Well, I have both. Dial-up at home & dsl at my office. I'm patiently waiting for dsl service at my house though. I have two phonelines at home so I don't tie up the normal phone line & guess what? It will cost less for me to have one phoneline & dsl than to have two phone lines!
That aside, I have two points to make... One, people will miss their broadband connections with the next wave of microsoft bourne email virus's and Two, you haven't lived until you've used links or lynx with broadband for surfing! Let's face it. Most people just surf & send mail.
All this needless effort can be avoided. On the author/maintainer side a client app should be able to update these product directories, check for diffs in listings, and save the author/maintainers a lot of work and track the history of the product changes. If a directory itself disappears the data is NOT lost. Just upload it all to the next one. And the next one. And the next one. The directory people can now go about promoting their site (and your products).
The problem with sites like this one are the amount of work created for everyone, code authors/project maintainers & the directory people. And thus they die or burnout. And now all the work is lost?? The site is now just a press release. It's a shame.
One side benefit, to the people you are trying to reach with your products, is that you can disseminate your product info to as many directories/sites with no more effort than updating once and letting the client-app do all the work of updating those sites you choose to list your product at.
SourceForge is actually run on code called Alexandria which is under the GPL.
There are currently many users of this code outside of the SourceForge staff & probably more than a few who contribute back to code.
In light of (somewhat) competing products... how does one go about submitting patches to the GPL'd product??? Should a submitter license their patch under the GPL??
Word is that WinXP will rewrite the MBR (Mater Boot Record) eachtime it is booted into. That means byebye Linux partition for those who dualboot! This might make a great defense.
But will you go to jail if you use one as a circumvention device???
I emailed the adobe marketing execs throught the boycottadobe website. They were conveniently "out of the office" until July 30th. What a laugh. I would be too.
We've released an updated XML doc (July 23, 4pm Atl. time) which should correct any validation problems. Thanks to everyone who emailed us to let us know how to actually fix those damn "&"s.
We contact products to do their own listing first, if they don't want to do it themselves they can ask us to do it. Of course we prefer that the maintainer for the product take ownership of their own listing since it will likely be kept up to date & in full.
It is really a product's admin to be truthful. However; our Social Contract outlines that while it is their responsibility (we can't test them all) the interest of the directory are primary. If it sucks & there is no way its stable, write to the admin & tell him so.
Ultimately the info is open for catching bugs like this one. If it is a bug it will get weeded out.
The "unified project-listing tool" refered too above is at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/trovesendtwo/
The idea is: you put the information for your product in a client & it updates SF/FM and or OSD at the same time without having to login & change all those listings. This is possible because, all these sites anyway, are based on loosely the same interface, data & category map.
And yes, we could use some assistance with it!
Our target audience will be those who are new to open-source. The audience now is the developers...to get them to come list their products.
We feel our focus is much different than FM. The directory is just the first step.
Spelling mistakes?? We could have polished it up a bit more, but felt it important just to get the infrastructure up & running then go. We'll be fixing stuff like that now.
Hi everyone. I urge anyone to view our site explanation about "why we aren't....SourceForge & Freshmeat."
We've been extremely careful to make sure we didn't fork something. Everyone, especially at SF, has been very helpful and supportive of OpenSourceDirectory.org

Here is the actual link to currently approved OSI licenses: http://opensource.org/licenses/index.html
Spoken like a true Anonymous Coward.
Warning: shameless plug, but very helpful.
We're working on it: http://sf.net/projects/trovesendtwo/ And we could use some help if you're JAPH...

If you need the words to tell them what you're feeling, cut 'n paste these two articles with your "Damn straight" comments afterward.
Articles: one, two.
Doh. I mean so-long to your bootloader.

Microsoft is an economic entity & must be fought that way.
Help us create demand for open-source'd products.
If markets demand open-source than companies must comply.

For some reason I just want Linux to be seen as a mean son of a bitch, a vicious dog, a cowboy, one mean mother- that's tough as nails.
Like linux & open-source needed more PR to make us look like a bunch of flakes.
2. The irc logs have done a pretty good job. A better faq will come out to answer emails & posts we're been answering personally.
3. That's not a windows bash per se. But many coming over from closed software pretty much leave windows. Fair Comment.
