What do you see in the way of the internet allowing for a greater pool of candidates to be heard from. Do you think the Republicrat 2 party system will be able to use the dollars to maintain the current lock on power or that other parties(ie-reform, etc) will be able to gain a larger voice because of the new universal medium? How do you think Al Gore and/or his web committee would feel about being part of (or sponsoring) some sort of site where ALL candidates were given equal treatment(ie, they're all asked the same questions, viewers can browse through). This is somewhat akin to allowing more than the 2 major parties at the debates...
how quickly new articles get posted every time there is a "slashdot is now owned by" or "we have taken some semi-controlling action" article....do you guys save a few to post and then put em up shortly after these announcements on purpose?
I mean if its just to try to have people overlook the articles because you don't want them to read them, but feel obliged to post them, than i completely understand.......
I guess when you convince the wall-street clowns that your company is worth its weight in gold, you get to talk like some sort of highflying marketing fool. Larry doesn't need to sell VA to the slashdot audience, he needs to let us know they're not gonna be screwing us over. IMO, that post did the contrary, and they've already "sold out"....
this article only gets published in this universe...in the OTHER universe(we'll call it next year, after some merging goes through)...all these things get reported by CNN as GREAT!! and offering a LOT more to the customer by taking away all those nit-picky choices that no one would want to have make THEMSELVES>..!
Id like to complain here about lack of options. While clearly, as is specified by the completely unoffical contest rules only hemos is eligible to WIN this award....I would like to be able to vote for other people as well. I'm just as much a hemos fan as the next person, but its a bit limiting. Someone must have nominated someone other than hemos for this award. Its only fair to the reader that we be allowed to vote for other people, only to have our votes discarded due to their inappropriateness. So please, update this vote, and dont lock is into voting for only hemos.
The problem is not THIS particular merger "taking over the internet" or whatever it might be trying to do...but the increasing stupidity of people in believing that they actually WANT a lot of the content that gets offered. Does anyone look at the stuff on the news/tv/magazines/movies these days. Its useless. Somehow an environment has been created where the mega-media not only gets to deliver content, but to tell everyone what content they want -- and have the people BELIEVE THEM
Its somewhat ironic that after casting him into a light which was that of someone opposed to ideologies, you have suggested that he serve as a role model and as man of the century. Not that I am AGAINST what he's done, but isnt worshipping him somewhat inverse to what you are saying?
no, i dont believe any of that. How can you prove it? You cant. I dont really accept any of "reality" as real, nor do i think anyone else should...of course, i have a pig full of spaceships so what do i know?
I think every other day of every other month of every other year of every other decade of every other century of every other millenium of every other.....etc....so its only at all relevant(ha!) because were on the last odd day of the last odd month of the last odd year of an odd millenium...for the first time since they kept track of time....im sure the november 19, 9999 slashdot crowd will have fun being the last odd day of this ice-age??
No, this is not a new era for mankind. I still got out of the right side of my bed and put my pants on one leg at a time this morning. My computer still ran linux, and a couple hundred million other computers still run windows, just like they did last friday. They still work with the same functionality(or lack thereof) as they did last friday. When Joe Consumer walks into COMPSUPERSTOREGALORE next weekend, they are still going to be presented with a variety of wintel options. This is a step, but this is not a revolution. -Matt Jankowski
thing to be careful with there...is that you would get informed people running the country. This of course....goes against the current system and therefore would be a bad thing. -Matt Jankowski
its really ALWAYS in beta. There is not a finished product. Its just that the "beta" is a lot more usable than what proprietary calls "beta". -Matt Jankowski
just out of curiosity, how are they giving the people on "the list" special permission beyond anyone who can try to get in early on IPO's through e*trade or witcapital or anyone else who lets you try to do that on a fairly regular basis...obviously you are logged in to your etrade account, but how does redhat communicate to them of "hey, this guy is our special buddy, let him in"... -Matt Jankowski
Why not just change the terms under which you look at the protocol to include that if you write software to connect to their servers and use their user database, it must show THEIR ads and it MUST be opensource(so they can look through to make sure its checking their ads if they want). That way they are protected from getting screwed on the hardware end by giving out free service and putting money in someone elses pocket, yet at the same time, people can write clients for whatever platform they want. They should also request that MS release the protocol for their service and write the functionality to be connected to both services at once into the next AIM client. This would be out of hand at first, but if a standard was approved(IETF or someone) then it would be easy to just pick which service you want to connect to, and have the client handle looking across the different DB's for people online using whatever service they might be. So long as the ads are displayed from the server you are using, the $$ people wont mind. Hell, I bet someone would throw up a server(im://i_like_to_im.slashdot.org??) and display some nice OS community ads(fm,t.o,/.,etc..) -Matt Jankowski
I think it makes sense to have a standard, and in fact, if there were ONE user database this would be nice too, other than that, it will be technically silly to have the AIM user db, MS's, yahoo, icq, etc. Im sure once the standard was open, all the software could connect to any of the databases, but whose hardware would it sit on?? And who would control it? Those are really the only reasons a proprietary database(not a proprietary standard) is a good thing. Not sure how you could compensate for using someones database with your client, maybe there would be an ad standard and X percent of the ads in your client have to be pulled from the hosts database(since thats the reward in hosting it anyway) -Matt Jankowski
check out "the amazing crowns" (formerly amazing royal crowns) for some good modern day rock/rockabilly. They are on the warped tour this year, and they are damn good, new CD coming out soon too. -Matt Jankowski
Havent they already done that?...
so, uh...the code is still free. Who cares whose name is on the distro?
I dont think we could prevent it, but I'm sure we could get them in court after.
didnt those things eat plastic at some point? Damn that Crichton! He's done it again.
Writing a book is one thing, putting fungi into space is quite another, GOOD DOCTOR...
Isnt an "individualist movement" somewhat of an oxymoron? 'Banding together to act for ourselves' doesnt make much sense to me...

If not for the Y2K hype...I'd say it was 1984...

its yellow? come on.
This is a tiny robot, it needs to be black, to convey power(and a strong sexual drive).
