  1. What's on NVIDIA's site!! on NVidia and Linux Troubles · · Score: 1

I was worried at first, but www.nvidia.com has this to say:

The 3D support is for development on XFree86 3.3.5 only, and IS NOT a high performance architecture. The upcoming XFree86 X server 4.0 will use the Direct Rendering Infrastructure required to take full advantage of the RIVA processors. For more information look at: http://www.precisioninsight.com. Suse also has done work toward a high performance interface. Look at: http://www.suse.de/~sim

So at least the horses mouth is talking the talk.

  2. Re:O'Reilly puts his money where his mouth is. on Publisher Speaks Out Against Amazon Patents · · Score: 1

That's silly! Do you think he makes less of a profit if someone orders the Camel book form FatBrain? Does he get a deal from Amazon?

I think not. Affilate or not, it's all just selling product.

I used to work at Waldenbooks and at first I was in a dream... the "I love this book! I want everyone to buy it!" But that passed. It turned into, "This book is $9.95, but you can get 10% if you buy this $10 perfered reader card which will help my PR/transaction ratio which is the only thing this company cares about when dealing with me? So do you want this card or not?"

It's the same thing, really. Buy your shit from us and we'll make it worth your while. Ease of use it what's it about. I mean, I work Tech Support (for several national ISPs) and people compain when IE doesn't dial for them anymore. Clicking on the shortcut, then connect, then IE is just TOO DAMN HARD for these people.

  3. Who owns what? on AOL Nation · · Score: 1

How does one go about finding what "Time-Warner" means? I mean a list of companies that they own.

    So far I've seen:
    Columbia House Records
    The Atlanta Braves
    TIME
    W-B
    HBO (and Viacom?)

...and many many others. But where can I find a list? Is someone keeping track?

Of course, this year will be easy as I'm out of school and moving to Sillycon Valley for a RealJob (tm)

Doesn't it make you feel good to search something like dice.com for the work "Linux" and find over 2000 hits? I know I get all warm and fuzzy inside.

  5. What are we saying about humanity? on Maybe Video Games Don't Make Kids Kill · · Score: 1

What kind of person says that their kids are so detached from reality that they can't tell the difference between a computer screen that has angels with ripped off wings and the rea 9mm in their hands in the school yard?

What I'm trying to say is there are other problems going on with some kid says that playing a game made him want to kill people. In gact, has any _kids_ said that or is the adults who don't want to blame the fact that they let the TV and the computer grow their kids up?

I've gone out with my share of single mothers to know that if you don't parent your children, they'll find a way to let you know.

  6. _THIS_ is valid protest? on The Message from Seattle · · Score: 1

Sheesh. I can't believe this! I don't like the way that most of the worlds governments are working, so lets all go out and distroy some Mickey'D's and Starbucks. What's wrong with this picture??

When I was homeless and traveling for two years, I saw many a bum beg for change (the money type). I've always felt that this was dumb. Just like me, all of these kids could get a job doing anything from Internet Tech Support to digging ditches for Grandma Wilson if they wanted to. But that was just it. They didn't want to. They didn't want to put any real, constructive effort into the system. So instead they begged for it and got enough for a 40oz. That malt is just enough to give me, a non-begging, non-drunk "kind hippie brother" a bad name.

This is just the kind of thing that they are doing in WA. They don't feel like it's worth it to try to change things from the inside, so they are just begging and destroying. This gives everyone with a social conscience a bad name
I mean, do they think they are going to win against riot gear and tear gas? Are they going to look good in the eyes of the people that can change these sorts of things?

The worst thing for me personally is that after I chose to stop being homeless and settled down to go to school (Humboldt State Univ, the "hippie" school full of pot-and-nothing-else heads), the school chose to send 45 kids to Seattle at a cost of 1/6 of the total student budget. That's just about 10,000!!! So they could turn over a cop car and bring home some rubber bullets!!!

If this counts as social conscience, then posting a reply on Slashdot counts as a "published article"

  10. Hello, Tech Support! on Is Qwest's ISP Deal Really Worth the Hassle? · · Score: 1

I work for a large-ish tech support company (we do about 40 ISP's) and we would never support Linux. I mean, I have been using Linux for 5 years now and it's hard enough to troubleshoot my brother's system if his DSL isn't working.

I hate to say it, but Linux is still at the point that if you have a non-standard setup (roll your own, i mean) and you can't read the HOWTO's to get your PPP working, you're SOL.

I did take a call where some kid wanted to get his connection working in Linux. Took me 5 minutes to find out that he didn't install any of the PNP tools or networking _anything_ on his system (which was Redhat 4.2!) Ironicly, I told him what I tell a lot of Windoze people... upgrade and/or reinstall.

I don't work for a large company that can foot my bill. But I could come up with $100, maybe, to get in and eat. I'll sleep in my VW.

But to go with my free Redhat shirt, I want a $20 copy of 6.0 for SPARC. I want to be able to buy cool stuff for cheaper than I can on the net. Wouldn't that be great?

Also, I would love to have a sermon about why Linux is good for your business. I want to be able to take my boss and have him hear it from someone with a big name that even the only semi-techie would know.
