we used to use CVS on a linux box and have recently converted to GIT. my opinion was that SVN was terrible and not an option as a replacement for CVS. i am sure people will disagree. However, we are extremely happy with GIT.

our "central GIT repository" is located on a windows file share, and we check out our local copies from that. it is a fairly simple setup and the only work it requires is getting a windows file share, and i suppose learning some git commands. also the GIT extensions for Visual Studio seem to work quite well.

I am a fan of cygwin, but that isn't really a requirement to get GIT working on windows.

Are you trying to say there is a per transaction charge for handling cash?

yes actually there is! the store needs to keep their register stocked with small bills and change in order to make change for customers using cash. At least in the US businesses typically pay a fee to buy large quantities of coins and small bills from banks. sometimes they also need to pay a fee to deposit large quantities of coins, such as if they end up with too many nickels in the register and don't know what to do with them.

you also then have to somehow securely transfer the money to the bank, and the change from the bank to your registers. this is a direct cost that is incurred to the business for using cash.

as well a smart business balances their registers every night, or shift change. this takes 1 or more employees time to count the cash in the drawer to make sure your employee wasn't crooked and stealing from you. (or just stupid and doesn't know how to count out correct change)

there are other indirect costs to handling cash.
    1) making change is often slower than credit cards (time is money)
    2) you have various fraud risks, such as a bill being fake
    3) the cashier could just pocket the cash (or even just giving out the wrong change to the patron)
    4) it is a target for thugs. credit card receipts don't interest them much, but cash does.

    Handling cash definitely isn't free

The only thing the IPO was a mistake for were the speculators that thought it was a good idea to buy an overhyped stock that current available financial data was absolutely unable to justify the price they were asking.

i could even link some of my past comments, saying how overvalued i thought it was. however i still don't think it has hit bottom. eventually they may be worth what they were asking at their IPO, but they definitely aren't there yet.

the only problem the price drop may pose is a retention issue for some of the exec's who were compensated with too much stock, and now see it just losing value. similar to what Zynga is currently going through.

we have similar carrying space and calorie requirements to soldiers. I don't use MRE's. i do bring a lot of freeze dried stuff and essentially build my own homemade MRE. we do have some small compact camp stoves for heating them. there is enough stuff out there that you can make your own lightweight and compact MRE's that taste better. And if you aren't planning on marching or biking all day, then you also don't have the same calorie requirements.

noodle or rice packets are fairly lightweight, compact and last a long time.
freeze dried fruit makes a good crunchy snack, and lasts a long time.

  20. Re:Simple solution: on Cloud Firm MediaFire Flags Malware Samples For DMCA Violation, Bans Researcher · · Score: 2

a rather simple solution would be to attach a deposit to filing a DMCA notice. if the notice is unchallenged, or eventually goes to court and is won, then the deposit is returned.

if the notice is challenged, and the organization does nothing, then the content is restored and they lose their deposit. or if it goes to court and the challenger loses the case, then they also lose the deposit. maybe even have the deposit automatically be awarded towards the legal fees of the defendant in this case.

the deposit doesn't necessarily even have to be all that large. if it suddenly costs money to file a DMCA, the filers will at least double check before they file. right now it seems the really have no penalty if they are wrong, so they file first and ask question later.
