Not that the Chinese government isn't the ultimate example of this kind of thinking in the 21st century, but this kind of hogwash and claptrap has been the bread and butter for statist pigs for millenia. Anytime someone tells you they have the answer to what is just and moral, and all it takes is you giving up your free will to conform to it to make the world a better place, well, they can just go fuck themselves.

    The problem with doing away with auditoriums (auditoria?) full of lawyers is, now you have to hunt them down individually rather than just tossing a few grenades. Much more time consuming.

    It is almost is, though. The hitch is that the output of those machines is greater than the former workers. So you end up employing almost the same number of employees, but doubling or tripling your productivity. Sucks for the handful of people who are now out of a job, but it's better for everyone else (remaining workers who make more, stockholders who get more return on their investment, and customers who get higher quality products for less money).

    I know Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr. have had these for years. I'm surprised that more fast food (and even quik server) restaurants haven't done this, it seems like an obvious way to reduce overhead and reduce the chance of theft (you can't stick up a terminal, especially if it only takes plastic).

    Well, guess what? The people we're talking about are already in a warzone. So either they'll figure out to fight and win, or they'll die. Giving them weapons will only help with the first part of that equation.

    Not only do you live in a "more kinder" world than tombeard or I, but you're ignoring the fact that the Libyans are living through a civil war with lots of mercenaries on the other side. To deny those folks weapons out of some idiotic sense of "oh, let's just hug it out and be friends" or some other hippie bullshit is just, well, idiotic.

    Those people are fighting for their lives, and you're worried about how they'll feel in 10 years? Get a clue!

    Do you really think an AK-47 is that hard to figure out? There's a reason that's the rifle of choice for conscript armies the world over.

    Firing a weapon isn't brain surgery, it doesn't take years of practice to do it right. Just give them the gun, tell them where to point the end the bullets come out of and how to put more in, then let 'em go.

    Not only that, it'll kill CD sales. Why would anyone, anywhere, ever buy a CD again if they're already paying $120 per year for this? Might as well get your money's worth and download everything you can. To do otherwise would just be foolish.

    My understanding is that the cables showed the level of duplicity in certain regimes and that that contributed to the final straw that broke the camel's back. Though I've also read commentary that said it was the Fed's policy of exporting inflation that was the real tipping point, so who knows? We're much too close to the action, historically speaking, to have enough perspective on the whys and wherefors.

    Stealing classified documents and leaking them isn't necessarily treason. And unless the prosecution can show what enemies were specifically aided by the release, I can't see that charge sticking, even in a military court.

    That said, I don't expect the revolutions in the Middle East that started from all of this to play much role, if any. The ends do not justify the means, and it's unlikely than Manning knew his actions would lead to democratic revolutions in other countries. It also remains to be seen whether or not those revolution serve to help or hinder the United States.

    Never trust Wikipedia. You can absolutely kill zombies either with kill -9, or rm -rf on the process tree for that process (e.g., for pid 666, "rm -rf /proc/666").
