The only thing I've not been keen on about the Supermicro IPMI is that it's way more quirky and unpolished compared to iLO2/3 (I've only used the 300 series servers). I also have issues with the former locking up and failing to respond to IPMI commands after a while which requires logging in to the web interface and clicking the reset button. Of course, the price point is impossible to beat with Supermicro, and the expensive HP iLO advanced licensing is usually a deal killer.

Even though I have a system built on Asterisk and HylaFAX for sending faxes, it's almost always easier to just drop paper into the fax machine, dial the number, and press start. I don't even really have to wait since the machine just scans into memory right away. Come back later and there's a printed confirmation report waiting. For things that need a signature this is almost always easier than scanning it in to a PDF and then whoops, the recipient's corporate email filter stripped the attachment, several phone calls or emails of "did you get it yet", and ultimately I have to go fax the thing anyway. So I just skip all that BS to save time because the traditional fax always works.

My incoming faxes are always translated into a PDF which is then emailed, though, so that half works out fine for me. The standalone fax acts as a backup.

Huh? My A/C system uses a 40 amp 240 volt dedicated circuit. They are showing these cars as having a 15 amp 120 volt plug. How much do these cars really need during recharge?

More than that if you want to charge it faster than overnight. Once you get into the fine print the recommended way is a 240V charging station. The Volt, for example, takes 10-12 hours to charge on a 120V 15A outlet. But it will charge in 3-4 hours with 240V. This 240V charging station wants a 40A circuit. Same as your A/C system.

As a Canadian, the only deal available to me is $7.99 for streaming only. I looked over the catalog and decided there was enough there to be worth $7.99/month.

So what's not worth $7.99 to Americans, the DVDs or the streaming? Given that your streaming library is more extensive, I assume it's the DVDs. Cancel that and enjoy the streaming.

I plan to stream a few episodes of a series I'm watching over 3G from my hospital bed later today.

Streaming. Their streaming library - while better than it used to be - is still nowhere near comparable to their DVD library. Most of what I want to see is only available on DVD. If I could stream it I would, but they only have it in DVD.

A cost per unit of data moved can be made up, however. Say you choose to spend half a million on some new name-brand switching equipment that's only ever going to have cheap-ass end users on it, which also means you know you'll never recoup the cost under normal circumstances. Most of the popular SP equipment is far more expensive than your average unmanaged gigabit switch from Best Buy. Go price a new Cisco 7600 or Juniper MX and you'll see. So you come up with some caps or arbitrary limits to cause extra charges on a predictable percentage of those cheap users. I'm sure there's also "well, everyone else has caps now, might as well do it too because we can get away with it for free money."

End users are also woeful retarded when it comes to choosing internet access. If you place two providers in front of them: one from the big-name telco/cable at $X and one from an independent ISP/WISP at $X + $5, the vast majority will choose the one that's 5 dollars cheaper based on that factor alone even if the independent ISP doesn't have caps and can provide better value (higher speeds, no caps, etc.) They don't care to look beyond price and possibly the big name. It's even worse when you consider the "bundling" that's popular today so they might as well add the internet option to the TV package for a couple bucks more even if it is total crap.

I don't really see caps going away anytime soon. Once the money starts to flow they aren't going to want to give it up unless someone else comes in (say the return of an independent third-party with layer 2 services from Google's fiber project) and forces the big guys to try and compete again rather than existing in a bubble where it didn't matter what they did.
