  2. Re:Customer Support. on Tech Support: Sucking Even More · · Score: 1

I work in an environment where clients rent areas for meetings and seminars. We supply a limited amount of equipment, which includes computers, projection systems, and even the capability to provide a satelite downlink or teleconferencing. The main problem with the way this works is that often, clients will bring in thier own equipment like computers, and expect that you will automatically be thier tech support. When you tell them "I am sorry, but that is not our equipment, we can't help you set it up" they seem absolutely floored by your response. It is also just outrageous that absolutely none of them know how to work their computers. Support people take alot of crap from their customers. If a client arrives 5 min before their presentation time, and expects you to work some sort of magic, then they are just sorely mistaken. They can't understand the concept of testing the equipment before assuming that it will all work just fine. Is it too much to ask that some yuppie arrives with ample time to hook his computer up so that he can show his silly powerpoint slideshow? I think not. If something goes wrong, you are always the first to blame. The same kinda thing goes for the people who do tech support on the phone. Rude, ignorant customers drive people in support to hate their jobs. Low pay doesn't help the situation.

  3. Why was this modded to +2? on Linux for the PlayStation2:It's Official · · Score: 1

Literally everything you said here is wrong. For starters, there are only mild differences between NTSC-UC and NTSC-J. My American Televesions will work with ANY Japanese NTSC products. China, Europe, and a few other places use the PAL format. That is not compatible with NTSC. Often, you can get a picture from a PAL device on an NTSC television, but it doesn't look right. And to answer some people's questions about territorial lockouts... That's easy... Money! If you published a game in the US, would you want it to be imported to Japan to be sold? Maybe... That would give you more money. But the original Japanese publisher would be tweaked because your game got you a few bucks but shafted his company out of selling a unit. Different countries have different publishers- just like with books or movies.

Sorting through 5 disks worth of packages is not my idea of fun... By all means though, you go ahead and have fun with it. Tell me if that isn't bloated. In fact... Even the freebie Red Hat disks that come with magazines are loaded with too much crap. To play fair I will admit that a distro is a matter of preference. I think that is one of the greatest advantages to having so many dirtibutions. I know a physics instructor who swears by Red Hat, and that is what he teaches in his Linux classes. That is fine by me. It certainly doesn't make him any less of a Linux enthusiast by using it.

That's exactly why I don't use Windows at home anymore. I have to have it at work for some database stuff, but even then- I have my work machine set as a dual boot running Slackware. On top of that, I use Opera 5 on both operating systems. I can handle the banner ads in order to have a fast/lean web browser. As soon as the Linux version gets all of the normal features, I will actually pay the get rid of the ads and support the company. Windows users don't realize that they pay for IE when they pay for Windows. Do you want to pay for faulty software? I don't hate Microsoft, nor do I hate Windows. I just don't care to use thier products because of reasons like this. I got sick of the machine trying to configure hardware by itself and doing it incorrectly of all things! I also got sick of the frequent puking occasions that my machine fell victim to under regular use. I NEVER experience crashes with Slackware 7.1 , weather it be the OS itself or even XF86. The only time I experience a program crash is if the program is poorly written. Loosing the ability to play new, Direct X based games is only a small price to pay to have the functionality that I want. It's all up to all of you. I really could care less what OS you use, though I am quite surprised at the number of MSIE and Outlook users that frequent Slashdot.

Actually... It isn't unique. Lots of old 3d Accelerators like "Obsidian?" Voodoo 2 had more than one chip. The only the difference is that they were accelerators, graphics processors on the V2 cards. The new Voodoo 5 I believe has multiple GPUs. The name "Graphics Synthesizer" is just a silly buzzword that they use to draw people's attention to the hardware, which I believe is highly over-rated. Gamecube has a chip that was designed by ArtX. They were purchased by ATi or 3DFX. I cant remember exactly. I believe it was 3DFX. ArtX also made the 3D accelerator on the N64.

You can buy them from China at a price of $180 US. This does not include shipping. They say that these are for SAMPLE USE ONLY and are not to be used as retail DVD players. It may be that these do not have the regional lock-out, and VDDV is trying to cash in on the demand for this player. I might look into getting one. Anyone know if this is the revised model, or the one with the "Secret Loophole" menu. Check out www.vddv.com and select "Buy Sample." Also check out thier other stuff. Some of thier products look kinda interesting. I am curious as to who dist. some of them in the US. 13Echo
