Thanks for the JPG - I was just about to post something witty about a pink, Hello Kitty AR-15 assualt rifle option, but, I see I'm too late to market.

    Thank you.

  7. I like it on Review Of Netflix DVD Rental Service · · Score: 1
    here's why...

    • With 3 kids, I get to keep a rolling queue of movies coming. The DVDs with super bonus stuff get played with a lot. I can also expose them to older DVDs from their huge selection. I recently got some Marx Bros. and Abbott & Costello things I have NEVER seen for rent at my local shop, on DVD anyway.
    • This Saturday, the disney Atlantis was delivered in the mail. I stopped in at a video store while doing some other errands and noticed all 3 dozen of their DVD copies were out (All their VHS copies 2-3 dozen, were still avail). So, those who argue they can't get to see what they want quick enough or complain they have to wait a long time for new releases - well yeah, you do for the popular stuff don'tcha.
    • You can add upcoming releases to your queue, maybe helping your chances of seeing a new release a bit quicker.
    • Great, terrifically deep selection of DVD - Lots of old stuff too. TV shows, etc. all the star trek, twight zone, space 1999 episodes.
    • My wife got me a 4 month Gift certificate to start out with so my 1st few months are only $13.95. They have a 12 month GC for about $14/mo.
    • In the 1st month, I got 11 DVDs delivered. That's less than $2 ea. and no late fees. My local store charges $4 for new releases for 1 night.
I live in Maine - you can't get any further away folks - and it usu. takes 4 days from when they ship till it shows up in my mailbox.

Lately I've been perusing review services such as IMDB.com and metacritic.com for their highly rated stuff and going to Netflix to put in for things I've missed. You can't easily do that kind of research in a store.

I'll still get some in town locally from time to time, but I haven't too much since Christmas.

I'm very satisfied with their service so far. They also have upgrade options - you can go for up to 8 discs out at a time for $39.95. I'm sorely tempted but don't want to watch DVDs every single night yet! If you have kids, would normally rent 6-10 discs a month, and are interested in seeing recent and old stuff you haven't seen before and not so hot on catching all the new releases right when they come out, they're defintely worth a try.

Plus, I like getting stuff in the mail!

I am not a film student and I don't strive to seem film literate.

The thing that draws me to the movies of his I've seen are his camera shots and use of sound. I think he is a master at creating a mood with film.

I have distinct memories - having not watched it in over a year - of the hum of the machinery while Poole is jogging, Dave's breathing while in Pod 3 & climbing into HAL's memory bank area, the scrape of his chair on the floor when picking up the spoon when he is in the stargate place. I can hear those sounds still.

I remember the chill up my spine when he turns around and sees himself. The arrangement of the scene on the earth space station with the Russian visitors, the long pause when Dr. Floyd hesitates before answering questions about the moon activity.

And I have distinct, vivid memories of scenes from his other films - the creep I got when he quickly cuts from Danny to the twin girls in the hall of The Shining, Danny (?) saying "redrum, redrum", Buck Turdgiton whacking himself on the gut.

In short, the movies I've seen of his are m-e-m-o-r-a-b-l-e, and, I like them. I like watching a good movie, but don't remember distinct viusal (let alone audio) aspects of a film very often. There also are very few films where I can name the directors. Kubrick's stick with me. I look forward to seeing others from his catalog.

BTW ... I have been holding off on ordering a DVD of this film since I heard late last year of a forthcoming special edition. The 2001 Internet Resource Archive announced April 3 pre-ordering information (June release, their links to Amazon).

I've been using NiMH in my Palm Pilot Pro (w2mb IR upg) for almost a year now. You'll need Hackmaster (sounds dangerous but Palm links to it in their shareware area) and a battery hack (I use Battery Meter v1.2) so that the Palm knows the correct voltage drain for the type of battery being used.

On one hand, it is very nice not to have to buy and trash AAA's. But OTOH, they do drain - or report needing to be changed anyway - much faster than Alkalines. I average about a week and rotate among 4 NiMH's I have. I like not throwing away the alkalines, and I save money too not having to buy them each month. I paid about $20 for 4 AAA's and a charger.

I also have a digital camera (Oly D340l) where I use NiMH as well and as you pointed out, the performance of NiMH vis-a-vis Alkaline is 3-5 times better with the NiMH's.

With that experience, I expected to see decent NiMH performance with the Palm, but guess that is not to be. If anyone can explain why NiMH outperform Alk. in a DigiCam, but the situation is reveresed in a Palm, I'd appreciate it.
