  2. Management triumphs over Engineering, again. on NASA's Foam Test Offers Lesson in Kinetic Energy · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's looking more and more like there was a management decision to accept foam impacts despite the engineers of the shuttle specifying that nothing should impact the shuttle.

Previous reports indicated NASA management argued that the impacts were OK since nothing bad happend from past impacts, and because it was "just foam". Some of the same articles stated that the engineering design docs stated no impacts were acceptable.

The challenger disaster was for sure due to managers deciding to launch against the strong advice of the engineers not to launch.

This current article's quote of the NASA Ames person (who has been in management for awhile now as someone has already pointed out) surely is suggestive of the problem. It indicates his surprise that the physics don't match his inuitive expectation. Maybe that's a root of the problem. People with some science background in a non-relevent field who move on to a management role are relying on their own intuition over that of those that are doing the actual engineering in the relevent field.

For sure if they were going to accept the impacts then they had a responsibility to put the resources into experts carefully analyzing what the outcome would be for all the possible impact area's and times. That would allow a scientifically informed decision.

Instead there was an intuitivly informed decision.

I'm all for growing meat in vats instead of having to grow a whole beast and then processing it, but it seems there is a big problem with this particular method: It requires a bit vat o growth medium that is itself not so easy to supply.

The NewScientist article states "..immersed them in a vat of fetal bovine serum, a nutrient-rich liquid extracted from the blood of unborn calves"

Certainly an easier to obtain growth medium is needed for general use in growing food.

For NASA's low volume needs it's OK to rely on big vats of this stuff.

I've seen ads for this stuff in various biotech rags, and I do know that it is used in bioreactors for growing up batches of genetically modifed microbes, but I doubt we'll be able to cheaply grow meat at home as needed with technique.

Eventually we will all be doing it that way as it is theoretically cheaper and can provide a consistently high quality meat. Only thowbacks and meat snobs will insist on meat from whole animals!

Amazing! Last year I signed up, reluctantly, with Flashcom after waiting and waiting for Cable Modem service to be available. I was really bummed when, the next week I found on my doorknob an announcement that Cable Modem service was now available in my area, but DAMN, I had just singed a TWO YEAR service agreement with Flashcom...I was feeling like a big dope! Well, lo and behold, at the start of this year Northpoint and Flashcom parted ways, and I was steered towards telocity to service my DSL line. At that point I was way happy...I had a way out of that stupid two year DSL contract. A few days later an AT&T rep came to our door trying to sign us up for Cable Modem and Digital Phone service, which I pomptly did. The Cable Service was installed one day before my DSL service was disconnected...and has work fine almost all of the time since. I'm seeing downoad speeds of up to 300 K Byte/s, but usually about 150 KB, and the install and tech support is way way better that what Northpoint provided. Imagine my amusment to have read last friday that Northpoint went belly-up, leaving telocity customers out of luck. That's one major ream job i've been fortunate to have avoided! Ah, but I am somewhat agahst at AT&T for so blatently buying and dismantel Northpoint so it could steer people to it's Cable Modem service instead. I'm kind of uncormfortable giving them my money now, but oh that cable modem is fast. And to top it all off, a few days ago I got an ad in the mail for Sprint''s Fixed Wireless Broadband service, but it's not as good a deal as the Cable Modem...no multi year service agreement, and AT&T offered the 1st 2 months for free.

I worked at Applied Biosystems from 1990-1999, and I worked with Tor on the 3700. I agree with Tor's description of Mike Hunkapillar. I too was very impressed with the corporate style that Mike supports. I was always impressed with the fact that his 'office' was the same as everyone else, although maybe a few sq. ft. bigger. Mike does eat in the company cafeteria same as everyone else, and always demonstrated respect for other employees. BTW, I hear from those that worked with Mike in the early years of AB that Mike is an avid trekkie. As to the agressive business practices. I expect there is some truth to them, especially for the 3700, which was behind schedule and facing the prospect of being upstaged by the MegaBace machine. Probably FUD played a role in their marketing plans. In addition, the creation of Celera looked to me somewhat like a marketing play to upstage the MegaBace. PE Bio gave Celera a lot of money which went back to them in terms of a huge pre-order for the 3700, at a time when the MegaBace looked to be coming out first. I could go on, but alas I should get some work done for my current employer...a spinoff of Applied Biosystems. I would definetly work at Applied Bio again, if only they offered a competative stock option plan.
