There is no country called Scandinavia. There is a region called Scandinavia.

And dude I think the parent poster used something called irony.

  2. Wrong target - Adservers are compromised Drones on Lycos Declares War on Spam Servers · · Score: 1

Quite often solution suggestions are presented like this one. Its catchy, quick and oh so stupid.

You cannot fight a sustained battle against a foe that can acquire unlimited resources for free. The spammers use drones for much of their dirty work, sending spam, and serving ads, sales etc. What good will this do if the spammers just recruit more drones out there to cope with the DDoS from Lycos. (And yes it is a DDoS no doubt).

All this will do is to create a lot of badwill for the antispam cause among ISPs.

  3. Reactive protection gives false sense of security on Malware - Fighting Malicious Code · · Score: 1

I would add - never open attachments at all. Many viruses propagate through addressbooks thus making the attachment seem like it is coming from a trusted source.

Since signature based virus protection is a reactive discipline rather than a proactive one (you are assuming that the virus is discovered before you get attacked), it is imperative that behaviour based alternatives are used.

Also while not using commodity software or other well known targets might protect you somewhat, the Witty worm decidedly disproves that assumption.

Other than that it seems that your practices are sound.

I am amazed that people are not utilising the customer not present liability of the spammer on the credit card transactions.
If transactions are refuted then the spammer gets no money.
Weird, one would expect the hardcore anti-spamming crew to do something like that?

The service maps physical adresses to email-adresses. So far so good.

    Opt-out ability.. Good.
    Free.. Good.
    Bills in electronic form.. Great!

If one is not signed up for the service the junkmail goes out in paper form.. Good for the advertisers..

The only request I would have would be to be able to link the system to internet banking and some money management/budget program like Xor Compact.

Easy to keep track of expenditure in an easy way.. Specially good for people working and living in one country and still paying bills in Sweden.

Wish I had this service when I was contracting abroad.. not having to have family pick up bills and stuff.

    This is Borak speaking!

This is mainly for mp3s tho.. Encoded at 192 with proper codecs they do not sound too bad.

Why have 100s and 100s of cds in ones living room when one can have it all on a harddrive and save space?

Plus the fact that ones cds wont be stepped upon by drunken mates as they are safe in storage. Or if one has a break-in in the flat, then the cds are safe.. never mind the computers.. How are you going to find that one-off cd you bought in a dodgy alley?

Same thing will go with films more and more.. Sometimes it is hard to get films on DVD/VCD locally, thus one can download them if lucky. Download Bollywood videos captured off satellite channels.. woohoo!!

Apartements in London are far too small to house large bulky cds, dvs and other stuff.. better to have 160GB HDs.. Now if only the property prices could crash... pleeeeease..

  10. crap "tech" on Geoworks Demands Royalties For All WAP Apps · · Score: 0

    Well who cares..

    WAP is utterly useless.
The concept of mobile internetaccess is a good one if it is based on standards. WAP is a place you dont want to go.

Use the proper Internet standards like HTTP, HTML and IP (Although WAP-gateways use IP in some applications)

One way to approach the idea of WAP and to make it open for future appliances is to maybe have a new header field in HTTP that states which res,col etc the appliance has.

Sort of like the accept header field where one can say no to GIF and yes to PNG..

    Cheers,
