD without having at least seen it first.)

(Side Note #1: I don't know what you've been watching, but most copies I've seen are a) bigger than 320x240, and b) stereo sound, granted you're going to have to like subtitles. Hell, I haven't seen anyone with a copy of a movie in ages that hasn't been considerably bigger than that size and stereo sound. Unless of course we're talking the 'camcorder in a theatre' style release, which are just painful to watch no matter what the resolution.)

(Side Note #2: Whether or not he was advocating never buying a copy is another matter. I personally have no issues with watching a movie that's never going to be shown in theatres around where I live in order to decide whether or not I'd want to buy the DVD when it comes out. But getting it to replace a DVD? Well, then I don't think many people are going to be arguing about which format is superior.)

  4. Re:Damn critics... on Review: Cowboy Bebop · · Score: 2, Interesting

Don't take what the slashdot editors have to say about it, read the actual negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Something pops up fairly quickly: Most don't dislike it because it's a cartoon. Many of the bad reviews go on about how good the artwork and visuals are. (Most of the time anyways, as a few also complain about the lack of coherency in the quality in several scenes.)
Most of the bad reviews dislike it because they found it long, drawn out, and boring.

Now think about it for a moment. Put aside all the "They hate it because it's a non-Disney cartoon!" stereotypes. Think about it.
Have you seen the movie yet? I have, and I'm afraid I can agree. It's not a bad movie really, but it is slightly more drawn out than it needs to be.

Did you read the first link? As of right now this is what I get.

Now, let's look through the page. Nope, Moore doesn't appear anywhere. Ok, this seems fine.

Oh. Wait. That paragraph that's triggering the Google hit looks familiar. Thankfully there's a link to where the page's creator got it. Let's follow it, shall we?

Hmmmm... Well, what do you know? She got the paragraph from the page we are at, which, if you check the link to the original article on that page, got it from Mr. Moore's essay.

Hmmmmm.... Let's take a look at the rest of the links on this 1st page of results, shall we?

Well, the second one makes an explicit mention of "JimMoore?'s idea" right in the Google summary. So it's out.

The third one seems a little confused as to what the hell it means by it, but it references "Joi Ito" which, having read the Register article, means that it's a reference to Moore's definition.

Numbers 4 and 5 are links to different pages as the same site for number 1.

6 links to a sports article from the Palm Beach Post.

7 & 8 link to "Library Planet discussion on Second Superpower" which, if you follow the link on the page, ends up being Mr. Moore's article again.

9 links to comments on an article called "The Second Superpower" which, if you go back to the site's main page, turns out to m=be Mr. Moore yet again.

That leaves just site number 10 on the first page. It's a historical discussion on the Truman doctrine and the Cold War.

So: 8 out of the first 10 results returned by "Second Superpower" -moore reference Mr. Moore. The other two have nothing to do with the definition referred to in the Register article.

It seems to me that knowing how to use Google has little to do with why the authors were unable to find it.

It's not just that the fan is big enough that it blocks access to the slot, it's that it's output (intake? So, with those USB headers, your MB just became a 3 PCI slot version. Now, you may not have lots of things plugged in, but my 5-PCI slot MB has only one slot free, and that may not last long as AC'97 sound sounds like crap.

Just because you don't use them all doesn't mean that other people's slots aren't used up. Face it, the GeForce FX may be impressive graphics wise, but in the end, it's just poorly designed.

    You're exactly right.

I think what the previous poster is thinking of is ID3v1 tags, which are located at the end of the MP3, so you don't get them until the MP3s finish downloading (and what's more, they have a fixed size so they're easy to check, but that's besides the point)

Now, this bug involves ID3v2 tags. ID3v2 tags are located at that start of the MP3, which is why when you add one to a MP3 playing in Winamp you get a brief pause, it has to add it to the start of the file. Therefore, any MP3 with an ID3v2 tag will already have the potential of compromising you by the time it's downloaded enough to play part of the song if you preview them using Winamp.

I don't know how Explorer checks file attributes on MP3s, but I'm assuming that you're already in danger by this time too.
