I say LCD is the best bang-for-your-buck, and everyone in our TV department agrees
Do any of the LCD tv's that have a great bang for the buck happen to include a digital tuner built in? Last time I looked there were lots of digital ready monitors, but no TV's other than NTSC analog. I'm looking for one that's not obsolete in 2 years without another purchase of a seprate tuner. 15-23 inch size would be nice. It shouldn't attempt to empty my nest egg. Price is important also. Price is a great killer of the bang for the buck everyone is looking for.
Unfortunately up until this point the plasmas have been slightly more in my price range for the size I am looking for.
The home theatre market is limited because of the space required and the high price tag. They are a relatively low volume product with lots of contenders for the limited consumers. You hinted you are considering a TV, but due to price you are holding off. Join the ranks.
The real void is TV's for the den, dorm, apartment, RV, kitchen, etc. Considering that analog is supposed to be gone in the US soon, the selection of 25 inch and under digital TV's (tuner included) is almost completely barren. Maybe, just maybe, they are gearing up for this volume market.
The Internet replaces my TV, not over the air broadcast.
Maybe they are going to finaly target the replacement market for all those under $200 NTSC tv's out there. It's a big market and nobody is filling the void. In that price and size range about the only thing on the market is some monitors missing the tuner or only includes an analog tuner , or NTSC TV's. There just are not many if any under 25 inch and under $300 complete digital TV's out there. I'm still waiting....
In the meantime, the PC and Internet fills the void.
If you know of an under $300 and under 25 inch TV (including the digital tuner built-in), please reply. CRT or LCD is OK. I quit looking last summer. The search was a waste of time.
LightScribe is actually an Hewelett Packard product [lightscribe.com], so the chances of this technology actually being licensed and incorporated in regular disk drives and media is pretty good.
Wearing my pessimist's hat, methinks the blank CD's will be priced like their color ink cartridges. Priced a full HP 78 cart lately?
Don't expect to get a spindle of 100 blanks for $20 anytime soon.
This also doesn't take into account Hollywood's DVD sales which are quite impressive.
Don't forget the price for Halo II was much more than any DVD I've purchased ever. MS could sell 1/6th the number of units and still claim top positon in $$$$. The last 3 movies I bought were all under $10.
It was also interesting that no lawyers were present for the trial.
You forgot the word Defense.
Since the defence didn't show up, there was a default judgement. It's the same as not showing up to fight a traffic ticket. Only in this case the fine was $10. They just managed to rack up a whole slew of violations at $10 each then not show up to defend themselves.
What's going to happen with a system like this is that it breaks on all music CD players that are capable of identifying other formats.
Well... Just say it... In dash CD MP3 players and portable CD MP3 players. They both play CDDA redbook and read CDR's filesystems to find the MP3's.
You described the players without mentioning them. I just had to mention the incompatible players. To me, it just means another format that is incompatible with my players. At home Winamp is my primary background music player. Doing the disk shuffle every 35-65 minutes is not an option. This DRM is incompatible with Winamp.
I use MP3 CDR's instead of a CD changer. Most CD changers will hold only 6 CD's. A single CDR of MP3's typicaly holds twice that many.
To prevent theft, loss or damage in the hostile auto environment, I leave the expensive originals at home and just play the copies on the road. Loss of the shiny plastic disk does not mean loss of the Lisence to play the music that comes with the original. A copy is cheap insurance to protect your right to listen to the music you paid for.
I've yet found a record store anywhere willing to replace my 10 year old recordings that have a few scratches for just the cost of the replacement media. I don't need to repurchase the license. I have a copy already.
Indeed. If you think music should be free, create some free music. Ditto movies, etc.
Don't forget to suport those who provide..
When buying hardware, if I have a choice, Enttec and Artistic Licence get first choice in lighting products. They also get my free word of mouth promotion. The retationship Light Factory has with Enttec also puts their status in the good group even though their product isn't free, but they are supporting the open Enttec interface. That's worth points and a good mention.
If you are involved in theatrical lighting or nightclub lighting, look these good guys up.
Disclamer. I don't work for them but found them while doing research for doing some lighting on a budget. I am buying the Enttec interface which will be my first piece of DMX512 hardware.
America likes to make that every single song, movie or piece of software would have been legally purchased if they had not been illegally downloaded
I've taken another route that the **AA and BSA can do absolutely nothing about. I simply look for Creative Commons, open source and free software. I'm getting started in Lighting. I am following the open DMX project and it's associated free software. I started looking to free software after getting hooked on Mozilla Firefox and Open Office.
It's true that not everyting is free, but supporting free helps it grow where piracy helps nobody but the pirate. On the Open USB to DMX project, they are offering the completed manufactured device for less than I can build it myself. They provide schematics and the software code for free. I'm ordering several because the device has lots of 3rd party support both commercial and free. Even advanced computer lighting consoles with a large inventory of moving head lights is supported.
The movement is catching on. There were several (still are) propirtory methods to send DMX (lighting control signals) over Ethernet. Most were quite expensive. A wireless link to send DMX over Ethernet wirelessly by one manufacture is about $7000.
Artistic Licence opened up their DMX over Ethernet protocol to the public domain. It's called ArtNet. Now to do the same type wireless control, all you need is a couple off the shelf D-Link wireless access points. Artistic Licence even provides a how to in there FAQ's. Needless to say, Artnet is now becomming the defacto DMX over Ethernet solution.
The open USBDMX dongle is becomming the defacto winner in the USB to DMX hardware department with the most 3rd party support. Enttec was first to market and now have backlog of orders, even though they provide the schematic and software for free.
Info in open USB to DMX is here; http://www.enttec.com/dmxusb.php
There is nothing Martin or other manufactures can do about it. It's not piracy. The best thing they can do is get on board. Light Factory is selling their software and even sell the Enttec interface. Enttec makes the dongle and is a distributor for LightFactory. They have a great Christmas special on right now. Enttec does not try to lock you into anybody's software. I can use Freestyler, DMX Control, Mandolator, Simple 16, or other software instead. LightFactory does not lock you into the Enttec interface. You have a choice among many DMX adaptors. You can even output ArtNet directly from you PC using your existing Ethernet card if you wish and use one of many ArtNet to DMX boxes out there at the other end of your LAN. Even doing a Wireless link is no longer expensive.

The days of buying an adaptor and being locked into that manufactures software or the other way around with hardware is over. Some manufactures with a buggy whip business model will soon feel the pressure of market forces.
In summary.. Don't do the piracy thing. Go open. Support artists that provide legal free open downloads. Don't pirate the rest of their album. It's legal and good for everyone except the buggy whip manufactures.
I never said it was, just not a good solution. I did say there will be predicable racist anti-everyone-who-is-not-white anglo-saxon-prodestant ramblings on this thread because it's about China.
It's not about race. It's about an effective filter. I have Chinese friends. I've been to the Chinese New Year celebrations. I don't have Chinese as a second or third language. I don't have anybody I currently know that is on a trip to china. I have no China business connections. 100% of e-mail I get from China is of no use to me. Killing 100% of the unsolicited mail from China has a 0% false positive rate.

"Look, it works fine. Now we can do this to all new PCs"
No they can't. One thing I always tell people when shopping for a computer is "Find the software you need to run and then get the hardware that will run it."
If you need to run Linux as a router network traffic analisis box and this new PC won't run it, you won't buy it. You will find something that will.
You might get one for your mom's e-mail, but there are many things it simply is unable to do. It's the same reason you don't use your cable TV box to send e-mail. It won't run your e-mail application. This Internet box is the same thing as a subscription box, but for basic Internet.
By making it hard to remove and voiding the warranty by opening it up, this thing is not meant to last for more than a couple of years for the regular Joe.
The Yamaha DX7 came out in 1983. It has a Lithium backup battery. I've never changed mine. One of the features of the keyboard is battery test. I've never had any reason to consider changing the battery since I've owned it.
