Of course the market share is horribly screwed when you consider how many companies release cookie cutter versions of whatever is currently popular in an effort to make a quick buck. How many games did Id release? How many clones of those games were released? MMORG's are the hot thing right now, and the market will be saturated shortly with Asherons Call 2, Asherons Call, Everquest, Everquest 2(or whatever it's called), Star Wars Galaxies, Horizons, Neocron, Anarchy Online, etc, etc, etc. MMORGs are popular, let's see if we can make a quick buck that way. It's the same process that took place when Doom hit the shelves, and even more so when Quake2 hit the shelves.

My only concern about giving the jury the full text of the law is that there is a lot of text and they may or may not understand it all. Burying the jury in 100 pages of legalise can destract them from the task at hand. On the other hand, the lawyers involved in the trial focus on what they feel is important. What they feel important and what is important to applying the law fairly can be two differant things. Especially if your goal is setting precedent for future trials.

Interestingly enough I find many of my friends (18-30) still play games. GTA3, State of Emergency, Hitman, etc. are all really violent and have adult themes. They are also only as entertaining as your attention span is long. On the other hand most of my friends pick up the Nintendo titles for thier replay value, unique themes, and solid track record. Pikman was fun, differant, and entertaining time and time again. The Zelda series have been some of the best games I've played and I look forward to the Gamecube release. Many of my friends feel the same.

So while the gamers have gotten older, the desire to game hasn't necessarily changed. Many gamers look for solid games with more than just adult themes. If I want to play an adult themed game I can pick up any of a thousand variations. If I want to play a challenging, unique game that is going to keep me interested I don't have much to choose from. I feel Nintendo fills this niche even more than the family oriented nature of the games.

I didn't say it was the right thing to do. Nor did I say I liked it. Personally I think what Neocron is doing is better. Some servers are one character only, others allow you have 5 characters. This way if you want to play around with your friends and figure things out you can have 5 characters that all your friends know of etc. Then for some serious gamers with the hopefully serious players and not just the power levelers and ebay sellers you can play on the one character server.

Also, if you are playing with a group of friends and you change characters a bunch that's a choice you make. You have to figure out how to let them know your new characters name. That's what email etc are for. Of course if you get left behind in level etc, that's another issue. I think that at least initially many people will be deleting characters. Or playing many types of characters on many servers till they find what they like and then creating that type of character on the server that they will be playing on the most. At least that makes the most sense to me. I've never been particularly fond of the rerolling characters because your character is gimped or the play style for your character stinks. This is what Asherons Call was like. Every couple of months it was time for a reroll because your currently powerfull character couldn't compete any more due to the changes in dynamics imposed with the monthly update. Then if one character type became too powerfull they were super nerfed.

  8. Re:I bet this policy will change.. on Star Wars Galaxies Only to Allow One Character Per Account · · Score: 5, Informative

No, I have no idea how many character branch possibilities there are. I'm saying any one individual can try 10 character branch possibilities at any one time. However each character resides on a differant server. With most MMORGS you can have multiple characters on one server. This allows players to swap items between thier characters etc. Many people feel this puts other players at a disadvantage. So some games are starting to limit the number of characters a player can have on a particular server.

Of course you can get by this by simply purchasing an additional copy of the game and paying the monthly fees for two accounts.

  9. Re:I bet this policy will change.. on Star Wars Galaxies Only to Allow One Character Per Account · · Score: 5, Insightful

You can have more than one character. In fact you can have 10 I believe. However, you can only have one character per server. It's to prevent twinking etc.

So, you can try any branch you want, try and character type you want, you just have to try them on differant servers.

Ok, we are getting down to the political issues as to why items like this are on the back burner. I'm saying that they shouldn't be and trying to give a reason why. The fact that they are because there isn't enough man power etc is a result of poorly funded police departments and mismanagment of the funds they do have, IMO. If you have the staff to handle all of your crimes (or at least the majority of big and small not just the big) you have a good chance in seeing an overall reduction in crime due to the increased risk. Part of what makes crime appealing, especially small scale crimes, is the low chance of getting caught or prosecuted. If people get busted for the small crimes the feeling that it's not worth it to try a bigger crime may prevail.

Ignoring the small crimes doesn't make crime go away. Yes there are more heinous crimes than fraud, but crime is crime period.

Honestly I would like to see my police department with sufficient funding and manpower. I would also like to see that funding and man power being put to use solving as many crimes as possible big and small.

  14. Re:Awfully dangerous on MacAddict Tracks Down eBay Scam Artist · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is flawed logic. By going after the big criminal you look good and stop one or two big thefts. If you let the small time fraud cases go you can ultimatly be letting a larger amount be stolen. The fact that it's taken in smaller amounts doesn't make it any less of a crime. In fact if you read the article you would see that the individual committing the fraud in this case was committing $10,000 in fraud that day. How many other times had he done this? Probably quite a bit. Is it worth it to go after one $100,000 fraud case and not 5 $3,000-$6,000 dollar fraud cases that may ultimatly add up to >$100,000? If small time criminals find out that as long as they keep the dollar amount down they won't be investigated by the police, they are basically provided incentive to continue committing the crimes in those small amounts. Over time it can add up to a lot of money. They are also likely to tell other people about it and the trend can increase.

Now if the guy walked up to your car and signed it in gold pen that might be kinda cool, but I don't understand buying a reprint of someones signature. I thought the whole point of getting a signature/autograph was because you got the persons actual signature. Hence you took the time and effort to go somewhere that the person was and actually asked for a signature.

Then at a later date when you happen to be at a coffee shop in London and Madonna forgets her purse again you can get her to autograph her iPod when she asks to borrow two pounds for that cake she is buying for her kid.

Once again, this is an example of politicians going after the wrong things. Of course nothing will change as a result of the banning of these items, so they will just have to take away other items. Which in turn will probably do just as little and hence more and more will be taken away.

At least that's the way I see this, I could be wrong. The crime rate could disappear overnight and the large drug trade could disappear along with the violence and crime. And pigs might fly out of my butt.

    mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

or something similar to that ( -t for filesystem type depending on how you had it formatted ) should have worked fine for mounting an msdos floppy. Also, you could have tried apt-get installing the drivers for your geforce 4 as they are available through http sources as well as ftp.

    apt-get install nvidia-glx-src nvidia-kernel-src

It seems many of your problems would have been resolved by looking for a tad bit of help/documentation.

man 8 mount or simply man mount would have told you the necessary commands to mount your windows formatted floppy.

Some KVM's don't work that well, I've run into the particular problem you are referring to on windows and linux boxes.

I understand you've never installed Debian before, but you have obviously seen how many people rant and rave about it. Typically the one thing everyone loves is apt. So, I would think it's logical to try and use apt to install the things you were looking for. You did a network install so your network worked and I think it's fair to assume that apt could have saved you some trouble. Of course one of the down sides to using Debian is that it isn't as well documented as some of the other packaged distros you can buy. Maybe you should try RedHat 8 instead as you can install apt for it and get the nice box with install instructions etc. http://apt.freshrpms.net/ for apt for redhat.
