However, I can confidently say that the Second Circuit Court is not qualified to judge Judge Jackson negatively. Any layperson who can grasp the key technical issues of this case and unerringly follow them through to their legal implications as he has done is clearly not "stupid". If the Second Circuit Court judges think so, it is they who are stupid.

I don't see that as being very likely. Do you know how restricted Internet access is in China? The government is deathly afraid of "subversive" ideas getting in, and likewise of helping political dissidents communicate over the net. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the GPL to prevent use by oppressive, non-democratic regimes. Back in the day, the League for Programming Freedom concerned itself with banning possible military use of free software. Somehow that concern faded away with the Cold War, and own the LPF is known exclusively for opposing software patents. Perhaps it is time to bring back the restriction "This software may not be used for any military means" and add "nor may it be used by non-democratic governments." Yes, I know the definition is hairy, but I'm sure the U.N. or a similar institution publishes ewll-justified ratings of who is democratic and who isn't. Do any of you international politics experts out there (there must be some!) care to comment? Oxblood Ruffin, are you there?

One of my Palm-toting friends uses this solution: He cuts a rectangle of Saran Wrap with the dimensions of the screen and sticks it on with static electricity. (Actually, he does it to protect the screen from stylus scratches, but it works equally well for what you want.)
You could keep such a "Palm condom" around and apply it whenever you use it as a remote.

Yep... As I understand it, the supposedly-so-great thing about FORTRAN is that it allows you to ocntrol floating-point precision better than C. (Disclaimer: I've never written in FORTRAN, and, from what I've seen of other people's FORTRAN code, I never will.) But since when do operating systems use floating-point operations? I/O is all integral, program logic is integral, symbol processing (e.g. for shells) is integral, and traditional text processing is a special case of integral computation where all operands are a byte wide. About the only thing you'd use floats for would be interaction with the real-time clock, I would guess. That's important for scheduling, but the degree of precision of the floats is not so relevant... the default works fine.
In short, FORTRAN may be good for number-crunching, ubt that doesn't make it a good language for writing OSs.
