    What kind of idiot OS do you run? Mac OS X will switch to the faster network interface automatically, even in the middle of a transfer (if the end-point is reachable over both). No user interaction required.

    Perhaps if your system was designed for usability, you wouldn't need a silly hardware button.

    Protecting property shouldn't be necessary at all. Once someone is trying to steal my belongings, they have waived any rights to safety they might have had. To give the criminal rights while they are committing a crime is to remove all rights from the victim. That is not just.

    Those would be reasons they don't want to comply. Not reasons they are unable to.

    It seems to me that a simple solution is to make it legal to pirate (to use the vernacular) any content received with these boxes. Actually encode into law that any media transmitted to these boxes automatically enters the public domain for as long as the software's license is violated. They'd clean up really fast or lose their market.

    That's not really true at all. There is almost no hardware in a typical Dell that is not supported by Linux. I can't speak for BSD, but Dell doesn't bundle any version of BSD.

    What drives down the cost for the Windows bundle is all the extra software included with the OEM image, such as trials for McAfee or Symantec AV products. Software publishers pay Dell to include those, so Dell charges consumers less in order to attract more business.

    Umm, no. Software that hashes the BIOS for comparison purposes will be reading the flash itself, not relying on the BIOS at all.

    I'd say huge FAIL. An app should have no need to know about http to get an image from any program to an image editor. What would happen if you dragged it out of an email attachment? Would gimp use imap to retrieve it?

    Linux GUI usability is a huge FAIL compared to its commercial competitors.

    I fail to understand the moral or ethical basis for extended copyright.

    Modern copyright has nothing to do with fostering creativity and is concerned only with guaranteeing income in perpetuity. I absolutely despise entitlement and those who stand up for copyright deserve to die penniless.

    So far, none of the cures for "Global Climate Change" are better than the problem.

    It seems to me to be a fact that life would only get worse for me if we were to implement any of the more drastic solutions. As most everyone on the planet feels the same way, there's no logical reason to do anything.

    The absolute worst possible outcome is that we consume all technologically-related resources and have to fall back on subsistence living. That's only a tragedy if you happen to be alive during the change.
