    I couldn't agree more.

I've always thought that for Linux to be successful
in the consumer market, they need to make the concept of 'su-ing to root' easier.

What I thought would be a good answer to this is to somehow tie a key on the front of the PC (could be the familiar BIOS-key) to administrative mode.
"You are about to install kword, please turn key
    to administrative mode".

In a way, redhat and other vendors have made good
progress in this area. You can run up2date as a joe user and it just asks for the password. Some of the package management tools in KDE do this too I believe ?

There should be nothing wrong with selling your copy of Word if you plan on buying a new copy or stop using Word.

I know the P2P term is not terrible accurate. I mean it's still client/server, nothing new indeed.

What is new IMHO is 'who' is using the technology.
The term P2P IMO reflects not what technology is used but who is using it: DNS-deprived, fixed-IP deprived and/or transient connected folks.

Perhaps it should be P2P as in: 'Person 2 person'

University A: "you know, this isn't meeting our goals anymore, it's no longer about sharing information"

University B: "yeah, I agree. Let's start a fresh link together, maybe others feel the same way and will join in. "

I agree with the concept that computers are tools and people need to learn how to use them.

I've been down the Vic20, C64, DOS road. My first Vic20 command was: whatis basic. I tried a couple of those and decided that I should probably crack the spine (or spiral) on the book. (Ooohhh, I said).

The problem as I see it is current computers systems should not be marketed as user friendly. I'm not trying to start a flame or a troll but I don't believe that NT or Linux or Solaris can honestly be called user friendly. When you tell people: "It's user friendly", you're saying: "You don't need to read".

I think computers *should* advance to the state where we can all have fun with them at all levels. ie. (Picard: Computer... Tea.. Earl Grey... Hot) and (Geordi: What the fsck is wrong with this replicator).

IMHO, we're only half way there and for the here and now, people who want to use computers need to start with: "What is a file, what is an *.exe, etc. )

Hope this post wasn't too lame.

I've been in this situation recently. I'd never interviewed b4 and felt pressure to hire the right person.

    Some things we do:

Let HR/Management do the initial screening for personality and other HR issues. Schedule another interview for the prospect to meet the techies.

During the second interview. Allow him/her plenty of time to do their own talking. Show them some aspects of your environment. Give them the opportunity to see what kinds of things you do. (There may be security issues for some sites)

We feel this gives both parties to explore each others expertise/knowledge. We ask two or three spot questions relevant to our environment but at times we feel we don't have to based on how the casual conversation went.

This will also allow you to see how well the prospect will fit within the team personality wise.

Not all of this may apply to your situation, but I hope it's somewhat useful.
