Most movies that are on dvd do exist in some form of tape, but I rarely see the extra content that is available on a dvd in tape form.
Example: Just this weekend I watched the new Bukaroo Banzai dvd with some buddies of mine. We watched the movie and just about every special feature except the commentary tracks. I will pretty much bet the farm that you wont be able to find all of that content unless it is from a dvd.
Granted there are a ton of movies that will probably never see the light of dvd, but I believe that vhs's market share is slipping fast. Most video stores/rentals in my area are at least half dvd now.
I for one can't wait to see tapes gone and dvd recorders come into power. I really don't mind having to fead it an analog (not drm) signal either because 99% of what I record is from the tv.
Ballmer has even stated that this is what they wanted to do. They originally planned to do an all in wonder set top box but no one really wanted to develop games for it. Then Ballmer came back and said something to the effect of "what if we made the best damn video console ever?"
I don't see how this can be surprising to the/. crowd. Whenever a product comes out there is always work being done on the next one. Operating systems are a perfect example of this.
I have seen a lot of people rag on the specialized pieces that lego has come out with. I don't agree so much.
I grew up with my older brothers having tons of the yellow basic bricks for the REALLY early castle series. As I got older I got a lot of newer castle and pirate legos as they came out. I loved having pieces that were specialized. Finally I had pieces that were good curves and some other pieces that allowed me to build stuff that wouldn't be nearly as solid without them.
Basically my legos fell into two catagories as I got them. Cool models (mainly technic) and sets that would live as their own until I incorporated them into my other sets.
Eventually all my sets would pretty much end up in my boxes orgaized by color or what their main use was.
And a special message to all lego freaks: My secret all black piece strike force will destroy you all! These guys are tough, if they can't survive the throw down the stairs then they don't make it.

What are you talking about? I have actually used a X-box controler (final rev) for an extened period of time and it wasn't heavy at all. I actually REALLY like that controler.
To me it felt about as heavy as a dreamcast controller. It isn't too small (psx) and it isn't too big either. The buttons feel great and I like the spring back/resistance on the control sticks.
I think it will be a better controler then the game cube too.
"Most sports seem to be heading this way as it is (long ball hitters w/shit teams, kick ass players that carry the whole team)"
I guess you haven't heard of the Seattle Mariners. They are only the best team in baseball right now and not by a little bit. If you haven't had a chance to watch them play they rarely win by the long ball. Lots of singles, advancing the runner and stuff like that.
The team is just solid as a whole, not fully based on the strength of one or two players. Sorry I just get a little excited about the M's.
First of all let me start out that I hate the sneaky bundling of other products into what I really wanted. To me opt-out is Bull Sh*t. It seems untrustworthy for an application to secretly install itself. Most of the time these are the programs that are the hardest to get rid of once you realize that they have taken control.
What about the people that want to have those extra links. I actually like the idea of quick/smart links, but I would rather have them setup in a manner where they aren't there visually. I want it as a right click option. To me I think it should be more like a search or definition in a new window.
Basically it would go down like this: select some text and then choose for some more info on this topic.
I can easily see how this could be problematic as well. People are always going to be buying up those "more info" type information. That is why I would like it hooked into encarta or some impartial information. That way if I want more info on the x-box it would tell me what it is and give me a few pics. From there it would be up to me to find more info.
Damn that was a rambling peace of poo. All I care about is: dont mess with other peoples work/sites, give me the option to still get that more info WHEN I WANT IT not when you want me to have it, and no paid links for more info.
At the college radio station that I worked at they used mp3's for a ton of stuff. They had a few really nice machines in the booth or in production rooms.
1. New popular songs/stolen cd's. College radio doesn't always get exactly what they want when they want it. Also it is an easy way to temporarily replace a cd until the replacement is available.
2. Remixes of songs. You can't call yourself the freshest station in Central Washington if you don't have that cool unreleased dub remix.
3. Advertisements, background music/sounds, and station id's. It is a easier to use then minidisc and there is less equipment to break.
4. Over night dj. During the summers there aren't enough people to man the booth the whole time so they turn on "robo dj." When setup right it never repeats a song and plays all the ad's and id's in the right places.
From what I have been seeing here it seems like linux users want it both ways. If MS doesn't support old software then they are the bad guy, but if they try to keep some level of functionality for existing products then they get nailed for not inovating.
Not everyone has the luxury to recompile and confgure their machine to the latest distro of some utility. True linux type OS's can be amazingly stable. I honestly feel that they make better webservers then 2000 machines do right now. For me the problem is that they require too much "upkeep" to work the way that I want them too. They are great if you have the time to commit to them but I would rather do other things like go outside, talk to members of the opposite sex, or maybe both at once.
I see people using windows OS's because they know what to expect. There are so much less hoops to jump through to get something up and running. If I want to run my old Math Blaster program from the third grade I can.
Basically I would sacrifice other benifits for the ablity to run much more legacy software.
I am hoping that some of the other countries that do have licensing do broadcast events on the internet. I for one am way tired of seeing the same people in the same events. Even if they put up the "weird" events I will be happy. I would like to see some fencing, or karate or anything that I haven't seen in years past. Those people are the real Olympians to me now. These are the people that aren't just riding a huge McDonalds/Home Depot sponsorship and still manage to get to the games. I don't care what language the commentary is in, just show me something different!
Normally I try to watch whatever Canadian channel has rights because their coverage is much better. You don't get too much of the "weird" events but you do see people from other countries winning even when they are competing against Canadians.
I remember every opening ceremonies getting down right pissed at the NBC coverage. You could hear other countries being announced and coming in but they would cut to some American athlete who looks pretty bored to be there while in the background you can see athletes from other countries jumping up and down, crying, and totally being stoked how happy they are to be there.
Maybe I will have to join some hacking crew so I can get some good feeds from the games.
With reguards to the corporate savings, why not go the route of virtual private network? That way the user has to provide his own inet connection and then just log onto the corp network from there.

I can totally see myself in a smoke filled room and running towards the chssh-chssh of freedom only to run into a broken steam vent.
How many people have to die from horrible steam burns before we stop this madness? HOW MANY!

It's probably a wash either way.
