  1. Programming - dead end? Hell no! on Is Programming a Dead End Job? · · Score: 0

I totally agree that as long as you love what you are doing, you'll keep doing it. I find myself in a very privileged position - I get payed for doing what I would do anyway - programming. I love waking up and go to work and do what I have done since my teens.

Another reason, that I think may be even bigger, is that DirectX from version 7 and especially version 8 has improved dramatically in several points - has standardized support for the newest features in new gfx cards. In addition the API has been cleaned up and made significantly simpler and less errorprone to use.

Still OpenGL still has a nicer API, IMO, but Direct3D has seriously closed in and it works like a dream on almost any PC config. with any version of Windows.

Well the Record Giants can go fuck themselves for all i care. In the end they're only making it worse for themselves. They're already prettiii unpopular as it is, and more and more artists making non-main stream music are seeking smaller labels. So what happens if people stop pirating pop-music? Well, it means that there is less junk laying around on e.g. gnutella networks, so who cares?
And when Record Giants want's to control the music services - yeah well - the main-stream listening people can go out and bend over for the Record Giants and keep them happy, the rest of us will just enjoy our favorite music anyways - as always, and perhaps use another service instead.

Totally agree. I'm going for a dual Athlon system, when I start at my new job. The point-to-point bus in AMD's 760MP sounds interesting. One thing i didn't understand in the article though was the statement that a point-to-point bus doesn't keep the CPU's from competing over bandwidth. What's the point with a P2P bus then?

I completely sympathize with you and understand your views. I felt kinda the same way 4 years ago when I still used an Atari Falcon030. But then I got a job involving Windows software development, and had to buy a PC and learn the Win32 API etc.etc.
You're lucky to have a job where you work with your favorite system, and I can only wish you all the luck. It's all a matter of doing was is fun. After all our jobs is what takes up most of our time in life, so it might as well be fun.
I loved my Atari, but I guess in the end it suffered a greater blow than the Amiga.
Anyway, I wish all you Amiga developers all the best of luck in the world. There can _never_ be too many alternatives outthere - it is the diversity and ambidexterity of the computer world that spawns new ideas or new ways of looking at the same problem.
I am actually quite shocked to hear Linux-users, Mac-users etc. be so harsh towards e.g. the Amiga, afterall Linux and Mac are partly based on the same views - that the world needs alternatives! So stop biggering and embrace all the couragious people that still have the guts to pull stunts like this!

  12. Re:Stop playing with IT! on Playing With IT, And Why It Matters · · Score: 1

    I totally utterly agree!
It is the same situation at the university where I am. I'm currently writing my master thesis in cs, and a lot of the students, especially the 1st and 2nd semester students have a lot of retakes and low grades in general. And from the gossip I often hear, a lot of the younger students have been motivated by the "IT pays well"-thing, and generally have no clue about computers and even matematics.
Surely, this must be the recent high demand for IT people, that has spawned this. Now computer science is chosen both by traditional geeks as well as non-geeks. And my experience is that most non-geeks fail miserably, though there are exceptions that actually manages to learn it quite well.
The non-geeks often also have problems finding the real good jobs (especially now), whereas the "real" geek have no problems at all, even now. Actually companies here in Denmark are still raving for the talented people.
Anyway, my point - the less talented people that have a sort of non-enthusiastic approach to IT will have a hard time. But is that really so strange? Don't think so.
Oh and this "lazy"-thing that some pointy-haired bosses can exibit towards us night-loving geeks - Been there and tried that :-)

I don't agree. C++ is a much cleaner language than C. Yes, it is bigger (Templates and OO), but it's not a monstrosity. Personally OO is indeed a good thing (and templates if you use them in a clever manner), especially when projects get big. Of course the programmers would need to have an understanding of OO concepts or else the code will just be mishmash of C and some weird use of C++ constructs all mixed like a plate of spaghetti.

There is no doubt. The circumstances around the P4 is way too unflexible and perhaps still too expensive. All the good reasons for bying an Intel-based PC there existed in the past, are slowly diminishing (in my opinion).
As far as I see it the P-III was the last good breed from Intel. Now AMD has catched up and are even (perhaps) ahead of Intel. Not just in speed terms, but also in terms of choices and price. And as far I am informed (correct me if I'm wrong), the P4 isn't designed for multi-processing. In contrast AMD are now beginning to think in multi-processing terms. They are even working on new bus-architectures to support just that.
    So my questions are:
    - Why would I wan't to buy a P4?
    - Why should I not buy an Athlon based machine or some other new AMD based machine?
