They're working so hard on the new version that they have no time for grammar! :)

Note: flaming nvidia won't get the drivers fixed quicker. This is just a note so that other people don't waste time trying to get the nvidia drivers to work.

I couldn't get the newest nvidia drivers to work with xfree 4.0.1. I thought maybe my configuration was wrong, but when I reinstalled xfree 4.0 it worked fine. I would have thought that the xfree people would check to see if they were breaking someone else's drivers!

Has anyone gotten the .93 drivers to work with xfree 4.0.1?

  4. A bigger problem... on Colleges Urged To Ban Telnet And FTP · · Score: 5

I would ban windows networking first. If you go online in any dorm, you'll see a whole host of people happily sharing their hard drives and printers with full permissions. Telnet and FTP take some effort to set up, at least on win9x.

The real solution is to ban nothing, and try to educate the users about security. Little things like, "turn off inetd," "disable sharing," "if you do share, give it a good password," etc. Colleges throw persistant megabit connections at their students without so much as a flyer for common security issues.

So, has it been fixed in CVS, or are you guys going to make me download it to find out? :P

I can't believe people are willing to buy 200$ mp3 players with one 100$ one-hour flash card, when MD recorders cost 250$ and discs cost 2.50 a piece for 74 minutes or rewritable goodness.

I write a lot of my mp3s to minidisc with almost no loss of quality. Minidisc is 284kbps, so it can handle mp3s with ease.

I find that Java forces me to think about structure when I program. Sure, it means you can't rattle off a quicky program, but sometimes quicky programs become "mission critical" and turn in to big hulking mounds of spaghetti. Java forces you to create the most efficient code possible: what data do I need? who should have access to it? Where should I leave room for extensions?

Case in point: I wrote a software program that decodes satellite data and parses the output. I was able to add a whole host of features by touching a single class for each case: support for multiple data formats in one file, extensible support for any future data format, cleaner file handling routines, new ways of gathering data. I never had to go back and rework major portions of code. This assumes you design the program well to begin with :)

Another feature that goes untouted in Java is error handling. The "try{} catch()" method of trapping errors is pure genius. I can effectively trap and collect any errors and find out where they occured in the stack trace. Because all of the errors are caught in one place (the catch statements), I don't have to clutter my code with error checking. EOF? Don't worry about it, if it happens I can catch it later!

Lastly, having a main() function for _every_ class makes testing a piece of cake. If I create a main() function that tests the class, and it passes, I know I never have to debug that class and I can use its interface without worry. If something goes wrong in a class I can go back to the main function and play around with it until it works.

Oh yeah, and I need not deal with pointers or memory management :)

I aimed it my friend eight times in a row, and he sucked everyone one of those time. Besides that, there is freecell, minesweeper, avantgo, and some other cool games. Color sucks too much batteries, and mp3s are pointless because you can only carry around the equivalent of 1 CD or so with you. And mpegs on a palm-sized device are pointless.

As for storage space, you should get a Medea VideoRAID (find it on www.videoguys.com). These things can do 24 MB/s sustained, even when the drive is full.
