I tend to think that I have the time to do as I please, and I interact heavily with computers for most of it. My palm pilot is used as an information storage device. I use it to take notes, phone numbers, and e-cards of other palm owners. I don't use it to plan my time, keep work related material or anything of the sort. I take it with me wherever I go because the only numbers I can remember are IP addresses.
My computer is there for me when I get home, and I live in an apartment which leaves me with no yardwork. I enjoy simple meals, which are quick and easy to prepare.
I have no cellphone, because I consider them to be as much use as a land line. They are an intrusion, and any calls I get are some form of sales call. I only speak to three or four people at lengths of more than 3 minutes. The rest of the people I speak to are through IRC, ICQ or *gasp* real life.
My weekends are spent with my family for the most part, and I consider them more important than any technology I own. I don't feel disconnected or antisocial, in fact I dedicate this time because I consider it central in my life.
Still, I can see how technology would affect people to the degree that they have no life or leisure. When I take vacations (rarely) I go to porchville, or take care of things which need to be done. I may take a trip to a state park to relax.
I do not usually take a week off since I would become beyond stir-crazy with cabin fever. I rarely leave the state when I take time off because I've already visited about 19 of them, including the ones surrounding me.
The big problem is that vacations cost money, and I have constraints to that end of investment in my retirement, rent, and car/insurance payments. There is not much left after living bled the life out of you, not to mention taxes.
Am I unhappy? Nope, I'm quite satisfied actually. I think I find my escape on the net in new information, fiction, fact and opinion. I somehow don't feel the need to go to Rennes Le Chateau because I already know my way around town, have seen pictures of almost every square inch of it, and the complete history of the town. Not much more but to see it for myself.
G4 is more a brand name than a class distinguishment. The actual processor is MPC7400, not G4. G4 seems to be an Apple term for the system itself (perhaps Generation 4 ?) not the chip. You can get different speeds, but they do not add or take away from the name. The only place they seem to do this currently is the iMac, which has a "DV" version. This is still preferable to "iMac 8100".
On the one hand, they have rid the Beige Macs from the line. They have Changed it from numbers (bad for humans) to 4 recognizable brands (good for humans). They no longer resort to Quadra 8100 or somesuch. It is an iMac, and the specs are listed as needed/required. It is the G4, or the Powerbook (which I think still has numbers) and the iBook.
They also retire the previous release, and they have been consistent on releasing OS in the past 2 years. That is a good thing, as it shows a positive direction for the company.
Bad things include but are not limited to: The hockey puck mouse, the chiclet keyboard, and the 15in std monitor on the iMacs. Then again the iMac never claimed to be high end; it serves more of a family computer role. Unfortunately, the >$1000 price does not match the surfing machine image. It is quite expensive in its target market.
The $1800 (loaded with 256 RAM)DV is a great entry lever video editing system, something you still cannot get at that price point in PC land. The G4 systems have an astronomical price, decent performance, and good standard features. All this and a usable interface.
Carter gave a handicapped patient in one episode a tangerine iMac. The kid threw it on the floor. That was 1 of 3 episodes I've seen this season. Could be more out there.
If these two companies were to merge, I would never consider buying a macintosh. I was considering an iMac, and I will only buy one from an independent Apple. It is bad enough that Disney bought infoseek, my previous favourite search engine, and ABC, a network I don't care about anyways. Nope, I don't want this Mickey-Mouse company messing up such a Good Thing.
And here I was thinking the net is about information. Here it's really just a self-referential structure. Odd. I suppose that should say "computing will be less about computers and more about the net appliances" or something like that.
SuperPimps, the makers of PAN are still under a lawsuit with RIAA because RIAA claims PAN is specifically for stealing music. They want the pimps to take out the uudecode/b64 code, thus turning the newsreader into a eunuch. The problem with this is Microsoft IE, Netscape Communicator and News Rover all support automated download of newsgroups. I don't see anything on their sites about a RIAA lawsuit. I suppose you have to go after the people with little money to defend themselves first. At least the Superpimps have some legal support from Andover. Thanks guys!
While not affiliated with Superpimps, Angelo still thinks it is a kickass reader that should not be maimed by stupid baseless lawsuits.
Is it perhaps possible to drop pure Na instead of NaCl into the water? As far as I can recall, Na reacts with water to create a rather violent reaction. Shot across the room in high-school. That may have been Potassium though. It is a bit more reactive:).
That would be swing's standard widget set. Java Apps can also conform to the OS's prefs, but I think the "metal" look is a lot better than most os design in the first place. It is one of the few truly cool widget styles.
Did you ever notice on your electric bill there are charges for "lost energy"? This is the loss of transmission through power lines. Batteries are rarely an effecient solution. Carbon-fiber would be more efficient, but still not efficient enough for heavy use. Those Terex Titan dump trucks out there still run Diesel, but as a generator for their four powerful wheel motors. The same would be more efficient for a car, as it doesn't have to race up and down during shifts, instead running smoothly to produce more power, and shunting excess to/from a flywheel.
BTW: though much work has been done to scrub outgoing emissions from power plants, coal burning plants still put more radiation into the air than do nuclear plants. This is part of the nature of coal. No big deal, sine coal plants have been along about as long as DC current and AC current systems. It only affects where they put the stacks: your nation's farmland.
I have often thought about this myself. Gramatically speaking, you can go very far by simply removing certain adjectives, like liberal, conservative, etc. Then you replace people's races with null space. e.g., the stories of a white (always mentioned) man shooting a black (again always mentioned) man, or a black (rarely mentioned) man shooting a white (rarely mentioned) man. If you fix the race-specific adjectives, you get a "man shoots man" and you realise that the article is un-newsworthy aside from statistical value.
Then again, I'd just like to see a robot report the news.
Wow, coward, I didn't know that. I suppose you are (+1, insightful) or perhaps inciteful for that matter. My suggestion is perhaps it is time for/. to turn off Katz's posts, did you ever think of that?
The founders weren't all necessarily Christians, but they absolutely believed in God
OK, now go to the top of the thread. That is what I was saying. They were mostly not Xian, but they beleived in a god. That is Deism.
The idea of a god is in all religions. Even buddhists acknowledge the "om" as the sumerians recognized "mummu" the primal chaos (this translates to greek and roman mythology as well.) from which all is spawned.
There was a move to put the words "Jesus our creator" but the Jesus was left out for a more regular natural non specific "god".
Call it what you want, but most people with the possible exception of aethiests believe in a god of one form or another.
Many Christians who think of America as founded upon Christianity usually present the Declaration as "proof." The reason appears obvious: the document mentions God. However, the God in the Declaration does not describe Christianity's God. It describes "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God." This nature's view of God agrees with deist philosophy but any attempt to use the Declaration as a support for Christianity will fail for this reason alone.
In fact, the Declaration of independence was a declaration of our final separation from Great Britain. It did not set forth much more than that. The foundation for our government today is the Constitution. It defines the basic laws of the land.
To all you fundies out there (I suppose there aren't many on/.) The founders of our country were not "born again" Christians but most of them were not as shown here. I now return you to your complacency.
Wow, I thought this was news for nerds, stuff that matters. I now know why Katz no longer works at Wired, and why Suck constantly comments on him 12345 (and about 40 other hits on their search). He is (-1 offtopic)!
Corporatism, "Hellmouth", while interesting, belong more an something like brill's or adbusters, but they would not accept them. These magazines have editorial control, they actually proof facts and check grammar before they post. Does/. do this? no. They allow katz to stray so far off focus it is ridiculous. Unless it is about tech issues or geek culture (which you ar not a part of katz) do not post it. What the hell's the point, this place is getting more innacurate, sucking more daily and I can get my news anywhere else. bye. moderate as necessary. I no longer care.
Right, since you don't need anything else to get a strong basis of what religion X,Y, and Z are by the first three chapters. What makes them unique? Wouldn't it be better to include some of the later teachings? something outside of the semitic (actually pre-sumerian) realm? The Talmud and the Quran are both important, as is the new Testament of the bible in defining their respective groups. To state we don't need anything else because we have a creation myth is an argument based on shaky ground indeed. Keep in mind that these religions keep this story as a tradition and a myth, not as literal truth. To some fundies, the earth is 6,000 years old. This doesn't even jive when you consider there are stories even older still than the first recorded semitic histories (in the talmud).. You simply can't make it fit. That is part of the reason you need to include other stories from all three books. A history of law from Hammurabi or the Middrash would be nice. This is a function philosophy, and it would translate well. Anyways, here's hoping they don't get to centered on one or two points of view..
Genesis is older then christianity. Wow, that's just like I said above. Yes I know that the three semitic-based religions believed the story, and yes I know it is pre-everything. Genesis exists in one form or another in most semitic texts. The Quran may not have it in the same form. Now to my point. There is more wisdom than genesis out there. Whatever you may make of the story of Adam(adapu) and eve(forgot for the moment), there are other things that are honestly christian, muslim, judaic, buddhist, etc. I agree with your statment towards linguistics. It would give them one heckuva rosetta stone.
If there is an apocalypse and humanity needs a record of the past, wouldn't it be handier to include something other than a record of who begat who? The first three chapters do not contain the begats -- that is in genesis 4-25, and not all in one place. besides the fact that genesis is a myth. Not to be flamebait or anything, but it is an akadian/sumerian myth about adapu (which means earth)... There is no reason to include this since it represents a minority culture in the world. If you want to represent the world, include something from the Quran, the Buddhist Sutras, the Talmud, the Middrash, Hammurabi's code and the codices of Nag Hammadi. There is much more out there than christianity.

I think it still worked. Rubberizing the cases seemed to do the trick!

All this to run a theme park.
I'd hate to see what they run under disney.
