what would be _really_ cool is if you gave window edges infinite depth. Think about it: if an individual window could lock the mouse inside it, the menubar issue goes away, along with some other problems. There would have to be a way to get _out_ of a window (hold down middle button to get out?), but this would solve many Fitts's Law problems with minimal rewriting.
(I'm not trying to be a troll, it's just I hate when people see only themselves and not other people's perspectives)
It's views like this that prevent OSS from moving ahead of Windows. Read my lips: text interfaces suck for everyguy's day-to-day work.
Imagine: I can type "rm -rf junkdir" or I can click and hit delete. One requires memorization of a command, its parameters, and typing. The other requires a click and a keystroke. A text interface is NOT THE BEST for _most_ user situations!
Talk to someone who doesn't like computers and you will see what I'm talking about.
make sure you DELETE your OLD PREFERENCES!!!! I can't stress enough how many weird problems crop up because you have out of date mozilla preferences lying aroung. If you are using linux, do an rm -rf ~/.mozilla. If you are under windows, I don't know what you should do. Mozilla is a constantly evolving project, and the preferences are constantly changing.
But since you _aren't_ rock steady, wouldn't you fall over unless you were sitting down? Remember, you need to perceive motion in order to stay upright!
GUI design has been well researched by Apple and others, and the developers of the new desktops should actually read this stuff. It seems that most of the features included in both desktop environments seem to be added because they are "cool" or they are what a particular developer thinks is best. If everyone makes sure that they are playing by these rules, we can ensure that both environments are superior in speed and ease-of-use to both windows and mac.
In this case he is a film geek and likes to produce films.
Ahh... this old explanation. Look at this page on the IMDB. Now look at the number of films he's directed versus the number of films he's produced. A "film geek" would not have gone from 1977 to 1999 without having directed a single movie. Sure, he wrote some stuff (along with other people), but that's being a writer, not a film geek. And sure, he's produced a lot of stuff, but that's being a business man who likes movies, not a film geek.
Compare his record to Steven Spielberg, a true film geek. He's _directed_ no less than 18 films in the same period Lucas made 0.
...they wouldn't do it if it didn't sell. Ads are created to get revenue, and I'm sure companies have found that, bluntly, bigger tits sell more games. It would be interesting to see _what_ games women buy, and how those ads in particular are advertised. For instance, there are no naked chicks in Myst ads, I'm sure. As for action games, the percentage of female gamers is so small as to be considered insigificant to advertisers. Why target a group that makes up less than one percent of your buyers?
The truth is that games are easier to program for boys. We like points, action, motion, and triggers. Women (stereotypically, but also truthfully) like conversations, complex rewards, stories, and... thinking. My sister, for instance, doesn't see the point of Quake: in her mind, you get killed only to come back again. What's the point of getting killed if there are no repercutions?
I would think RPGs would be better suited to the female (tm) mentality, but we all remember what the pictures in the D&D books were like.
Hey, why don't some women prove Jon Katz wrong and voice their opinions? What games do _you_ want to play?
I think aardvaark here is right. It's not how often it crashes, but how well the system recovers. When Windows crashes (which it does, even on a "clean" system), you want to pull your hair out. When linux crashes (ususally because you did something wrong:)), the program dies and you are safe. My computer time has been much less stressful and exasperating ever since I stopped using windows.
hopefully it won't get _too_ much coverage

The whole thing screams "copyright infringment," which is too bad because the it is so funny. If it gets too popular, the site operator is gonna get a "pull this pirated crap down NOW" email from some friendly studio lawyers... With that in mind, try to keep the thing semi-quiet:)
that and in this case we _own_ the "store" (dvd movie). Would someone object to a person getting a key made to a lock they already own? I think not. If I buy a dvd, I have every right to do with the data what I see fit, as long as I don't give it to other people
I don't see any instructions or markings on the thing that would describe _how_ you set it up. Do you twist it one way to increase the multiplier? How do you know how far to twist it? what if you twisted it a decent amount, and it thought you wanted a 10000GHZ machine? Or if you wanted a.1 volt increase, and got a 10 volt increase? The dip switch solution seems more precise to me.
I'm still trying to find out if the razor boomslang mouse (www.razorzone.com) works under linux. It's also a USB w/ ps/2 adapter mouse (so it's not _totally_ OT...), but I haven't gotten a straight answer from anyone, including news groups and the company itself. Please, if you know if this mouse works (including the wheel), reply or email!
I came late to the conversation, but I hope someone has an answer for this question. I've bought from CDuniverse.com before... so what should I do? What are the chances that my card has actually been stolen? I suppose I could just watch my balance carefully (it's a debit card), but I'd rather know quickly whether this is a scam or my number really is loose.
Lucas has repeatedly said that that he wants DVD to be the "ultimate repository" (or something) for Star Wars. Meaning, he says, that he doesn't want to release _any_ of the movies on DVD until they are ALL DONE. Yes, that's half a decade away.
Everyone knows this is stupid. Everyone knows this is greedy. Everyone knows that there will be HDDVD by then. Everyone doesn't like it. And there's nothing we can do about it. Lucas is a greedy asshole, pure and simple.
Just look at the Special Editions. They suck complete ass. All of the additional effects stand out like badly computer-generated sore thumbs. Not only that, but he changed some key plot points, including Han Solo's now-justified killing of Greedo, and several eight-frame cuts of violence.
What can I do besides complain? Well, I have decided to boycott lucasfilm completely. This includes: 1. All Star Wars, VHS or otherwise 2. All cute star wars toys. If you have 'em, burn 'em. 3. Anything produced by Lucas, including Indiana Jones. 4. tell other people to do the same. 5. Encourage people to not buy the bootlegs.
As much as you may like Star Wars, you should not allow one individual to control the distribution of his most popular films. I would think that the mostly Libertarian/. readers would agree with me here. Interviewer after interviewer has asked Lucas (or is it £ua$?) why he won't release the films on DVD. He always says, "well, I'd like to wait." Who cares about what you want, you selfish asshole! I can just imagine the studio execs pleading with him, trying to get him to relent.
But no. Push has come to shove, and we must shove hard.
We have reached a sort of plateau in computer game graphics: we can squeeze X triangles on the screen in any one frame (around 10K, given q3a's r_speeds), and render them damn fast. The problem is, the CPU is still doing the T&L in most cases, and that puts two limits on current games: 1. We can't have any more than X triangles per frame, limiting geometric complexity. 2. Nearly all (90%) of the computing power is going toward rendering, leaving precious little left for AI, physics, or anything else.
The future is obviously in cards with T&L, and it will become clear in the next year that games that expect a T&L card will run MUCH faster. With a T&L engine, we can now fit many more tris on the screen (5x? 10x?) at the nearly the same frame rates. We can also have much more complex worlds.
So while the MAXXXXX might be ok for now, it will lose out to the GeForce. Maybe not today, but it will. While most companies are pushing fill rate to beyond the max (1600x1200 at 120 fps? who needs that?), the geforce is the only card that will could run Myst in real time at 60 fps.
Don't knock it until you've tried it. The nVidia GeForce is just 2 TNT's + T&L. While everyone likes a brand new chip, this is a costeffective solution that works. Remember that silicon is cheap; have you been to a beach lately?
Let's _embrace_ fads and disposable technology. Yeah, that's a real great use of our Earth's precious resources. If there is one thing that will be America's downfall, it is the ugly and rampant consumerism that has gripped us in the past few years. Yes, we have money to burn, but we should not burn it on palm pilots and mp3 players. The manifesto implies that these "gizmos" will be short-lived and numerous. In other words, they are worthless junk. There are so many things that money can buy that are _real_ and _valuable_. Sure, buy art. Art is good. But don't buy a palm V because your palm iii (which replaced the palm pro) is now "passe" (avec accent ague). We have to move _away_ from gizmoism (ism!), not towards it.
Dot pitch doesn't refer to the space between pixels, it refers to the space between the red, green, and blue points on your monitor. With a good monitor, you get.26 MM dot pitch. 1/5 of a millimeter between the colors. Pixels-per-inch is something else entirely.
When I saw the headline I assumed he had died of a heart attack or some other natural cause. Well, I guess no one can say he died too young! He certainly left his mark on the world, and will be missed.
I would say you proved the wrong point! _Because_ theater owners are more concerned with cost than quality, they're would be more likely to go for the cheap solution: MV48. Going digital would require major changes and lots of expensive equipment, whereas MV48 requires a quick upgrade to your projectors and nothing else.
I think the cost of maintaining the digital side of things (imagine seeing the BSOD in the middle of The Blair Witch Project? I did, once) outweighs the cost of printing on film. Think of the cost required to make the transition.
...is buy a wrist pad for your keyboard AND mouse. A lot of people only buy a keyboard pad and don't realize their mouse hand is doing the exact same thing. I used to get pains after playing too much quake, but as soon as I got a pad the pain went away. It's cheap and effective.
If you have a 3M mousepad that won't work with a wrist-rest, do what I do: clip it on top of a pad that _does_ have a rest:P
I was expecting the server to be about the size of a monitor, but in the spec sheet it says it is _7_ inches on a side! For that amount of desk real estate you get a lot for your money!

See the GNOME install project. Doesn't handle errors well, but installs most things fine.
