Also their decent shows are not available at all. They only seem to be posting full episodes of their crap shows. (no Heroes for you!) They also seem to take longer to get their new episodes online than do the torrenting pirates....Also... it seems to be one of these crap flash player things. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get that to display full-screen on my TV.
Fox has there shows online with less ad's then on tv and it download a lot faster then an torrent. Fox has their shows online with less ads than on tv and they download a lot faster thana torrent.
I guess the goal is make honest people stay honest. Ah, I think I've found the problem.
Is that really your goal? Does your boss know and agree with that? It seems like an oddly high-minded thing for a business to be doing.
All the businesses I'm aware of have only one goal and that is to make more money. The question you should be asking yourself is will this course of action put more money in our pockets or not? If there is not a significant likelihood or guarantee of more money at the end of the day then you are wasting your time.
While I don't wish to burden legitimate users, I do want to prevent most piracy. That is very funny. BTW, I want to sleep with lots of beautiful women but I don't want to have to talk them and form relationships. What are my (legal) options?
Snarky comments aside; here is your fundamental problem: There is no way to detect the legal status of a software licensing contract using software. It is not a property of the system you or programming on.
Things like WGA and license key systems are an attempt to add a property to the system that represents the legal status of the user and then try to keep that flag in sync with reality. The only practical way we know of to keep this flag in sync with the actual users contract status is to force the user himself to keep it in sync. Usually this means manually copying a key from paper to the system when installing, re-installing, upgrading or moving the software.
There really is no hope. Don't waste your time on it.
oh wait, i thought of a way to do it! Just write software that nobody wants!
Indeed, I am using Django for several projects and it really has freed me from reading/writing SQL queries. Django has actually made my life easier and more pleasant in so many ways...
Can I use this article as an excuse to rant about how much I hate working with SQL? I'm working in python mostly and when I have to touch SQL it is like a... a... something really nasty. Can someone please declare SQL legacy technology? pretty please?
Profanity is like high volume in music. Mozart uses it to great effect. There are lots of musicians who don't use it well... they just play at full volume constantly. Profanity is very powerfull and if used well it can be an important part of great writing.
Almost every single person in Washington needs to be removed and sent home for a few years. Two complete years with none of the normal people in Washington.
If we were alone in this world, it would be a great thing to do. But we are just one country on this planet, so I'm not sure I want to imagine what a more openly anti-US country would do during that time. My fantasy:
1) Bring your entire army and Navy home. 2) Deploy them on the borders for 5-10 years. 3) devolve responsibility for any vital domestic services to state governments. 3) Completely shut down your federal government. 4) hold 3-6 years of debates and referendums to decide what kind of federal system you want. 5) hold elections and construct/staff your new federal government agencies.
I would even recommend an amnesty for the criminals in the current system so that you can get a full account of what went wrong.
Private sites with ratios are in my experience not worth the effort. Quite frankly I get better transfer speeds from the public torrents. When it comes to torrents, the more peers the better.
In fact, you know what all the registration/ratio crap reminds me of? DRM. It is a practically useless regime of restrictions and limitations that just get in the way of me downloading the video I wanted and watching it as soon as possible. I think ratio sites are really driven by kids wanting to feel elite, not by a desire to maximize download speeds.
The only redeeming quality I've found is the better quality control of the content of the torrents.
ah well. If what you're looking for is today's episode of your favourite tv show or a big name movie released in the last few months then the public sites are the way to go without a doubt. Maybe there are other niches that are much better served by the private sites.
about WMD's, when we all thought they were there. I'm so tired of hearing that. Nobody I know thought there were WMDs. It was always obvious that your government was lying to you. If you thought there were WMDs you need to re-examine how you gather information. Your news sources are probably shit.
There are societal norms and in many cases the legal system reflects those norms. In modern western society rules are (for the most part) based on a few simple principles. 1) You cannot do things that hurt other people. 2) You cannot do things that unreasonably exploit the vulnerable. (children, mentally handicapped etc)
Those are the principals that lead to rules restricting sexual intercourse with minors and rape/murder.
Why should society not dictate whether someone should be able to rot their mind [...] because they watch porn? Because rotting one's own mind does not hurt other people or take undue advantage of the vulnerable. It is unreasonable and wholly unjustified for anyone to dictate how I should behave with the sole exception of how my behaviour may negatively affect other people in the community. If you live in a fee western society this is something you may have learned in civics class.
As for the notion that watching people having sex will 'rot their mind' I really have to wonder what the heck you're talking about. I'll assume that you are not speaking literally... I take it that you are suggesting that watching sex will have a negative affect on my ability to think and make rational decisions. Is that what you mean? I'm really having a hard time with that statement as it does not seem to make any sense. Could you please explain?
If so, I'll say that porn is just sex. For that reason it is not the best way to observe human sexual practices. Ok, you lost me there. Those two sentences are logically inconsistent.
...their method of reproduction, and what they use to express love... Those are certainly not the only reasons to have sex. In fact, they are probably not even the most common reasons to have sex. People have sex mostly because of how it makes them feel. (good)
I can't see any useful, non-self-satisfying reason for watching it Again, your statements seem to be internally inconsistent. Are you suggesting that satisfying our desires is not useful? Fulfilling needs, satisfying desires is practically the definition of useful. I beginning to think we're using different dictionaries...
because it isn't like you can take part in the emotion that the 2+ people experience that are in the porn video Again, there is much more to sex than reproduction, love and emotion. There is a significant amount of physical pleasure. Stimulating certain clusters of nerves produces physical pleasure usually building up and up to something called an orgasm which feels fantastic. I'll not go into the details in this post, I'll let you investigate that for yourself. Wikipedia probably has a thorough entry on the subject.
I agree completely. The entire spectrum of possible pornographic material is available on the internet. As with all the other learning kids do by reading/listening/watching things on the internet/elsewhere they need to be able to distinguish between the 'good' information, the 'mediocre' and the 'horrible' stuff. Sexual information is particularly tricky in part because of the strong feelings and emotions it can evoke in us when we see it. Strong emotions can certainly make good judgment more difficult.
In some ways porn is actually a fair bit easier to judge than other kinds of info. I really just boils down to 'is everyone happy and treating each other nicely?' and the importance of treating each other nicely is a lesson that should come long, long before sexual desire starts. 'bad' porn is really just the porn where someone is being hurt or treated disrespectfully and you don't need to know much about sex to recognize that.
But, like I said in the first paragraph, little johnny seeing sex for the first time could easily be overwhelmed. I suggest we flood the Internet with 'good' porn. This will dilute the 'bad' stuff and reduce the chances that our little angels will get off on the wrong foot. (no pun intended)
So as it stands if you think someone can learn about human sexuality from watching porn I think you may need to see your local area psychologist. er, um.. what? That statement is just... wow. over-the-top ridiculous. I mean... wow.
I suppose you're either trolling or just delusional but I'll bite.
Porn is a product of thousands of years of refinement by market forces to cater to the sexual desires of humans (or at least men). As such it is reasonable to conclude that it portrays the sexual desires of men reasonably accurately. Maybe we're talking about different things... when I refer to human sexuality I am talking about the observed sexual activities, desires and fantasies of humans. Are you perhaps confusing this with someone's idea of what human sexuality should be? I'd like to suggest that you need to visit your 'local area' scientist.
anyone who thinks anyone (especially kids) *should* learn human sexuality from watching porn. Holy straw-man batman. not-banning something and using it to teach kids are rather different things don't you think? don't put words in my mouth.
No one under 18 should want porn. It could be argued no one over 18 should watch it either. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that first sentence was a mistake. Otherwise there was no point responding at all as you must be taking your biology lessons from a priest. That being said, I totally disagree with the your idea that porn should be avoided. Why? well, I happen to think that people a beautiful when they're naked. I also think that sex and sexual touching are some of the most wonderful things in this world. People should feel free to watch, dream about and do as much of it as possible and I've never heard a convincing argument to the contrary.
It has been reported that the sun has risen in Nigeria today. Analyst are in agreement that the sun will almost certainly rise again probably once each day for the next few weeks.
Also: filters? get a fucking clue. How about instead we just use these internets to send the offending officials some biology texts so that can learn about human sexuality and stop trying to stifle it.
1) AV companies whitelist trojan used by government agents. 2) government agents install said trojan on all the bad-guys computers.
So now all the known bad guys have copies of a trojan that is whitelisted by the AV software... What could possibly go wrong? That's exactly the level of intelligence I've come to expect from this government.
Oh wait, maybe they'll copyright the the trojan so the bad guys can't copy it and use it on other computers...
Any AV company that co-operates with such a plan is incompetent.
You missed the point. The cost of living difference would fade away if people had the same freedom of movement that money did. The cost of living difference is a proximate cause of the outsourcing but is itself a result of trade/capital freedom in the absence of labour freedom.

I'm getting a kick out of this discussion because I am sitting here downgrading two new machines which came infected with vista to XP.

You're probably right.
I still don't like it.
We need a third way.
Riiiight....
I totally believe you.
So does my amazingly hot girlfriend... but she lives in france so you can't ask her yourself.
Does your imaginary brother's band have a name?

I propose a new article posting filter for slashdot: Posters must pass grade-6 reading comprehension and grammar tests.
One of these days I'm going to snap and just stop reading slashdot.
