    x86/x64 will rule in desktops and servers for the foreseeable future. They are not in danger of obsolescence at this time. Despite a desire, Intel has never been in the mobile market, and while it's a lost opportunity, it's not as if they've been squeezed out -- they were never there.

    I bought the first-gen iPad 3G the day it first went for sale in the US. It did not require a data plan then, and it doesn't require one now. Which backwater do you live in that forces you to purchase a data plan with, or to use, an iPad?

    That's a ridiculous proposition. Laws don't stop criminals. If they did, they wouldn't be criminals! MegaUpload flourished for as long as it did because it takes time to make a case. It is not moral to preemptively punish via laws like SOPA before harm has been proven in court.

    You don't need to explain copyright. You just need to use logic.

    If existing laws are inadequate, the FBI would not have been able to take down MegaUpload. MegaUpload has been taken down, thus existing laws must be adequate. QED.

    Any alternative is better than Affirmative Action. Giving someone a job because they belong to a minority is equivalent to not giving someone a job because they aren't in the minority, which is racist/sexist.

    I hate XML more or less as much as the next guy, but it has one advantage not really shared by any other format: every relevant development environment has libraries out the wazoo to manipulate it. That means less custom parsers and crap that is likely to introduce bugs.

    Cocoa Touch, for example, uses plists, which are XML when stored in text form, extensively. The framework classes have lots of support for them, including loading and saving class hierarchies with a single method call.

    Where did you get the idea that an idea has been copyrighted? It's very clear, even from the summary, that it is a particular photograph and the compositional elements which comprise the image that are considered to be under copyright.

    The judge determined that the purpose of the infringing photo was to recreate the original photo. If the original is copyrighted, the second is a derivative work, by intent, if not through PhotoShop skills.

    Why are so many on slashdot completely unable to realize that Judges are perfectly within their rights to judge intent, as well as mechanical actions taken? The law is not a computer program, no matter that you want it to be.

    What does what you write have to do with the topic on hand? Copyright law does not depend on the intent or desire of the creator of a specific piece of art. If photography is an art, it's an art. It doesn't matter whether "society" values it or not. That's completely irrelevant.

    Chrome is not and has never been an MDI program. Virtually every Windows program exits when the last window is closed. (Some apps hide a window in the task bar.)

    Funny that. Best Buy and Newegg also want a cut for that software they had nothing to do with writing. Complain that Apple offers no other source (for iOS apps), if you like, but complaining about the cut just belies ignorance and/or hate.
