    How is this article the least bit interesting. Everyone who does not live in a cave knows about the Microsoft trial, and the link goes to a 1/2 page story with almost no information. There's really nothing to *discuss* in this story.

    I'm starting to think the /. crew is intentionally posting lame stories to keep the trolls amused.

    I will probably get flamed for saying this, but I fail to see how reverse engineering a company's product will "increasing the capital value of the product"
    Digital Convergance gives away their hardware on the premise that the user will use the product in the manner it was intended. Their only profit comes from selling targeted ad data.
    By reverse engineering the :CueCat you are effectively robbing DC of their only source of revenue. How does this help the company?

    Here's a solution:

    1. Build your own PC and put whatever OS you want on it.

    2. Purchase a computer from a reputable local shop. You will most likely get a higher quality machine, more hardware configuration options, *and* your choice of OS's. Not to mention you're supporting the growth of local commerce and small mom and pop shops

    If the source was ripped from a DVD, the ACT itself of ripping the DVD would violate the DMCA. I believe the distribution of the 2nd generation digital copy would fall under standard copyright law. I could be wrong though. Maybe someone out there could answer.

    This has already been done. Anyone with a relatively fast connection (Cable or DSL) can go into an IRC channel and download most movies that are still in the theatres. DVD is not the only way to watch movies. At this point however, it is the best way to watch movies at home, because like most other analog formats, digitizing a movie STILL won't look great if the source came from a guy in a movie theatre with a palmcorder.

    I don't see what the issue is here.

    It seems to me that pay-per-play is working quite well, thriving even. But i guess you've never been to a "Movie Theatre" or a "Blockbuster"
