    ...Ani DiFranco and ChuckD would use it. Honestly, most musicians make little or no money off royalties and simply live off advances. It i is as bad as indentured servitude. Sure there are examples like the Stones who rake it in, but they had to get burned hard before they struck off on their own.

    Agreed. I use MySQL everyday in lieu of Oracle. I am really tired of the Real Soon Now status of MySQL. Coding subselects in Perl is no fun and not having commit and rollback in a usable state sucks. But I'd like to see Oracle run so fast on so little.

    Alcatel Speed Touch Home Bridge hooked to Cheap Linksys firewall/router hooked to Cisco 1900 series switch. Not all of the Speed Touch equipment is the same. If you are using a cross over cable to connect to the shitty thing then you need to firewall your machine not the router.

    Granted on one level, but did you have a junior administrator "update" a server with 7.0 and then wonder why the mail wasn't being delivered? Then discover the Microsoftish rhn daemon spanking you with file descriptors galore because the have an incompetent coder in the fold. Sounds like MSFT and RHAT are equivocal in some respects: the ones that matter.

    Dear FBI,
    I am a Unix administrator at a large land-grant research university in the South. We have 36000 users spread across 5 campuses. Sendmail is hosed and SIMS won't be ready for the beginning of the semester. There are only 8 of us administering this mess. And only 3 who handle the mail hosts. Put this on us and we will die like Viking war dogs. I am begging you pick the University of Alabama...

    As someone fairly close to the situation, about 20 miles, I can tell you that SNMP is a good example of the academy turning to profit after coming up with something worthwhile.

    Isn't it interesting that every README and INSTALL of GNU snmpd distributions have a history of the horrors of the broken SNMP implementation. They tend to center around the fractures in the protocol standard caused by competing interests. I wonder how good SNMP could've been had the players got together and really put this to a standard rather than allow the market to create three or four camps. Well, just ruminating.....

    Amen. I have a hand-me-down Indy that runs like it was just pull from the crate. You just have to diligently patch that SHITTY OS. Absolutely no reason to throw it away. Makes a great workstation. Now if I can get a port of Linux for it -- great.

    Get with it Bucko. Gore sucks (and I am a Tennesseean!) but I'd rather face a shit-covered sharpened stick for 4 years that the general rape of civil rights that is going to occur when that privileged jerk GWB gets in power.

    I can do my job from anywhere on the planet and I think I'll start looking for a nice emerging democracy to expat come November.

    Its one thing to be a geek and buy that hardware to prove a slashdot statement right. But anyone with an open mind would figure that this is just a IBM marketing ploy.

    This is redundant. IBM = Huge Corportation. Huge Corporation = Marketing Department. Marketing Department = Useless Circus Stunts. Give this one credit: at least it is interesting.

    Oh yea, I have a pet parrot which says "linux" everytime you say hi. I'm ready to sell it for just 4 million dollars. Any takers ?

    Naw. I'll just buy my own parrot for $500 (white box) and bootstrap it.

    Man, if I was a retailer I would really think twice about stocking RedHat on my shelves. First it's not selling as fast as the other (OK Win isn't selling either but 98 is still a current release...

    OK. Don't you think a huge company like CompUSA has a remediation contract with RedHat that says "if it doesn't sell then you take it back when you release a new version" sort of like the way bookstores send back the covers of book that don't sell for credit? Someone correct me, but I an evil hellhole like CompUSA doesn't get so big with stupid business practices. I fear that RedHat will drive the penguin out of the retail market faster than any MS generated FUD could

    Please remove all Linux and Linux-related products from your machine. GNU/Linux is not about the market. It is about being better and free. The market shit will take care of itself. I will always have Linux.
