At the risk of sounding like a denier, I'm not going to freak out just yet, since it says in the article (and partially in the summary) that this is believed to happen every 150 years or so, last time being 1889.
Aggree! There's a reason why Greenland is called Greenland from the "old days" instead of Big White MTF Ice Cube.
Or : We're all gonna die.. Hmm.. I could do with a vacation..
Btw. : In the Bible it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. They called it a "disaster". In Denmark we call it Summer. Pussies!
These two things are not related. Flickr is a private company and allowed to do more or less what they want. We are private people and allowed to go ballistic about more or less what we want. When Flickr turns out to be supporting torturers then we will go ballistic.
A private company offers a service. Users use it. The users then starts using the service for a political agenda. The company removes the content referring to their TOS. I really cannot see the right of the users to complain.
I think there's a huge difference between sharing pictures and uploading pictures with a political content.
Further more, I just took a look at the TOS for Flickr and found the following interesting things :
8.1.a : Infringement of law including privacy : Depicting the various police officers with name and picture is a direct violation of their privacy. Also, some places it is illegal to photograph police officers.
8.1.b Invasive of privacy : Again, depicting police officers on the internet.
14.1 Lets Flickr change the service without any warning.
15.2 Lets Flickr kick you out without warning due to TOS violation or request by e.g. law enforcement.
20.1 Flickr is NOT responsible for your data.
So, by aggreeing to these terms, the user aggree to : If you violate the law or a law enforcement unit requests it Flickr can in worst case close your account and you can do diddley or take it to a court in Ireland. However, Flickr is NOT responisble for your data.
What is MORALLY or ETHICALLY correct to do isn't always the correct thing to do business wise.
Who is to judge when a private company with its own TOS has to do something OTHERS claim to be ethical / moral correct? If someone was to come up to me a claim that I had to do something because it was the "right thing to do" when I didn't want to I would get really pissed of and kick the person out.
Before going ballistic, please read the entire post.
Flickr is a private company. Thus, they are entitled to have their own TOS providing it does not violate the law.
If one of these terms are "You are only allowed to upload your own material, i.e. material created by you or which you solely hold the copyright for." so be it. The fact that the employers in our cases have been a little more "elastic" in enforcing this does not make the posting of someoneelse's material any less a violation of TOS. The same as other people getting off with a warning for speeding does not make your über speeding any less a violation of the trafic laws.
There is a HUGE difference between the possible consequence of allowing a post of some guys picture he took of a moose and that of people getting tortured. I can easily understand why Flickr employees decided to use the TOS to get them offline from Flickr. In Denmark a cartoonist drew Muhammed with a bomb in his turban, the got published in a newspaper ( and reprinted ) and behold - later 3 muslim jerks planned to shoot all the journalists at the newspaper. The cartoonist was attacked by a muslim with an axe. In my opinion, it was just a stupid drawing - in theirs it was BLASFEMY!
Let's say : I create an online service ( funded by adds ) in which ANYONE can upload ANYTHING. Soon, the Nazis upload their stuff, Pedophile upload their picture of "gang bang night at the Kindergarten" as well as the "normal" pictures. What should I do? If my TOS state that anything can be uploaded shouldn't I permit them to upload their data? Or should I be the judge, jury and executioner and delete any piece of info I didn't like? And then, who's to say that my opinion was the right one?
We can also turn the table : Would you be as aggrivated if : The Egyptian Police themselves uploaded pictures of them torturing people ( as a kind of momentum / brag ) and had those pictures removed? Or the Somali war lords started slaughtering people, called it a "revolution" and uploaded the pictures which were then removed?
I think it's interesting to note that people react very aggressively when then are told that all sites, private companies etc. do not wish to provide storage for any "revolution" everywhere in the world? I have no interest in what's happening in Egypt and I am not affilliated with Flickr in any way. But I don't think that even though something is "ethical" or "the right thing to do" releases any user from the TOS. It is up to the private company to decide when to use the TOS and when not to.
It is not so that the pictures have been withheld from the internet - a private company have only decided to uphold the TOS.
I must admit that I ( in the beginning of Wikileaks ) was chearing for Wikileaks. The idea of a place for whistleblowers to blow the whistle on companies doing bad things ( like BP etc. ) was nice.
Then, documents regarding the war in Iraq and Afghanistan started turning up. Being a former military contractor I saw security issues in those. I supported blowing the whistle on masacres etc. but not on things putting military personnel at risk.
THEN, the cables came. There's no point in telling what goes on behind closed doors - e.g. diplomats saying that Sarcozy is a twat ( he is ). EXCEPT, if your agenda is to destabilize the world and destroy international diplomacy. Maybe even a New World Order lead by Assange himself? Don't believe that guy ever had any noble intentions.
IF the guy has indeed raped 2 women he should be procecuted. If not he should be cleared in a court of law. So, extradite him to Sweden and let him stand trial.
In my point of view, the guy is not a Messiah but an anarchist / a terrorist wearing a suit and hiding behind a computer. He needs to stand trial to face the crimes he MIGHT have committed. If he's innocent he has nothing to fear. Or is it a conspiracy against him?
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering and did quite a few projects on Xilinx FPGAs the last couple of which I did in VHDL. Love the language. Easy understandable and using the Xilinx Developer Software ( incl. Schematic tools ) development was a breeze.:-D Also did VHDL in the industry.
Here in Denmark you sign an agreement handing over all rights to your employer ( normally added in your contract ). Thus, you have no rights and can claim no right of the software, documentation or parts hereof.
Therefore, my advice would be to get legal assistance if you cannot get the clear definition from your employer.
I must admit ( eventhough I like using Linux ) that my encounter with the local Linux User ( SSLUG.dk )was about the same as your encounter with the Linux community.
I visited a lecture on Linux at Niels Bohr Institutet in Copenhagen in order to get to learn Linux. When this guy talked about System Administration I asked a simple question regarding the GUI tool he was showing: "Is it possible to filter out / remove older events from the log using that tool?" Damn! A barrage of "use fucking 'tail'" from him and the surounding nerds later I decided: "Fuck SSLUG". So when I got home I sat down and wrote an entry on their forum describing the experience and claimed that if they wanted to bring Linux to everyone they had to be a little bit more friendly with the newbies. Replying to the responses I even got censored! "Freedom to choose" and "Freedom of speech" SUCKS!
Now, I still use XP on my desktop ( servers are running Linux ( SuSe off course ) ) and when I upgrade my PC it's gonna get another XP - no Vista nor Linux.
I work as an IT consultant in Denmark. Here I come accross a lot of code from other companies, customers and even collegues. And by the Gods of the Computer Chips: Code SUCK!!!!
No error / exception handling. No data validation. And NO FUCKING COMMENTS!
A collegue even removed the Mutexes in a multithread application because : "Data sync takes up too much time.." - result that a very unstable server application.
Just had a "attitude correcting" talk with my boss. It seems I take my job and quality too serious and therefore make my collegues look bad. I was then ordered to "Don't give a shit" about the job and the quality.. QUE?
Before joining this company I have written server software which runs 24/7 ( and has done so since 2000 without breakdowns ). Even on Emb. platforms. And now some idiot tells me that I produce too good quality?
1. If I want a product I will look for it myself. 2. Adds are a waste of disk space and bandwidth. 3. I ignore adds. 4. If an add is particular annoying I will certainly NOT buy the product or anything from that company. 5. Many adds treat you like a fool or a child (most often being the same thing).
Same reasons why I have blocked paper adds in my mail box, Don't watch TV adds and threaten call centers.
This issue has been active in Denmark for quite a while now. Anyone must give the following information to a Police Officer (who also has to identify himself/herself (?!?!) with an ID): Name, CPR (Civilian Personnel Register - like a Social Security Number) and Address. Failing to comply will result in immidiate arrest.
The new knife-law here also extends the Police's possibilities of searching people not being charged with anything...
In my country, Denmark, we have quite a few problems with immigrants from the Middle East area. Being a slim guy I have had 4 attempts of mugging none of them really worked. Here's my recipy:
1. If you can the shaved your head (works fine - I have a large dent which looks like an axe blow which scares most people) and thereby looking agressive. 2. Look at people as if you wanted to rip out their liver but dont get direct eye contact (sets the muggers off). People will then stay away from you. 3. Get a rucksack (preferbly Army / Khaki) and put all of the things in it. 4. Put the cell phone on silence and vibrate. 5. Attempt to look like something which YOU wouldn't want to meet in a black alley at night. 6. If being mugged attempt to seem like a psycho and attacking the assailant.
If all of the above doesn't work here are 2 final ones:
7. Learn Martial Arts (like Wing Tsun - not pretty but highly efficient) - I broke an arm, a jaw and crushed the nose of a guy attacking me with a knife. 8. RUN LIKE HELL!!!
Or maybe us geeks should start mugging the muggers instead...
The real reason the British were able to break the Enigma codes was that Polish underground agent had stolen an Enigma. Every day the German Weather forecast had the same first line which gave them the exact settings for the machine... Don't over estimate the British... Hey, they invented the concentration camps during WW I.... The Germans "only" took it one step further...
Anyway, there are a number of ways to go around your problem... The problem is that you need 4 things to decipher the code:
1. Message Format (has the message been split into multiple parts and rearranged?)... 2. Used algorithm (DES etc.). 3. Key length. 4. The language of the message.
If these are not known you have the following option: Aquire a number of PC's and either code breaking software (if you can get hold of it) or write it your self. Using these machines set each of them to try breaking the message using different algorithms. The best software doing this have access to a number of dictionaries inorder to check whether it is on the wrong track. This will take some time regarding on the machines... Have fun!
You're Right! I myself have been in the situation where a guy had found the "perfect" chip (low power - low cost) but unfortunately it required a huge number of externals an we ended up using 4 times the current of the specs.
Why don't a number of us get together then and develope our own desktop version of the Crusoe? I have been thinking about doing a desktop for a long time the only thing holding me back is that I have decided whether to use the Elan (intel), GX1 (National) or the Crusoe. Hi
I had a brief ( 3-4 years ) where I left the IT business and worked as an independent security contractor.
Now, I'm back in the IT business..
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering and did quite a few projects on Xilinx FPGAs the last couple of which I did in VHDL. Love the language. In Denmark : Multimedia taxation.
If you own one or more of the following you are to pay up :
1. 3G Phone
2. PC with TV card
3. TV
4. Internet connection >= 256 kb/s
