  1. Have a look at Filehippo.com update checker first on A Windows-Based Packaging Mechanism · · Score: 0, Offtopic
I'd recommend having a look at filehippo.com. They have a tool in a similar vein, although not restricted to opensource - the File Hippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) - it works pretty well. My only criticism for them is that they identify new video driver packages which don't necessarily apply to your specific hardware, just the vendor.

On a complete tangent - what software submission sites/distribution channels can people recommend (like fileforum/download.com etc) for getting your own freeware/shareware listed? I've got a guitar tutor thingy at http://www.webprofusion.com/scalex that I want to finally get rolling out, it's been sitting around for ages and I've another update in the works.

  2. Re:Developers are forking code to use java and c#! on View the Moon in 3D on Your Desktop · · Score: 1

I agree that porting stuff Mono doesn't have already would take time and effort, however that would likely take a few months to do (perhaps even several). On the other hand a java port that has to live alongside the C# version will be required to be maintained for the lifetime of WorldWind and will always need to be kept in sync with the C# version. Obviously if they make a wholesale move to Java then they need only work about the java version. I would argue that sounds a much bigger task than just getting the existing Worldwind to work using modifications to current tools.

  3. Developers are forking code to use java and c#! on View the Moon in 3D on Your Desktop · · Score: 5, Insightful

According to the developer they are planning to create a Java version for linux as well as the C#/DirectX version they have now:
    http://mail.worldwindcentral.com/pipermail/worldwi nd-dev/2005-September/000736.html

This is nuts! Trying to make one big complicated from work is hard enough, making two versions of it written in different languages is inexplicable! The only real reason hinted at is that Microsoft wouldn't like NASA using Mono for an official application. Does Microsoft really want NASA to use Java just to spite Mono?

Download the code for WorldWind and have a look, then consider porting it to Java/OpenGL/Java3D. Then consider just using Mono with OpenGL bindings. Or consider funding Wine so it supports .Net based apps (maybe not that far off? Wine DirectX already works for many modern games).

Somebody talk some sense into them. Or tell me why I'm wrong, either way someone has to sort this out otherwise it's going to be a massive waste of time and money.

I'm ranting, I know - can anyone else see how backward this is?

I registered for a credit card from Natwest in the UK - weeks went by and I heard nothing, then one day I gets a phone call asking me to confirm the details I'd filled in on the form: name, dob, password (sound fishy yet?) - I got suspicious but the person on the other end confirmed that I'd ordered a card for my wife too so I thought only the bank would know all this and continued, laughing at my own overly-suspicious nature! Oops. a week after that the (real) natwest credit card fraud dept phoned me up to confirm my latest purchases (on a credit card I'd never even see, no matter signed for or sign the back of). Needless to say I was a bit annoyed - the thieves had stolen my credit cards on delivery (i.e. they probably worked FOR the post office) and then used all manner of other method to find out more about me so they could do more with my credit cards and related documentation. so watch out folks, their's bad 'uns about!

  15. Portability, Logical Design & Portability on Does J2EE Live Up To Its Promise? · · Score: 1

Well, we used JSP & our own class library to build a generic file-sharing extranet system (called Cointelligence - http://www.webprofusion.com/cointelligence), I have to say that I find the best thing (apart from being able to seperate your db/logic code from the presentation) is that you have a wealth of app servers to choose from (resin from www.caucho.com being a good example) and the portability is excellent ('port' from NT to Unix in the time it takes to tranfer the files across).

At the end of the day your only going to use the 'Enterprise' stuff if your running multiple application servers, which some people do and the choice of application server is important there. ASP is still the easiest way to write a dynamic solution (java is a little wordy..) but then basic is the easiest way to write a program etc..

  19. JSP/Servlets as an alternative to ASP on Migrating From MS/IIS to Linux/Apache? · · Score: 1

    Hi,
We've recently ported a 10,000 user intranet system from ASP to Servlets. At the same time we've also been doing some JSP stuff and at the end of the day the simplest and most direct conversion would be to JSP for your page templates & Java classes for your application logic. There are many other alternatives including using a Java port of ASP in the form of the Chillisoft asp or similar. Ideally if you go for JSP/Servlets/Java in general (check out the Resin JSP/servlet engine at www.caucho.com) then you have platform independence - you can host on anything from there on.

I'd recommend the JSP route for it's similarities to ASP and the fact your not relying on any one vendor (even Sun) for any of your components. You might also find that MySQL can do a lot of the MS SQL server stuff as long as your not using Triggers/Views/Stored Procedures etc..

evil pete: See my reply to the comment about me 'failing to understand'. Basically I think prices are over-inflated by record companies and they must facilitate the cheap distribution of mp3 or they're income will suffer. if they provide cheap (download only) versions of albums via a fast, reliable server then what need is there for napster? This solution does not affect the artist as they can still make the same amount of money. it may however affect the record company - who would in turn cut the artists share of the profits.
The moral of the story is that record companies will have to start taking a smaller cut or lose out completely.

I'm not saying metallica shouldn't get paid. but they only get $1 for a $15 CD. I've bought all of the metallica albums with hard cash (about £150 ($150) worth - funny how the exchange rate doesn't apply when it comes to CD's.. ). If I could buy and download a metallica album in mp3 format for less than $5 (which is surely enough - no distribution,no packaging,no local advertising) then I would. so how about it record companies?
    Thought not.

Lars had a much publicised love of New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Bands (NWOBHM) and no doubt listened to and exchanged lots of bootleg tapes.
