  1. Go may be a better Language. But Google has a history of dropping technologies.

Go is widely used outside Google both by individuals and enterprises. Go is entirely open source.

  2. How is a Wine app on a GTK+ system any less "native" than a Qt app on a GTK+ system?

Got to correct you there, you're a bit unclear on how these stack. Qt apps never link to GTK+ libraries. Both Qt and GTK+ sit on top of a window manager, to which they link, in addition to many other low level libraries such as Xlib.

  3. Hopefully this doesn't give companies an excuse to ignore native Linux development.

The opposite actually. It gives game developers confidence that the Linux game market is real and here to stay. And that it is likely to undergo rapid expansion. Obviously, we prefer native ports.

  4. There's some things that Javascript does better than anything else. Like asynchronous IO

Really? You need to read this. Average 1 microsecond per request. Let's see you do that in Node. (And this is supposed to be Node's strongest point, I just don't buy it.)

  5. Well, okay, depending upon which idiots we're talking about. In reading Madison's Notes it's important to keep in mind that the "minority" whom the founders spoke of protecting was their own class, the moneyed elite. Which made everyone else the idiots.

+1. So worth reading all of Madison's notes, I am in awe of this historical record, but sadly have looked at only a fraction of it so far. Personally, I don't feel in a position to make a judgment about where the balance between self interest and desire to carve out a position in history as having laid the foundation of thousand year republic lies. My sense is, in those days people cared a lot more about how history would judge them, thus the primary motivation was to establish a stable democratic system. And they did a damn good job obviously, but failed to prepare sufficiently for the demented cocktail of domestic kleptocracy, gullibility and foreign adventurism that put Trump in power. Of course the framers do not bear the entire blame for that, far from it.

  6. Next up, we must eliminated the electoral college, which is a remnant of the founders' deep-seated fear of democracy.

Actually it was more a fear of idiocracy, but unfortunately the result achieved was exactly the opposite of intentions. Another big thing that needs to be eliminated, the blatant gerrymanders and the gerrymander machine. And another one, unlimited campaign contributions including corporate contributions. Behold the fruit of labor of evil republican hands.

  7. I wonder how much of this is driven by a lack of vision, and simple inertia.

How about idiocracy? The same effects make PHP popular, and keeps Perl around long past its expiry date. Not to mention Visual Basic, thankfully nearly dead now, but after causing how much damage?

  8. Only computer illiterate retards use Javascript.

On server side, you mean. Choosing Javascript on server side really should be a firing offense when superior alternatives such as Go are available. Client side is an entirely different story, seeing as there is no alternative. But that doesn't make it right.

While I'm in here: when the hell is Javascript going to get real integers? The fact that this has been treated as zero priority by the standards group shows you what level of talent goes into the Javascript ecosystem.

  9. Freesync is better than NVidia's proprietary crap too.

Right, freesync monitors are widely available at good prices, that's a big deal.

NVIDIA hobbles non-32 bit floating point support on their gaming cards so there's incentive to buy their workstation cards.

That might be part of it, but it also seems to have something to do with how many FP ops can be retired per cycle at different precisions. It's easy to see how that works for half precision (leave out the circuitry necessary to turn one 32 FP unit into two 16 bit FP units, but they also suck at 64 bit precision, this is the bit I don't fully get.

The Apple thing is, fucking up the charge control logic in the device so that batteries die sooner than they should, or even explode as we have seen on multiple occasions. If you are ok with increasing the risk of burning down your house or injuring yourself, Apple is your company. Instead of fixing their defective products we just see assholes like you denying it.

  12. Why would you get a Vega 64 that is not cheap and struggles with some of the most demanding current VR titles?

Because Vega is the best GPU for Vulkan/DX12. Why would you invest in hardware optimized for obsolete 3D engines? Obviously, VR is moving heavily to Vulkan and friends, otherwise, sucks too much.

  13. So much for the "my phone takes pictures just as good as DSLR" trolls.

Mine does... but that's because I have an iPhone,

As if we needed any more evidence that Apple owners are delusional.

Oh clever little man, you posted a link that says your Apple product will just wear out if you leave it plugged in, not explode. But then, there are these exploding Apple products, which is it? Do they suck because the battery wears out when plugged in, or do they suck because they explode if left plugged in? Or both?

It would seem that A) from the news reports and B) Apple's own blogs that the answer is "both". Not like we had to ask.

Now scurry away and fix your products.

  15. FSM knows AMD isn't up to the task

You need to get some of that Vulkan. If I was into VR I would not be trying to optimize my hardware for an obsolete rendering model.

  16. Vega 64 obviously, but I don't care about VR, so far there is no killer game and the helmet is just too weird. I'll check again 5 years from now.

AMD card prices aren't exactly bargains either.

Getting there. RX 560 cards are running $130-140 now and RX 580 around $225. When 580 gets down to $200 it's definitely a bargain, and even as it is, it's hard to complain.

AMD's strategy makes sense, they are now concentrating resources on exploiting their Ryzen advantage while starting to develop their brand new Epyc server market. On the GPU side they just continue to bang out parts on the mature 14nm process which gets cheaper the longer they run it. RX 560/570/580 cards remain highly respectable products, giving AMD the luxury of either fattening their gross profit clawing back more market share. They seem to be steering a middle course, with retail prices slowly coming down and market share slowly coming up. The stage is set for a showdown at 7nm in late 2019.

Personally, AMD vs NVidia is a no brainer because:
    1) the open source AMD drivers are awesome
    2) Vulkan/DX12 are taking over, I don't care about obsolete 3D engines running a bit slower
    3) fuck NVidia.
