I'm not so sure (that people wouldn't go for a bit lower quality video).

Look at how VCD's took off (in a big way) in Asia.

The mass market (at least in Aus and the US) hasn't been given the chance of doing the "MP3 for Video" thing.

I think if you could download all your favourite TV shows and movies and watch them when you want and where it may take off.

I think a lot of it has to do with convenience.

TiVo has made TV convenient for me, and I watch it rather than the HDTV available (real-time).

And that, my friend, is most likely exactly what was said about every other company that was doing well (too well) and didn't see the iceberg coming or make a radical change of course (when there was no apparent need to).

I haven't read the book but from what I have read about it it seems that the only way to survive in the long run is to kill yourself (or eat your young as someone else said). Death to Microsoft. Long live Microsoft!

It's about doing things that don't have a strong business plan, that are not what some enthusiastic and brilliant career manager recommends. Of course, there are probably only one or two people in MS who could/should be doing this.

Of course, I've never run a billion dollar business, and don't have a Harvard Business degree, so what would I know ...

  4. Apple without Steve Jobs? on Steve Jobs Undergoes Cancer Surgery · · Score: 1

What would happen to Apple if Steve Jobs was nolonger CEO for some reason?

Steve is obviously the key driving force in Apple and this is not good for the long-term, unless a good succession plan is in place and someone is being groomed for the job.

Companies that tend to last ages (doing very well) generally don't have to have CEOs like Steve Jobs (charismatic etc) but they do have to have a strong vision and core values (amongst other things).

Importantly, they also need a good succession plan and grooming of future CEOs.

Unfortunately, I think Apple is too heavily reliant on Steve Jobs, the whole company is sort of like the hands and feet for his "mind," which doesn't bode well if his mind leaves.

Let's hope that Apple is trying to groom someone with the same characteristics (not necessarily charisma) as Steve, and building the vision and core values into the company itself.

Long live Apple (and Steve Jobs)!

  6. Checkout WebObjects! on Phillip Greenspun: Java == SUV · · Score: 1

I agree the Java platform currently (in its "standard" form) lacsk entry to mid-level ease-of-use that PHP and other scripting based platforms allow, and also .Net allows.

However, check out WebObjects (Apple's Java SE based Web development and deployment environment). It blows away PHP and the others, and .Net, and Java2 EE for everything but high-end enterprise apps.

If it doesn't blow your mind (particularly the DirectToWeb and DirectToJavaClient frameworks) then you're probably dead already :-) It gets MVC right, persistence right, ease-of-use right etc.

Seriously, check it out (in fact, run don't walk to get a copy). It enables development on Windows and MacOSX and deployment on any Java 1.3.1+ environment (pretty much).

    Cheers,
    Ashley.

PS I am not an Apple employee although I have done some WebObjects training for them and received educational grants (ie Macs to use in research etc).

Yeah, me too. Is the UK the only place you can buy a PAL Tivo (btw, I know it has been possible to mod an NTSC Tivo to PAL)?

Also, the new Series 2 functions they discuss (playing MP3s and displaying photos from your computer), are these tied to the premium service?

Thanks - that's really informative and just the answer I was looking for.

I understand the real-world constraints of "doing it myself" and most likely won't ...

It's just that I am not sure TiVo does PAL and I haven't seen them in shops in Australia.

Would be fun to do though.

What's the chance of me (or someone) doing something like this on their own (ie to create something like a TiVo or ReplayTV or whatever they call them boxes that record and playback TV on a hard disk)? My video's broke and I don't want to buy another one (since our local video store closed anyway). I just want to record regular programs (only a few hours a week) and play them back (skipping the adds) at my convenience! What sort of components could I get of the shelf and how much would it roughy cost? For example, TV tuner and video capture and playback ... PC - how fast, how much memory, how big hard disk? OS - could a standard Linux release hack it? SW - what about an app? (an "MP3 player" 4 video) Sure would be nice to be able to play DVDs (and record them ie the new Pioneer drive), as well as store digital pics and MP3 music. My guess is this is going to be the killer app / system of this decade! Just an idea (I really don't want to buy a video) Cheers, Ashley.
