I think a more informative statistics are something like 'infant deaths per million' or 'death by starvation per million' or something like that than pure economic statistics.
Quite simply, a large number of people are poor because they are stuck in the low income trap inherited over several generations. Something to be able to break away from this situation : a good educational system, a good medical system, a good social-security system. what do the republicans do : strip away these systems to their bare minimum... and LESS.
