To make money, you might want to make your game engine open source, but sell your expertise as an a consultant making particular games for clients. For example, the Military is getting more interested in using modern game systems for training and weapons development. Corporations may also be interested in training simulations, or in games for promotional purposes.
As a MS SQLI think the real problem here is not with the MS SQL Server software (the "sa" password problem is also shared with Oracle), but with the management. They often have the MS Windows Admin / Help Desk people also manage the SQL Server database. The Windows Admins usually do not have the time or expertise to adequetely manage the complex DBMS servers. They really need "specialist" DBA's who are familiar with both general DBMS issues and with MS SQL Server in particular.
The fact that Microsoft is repackaging it as more of a "standalone" product. As a Contractor for the Federal Gov't., we run into many places where the Gov't needs to keep "customer" data, whether the customers are citizens or government employees. The fact Microsoft will let the Gov't. (or one of Contractors!) buy, install, and run the software will make it a LOT more useful!
IBM will implement the security software for their Linux systems, if required. They will even cooperate with other Linux vendors to produce a "GPL" product.
The people in Appalachia and other rural areas do not see any shortage of Broad-Band.
As a suggestion, we should lobby our congress-critters to put some $ into expanding Broad-Band to rural areas, as well as generally expand IT in the Public Sector. Besides helping underserved areas, it makes sense as a Fiscal measure to stimulate our anemic economy!

You will see that the US Military IS taking an interest in Nanotechnology.

Apple should have called it either:
1. Our way of shooting ourselves in the foot when we were ahead.
2. Our way of ensuring that Bill Gates will be the richest person ever!
jfern,
If you're willing to move, you can find plenty of work. If not, may I suggest you:
1. Become a "Head-Hunter" specializing in people who are willing to move.
2. Setup a Software "backoffice" for companies in the NYC area that need "cheap tech labor".
Yes, it can happen. About 13 Years Ago, I interviewed with an IT group at a large Auto Company. I was flown to Detroit from Texas, talked with several team leads, given "pretty good" treatment and every indication that they wanted me. I was close to accepting a reasonable offer from them.
My last interview was with the Department Head, the Exec who made the decision. He told me that, if it was his choice, I would be given an offer "on the spot". Unfortunately, the Corporation instituted a hiring freeze the day of my interview. He could not hire me! It was frustrating for BOTH of us!
Current dialup users will see these restrictions / hassles and decide "why bother".
It seems that these sorts of restrictions could have the effect of killing broadband growth. What do others think?

I believe Singapore is also taking this approach.

It may not matter, as the shooters are under the gun from the US Congress.
