With the current American Economy, noone will develop anything without a monetary incentive.
Without such an economy, you would not have your nice personal computer, nor would you be able to post your opinion on an extremely popular site like slashdot.
Those little logos don't bother me on things like live sports, but they are totally distracting when watching a movie or good drama. Especially those that show up really bright when the full frame is dark.
But the most annoying trend on television is the MSNBC-style banners. I noticed this especially during the September 11 coverage. I swear, the huge banner on the bottom of the screen took up almost 1/3 of the height of the screen, and had basically NO information on it. WTF is up with that? These people need to get some designers in there that know how to put the most information in the least amount of space.
I don't need a huge banner to tell me the name of someone who's face I can't see because it's half covered up by said banner!
That's strange... I go to places like Best Buy, Circuit City, buy.com, amazon.com, etc., and damned if I can find ANY webpad, let alone a well-designed webpad.
Am I the only person here who things not everything needs to be 'networked' or 'smart' or 'e-' or '-net' or anything else? For god's sake, leave some things simple!
Why is it when an advance is made in some unconventional area, there are always those people that assume EVERYTHING in that area is going to change, and they will be forced to change along with it?
Just because there are 'smart clothes' doesn't mean you have to fucking buy them!
Now they are not allowed to deliver a dual-boot system, their contracts specifically forbids them to install anything but MS Operating Systems.
Actually it's even lamer than that... the OEM's can deliver a dual boot system, with the second OS already installed, but they can't add the OS to the boot menu! I found this out in one of JLG's columns regarding BeOS.
Ahh yes. In the short term, the market always thinks rationally.
Huh?!

In short, every columnist and reviewer who criticizes Apple for making iPod Mac-only is just doing their work for them. That kind of criticism is EXACTLY what Apple needs right now... it just amounts to more people shouting out "here's something you can only do on a Mac."
If by 'something' you mean 'use the iPod', then you are correct.
However, if by 'something' you mean 'use a cool MP3 player', you are dead wrong.

What's really weird about Linux in the film industry is that the business / distribution / promotion side of the industry would love to outlaw free software. (SSSCA, DMCA, etc.)
Wow, what an amazing piece of FUD! Correct me if I am wrong, but everything the 'industry' has done with lawsuits is directed at software meant to break encryption or distribute their works more freely then they would like. E.g. they didn't want to outlaw DeCSS because it's free software, but rather because it broke DVD encryption!
You have to wonder if sooner or later some pointy-haired boss at the MPAA is going to wake up and go "WHAT! We USE Linux!? We use that communist, anti-American.... Well that had better stop immediately!"
Well seeing as how the MPAA does not create movies, I find this utterly ridiculous.
Kind of like you need a license for a car, but not for a bicycle. (Or continuing the analogy, Windows XP == tricycle...)
A car can be used to kill people and destroy people. It's much harder to do that with a bike!
Since this thing is supposed to sit in your hi-fi stack, it's not supposed to be portable, yes? And since it plays MP3s, it's assumed that you own a PC, yes?
Well if it's half as cool as the system that Be, Inc. was working on, you will pop in a new CD, and it will pull all the tracks off and start playing the CD. Then it encodes them into MP3's in the background.
I'm sure another use for this thing will be downloading/streaming music from the internet.
So no, you don't necessarily need a computer.
But I definitely won't buy one until they get 802.11b inside.
"We had horrendous weather and all kinds of problems in the production... "
Interestingly, if you watch the making-of featurette on the Braveheart DVD, you will find that Mel Gibson also had many difficulties with rain while filming in Scotland/Ireland.
I'd never really looked into Perl before, but after reading through that document, and look at the examples, (both of perl 5 and 6) I can safely say that I will never learn it.
You know, I had the same exact feeling the first time I opened my spanish book in high school!
So let me pass along some helpful advice.
First you learn the language, THEN you can read it. When you start learning any language, you don't learn all the nuances that make that language cool. You learn the simple stuff. You write the simple stuff. Then you pick up more advanced tricks along the way.
MS doesnt have a monopoly, and certainly not with XP. Ask RMS what OS he uses on his desktop PC. Or Malda, or Roblimo. Ask them how they can get the news, the weather, or listen to music. There is no MS Desktop OS monopoly any more. Its gone. Vanished. Quick as it came.
I'm sorry, but this is the most naive, ridiculous statement I have EVER read on slashdot. And that is really saying something!
So because a few nerds use Linux, Microsoft no longer has a monopoly? Buy yourself a dictionary,
or a clue. I guess you've conveniently forgotten that before Linux there were plenty of other OS's on the market, including the far more popular Mac OS, and yet Microsoft maintained a monopoly on the desktop all those years.
So please spare us from your Linux on the Desktop fantasy. In the real world, Microsoft still has the same monopoly they had a few years ago.
There's this thing called 'fair use'. I've been taking advantage of it with my VCR for years now. My VCR also has a button which lets me advance past commercials. Pretty neat, huh kids?
So they might as well kiss that part of their lawsuit goodbye, as it will not be going anywhere. However, don't everyone rejoice, because in a few years your favorite network shows will be interlaced with so many ads that it will make you sick.
Leo: Mr. President, your wife called, and she wants you to pick up some ICE COLD COCA COLA (beat) on the way home from the 'house.
President: Thanks, Leo. Please tell Charlie not to forget to put WORLD-CLASS MONTE BLANC PENS in my jacket pocket, like my dead secretary used to do!
Awww...they shied away from the obvious choice, tits.
No, I think that was a good decision. When I think of tits, I always imagine them in pairs.

Well I haven't seen the GUI "break," but I do still use the commandline, and it's still in Windows XP. It's just not DOS any more... Big whoop.
Nope. As has been stated over and over again, BeOS cannot and will not be relicensed as Open Source software.
I've heard of people not reading the article linked in a slashdot posting, but you take the cake! At least read the SUMMARY of the article before sounding off!

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.
In that same vein, George Carlin once said that on TV, "you can say you pricked your finger, but you can't say you fingered your prick!"
So there.

Which security flaws in XP are those?

Well have no fear, this unit has 320Gb (40GB) of storage.
