Well how about if there's a moron who's using the same computer that their web-site is on? Now they have no graphics or sound on their web-site.:P
Windows backgrounds, and sound files are messed up, tech-support getting calls up the yin-yang, and computers needed to be shut down across companies because of incompetent users that are bound to keep spreading it otherwise, plus the time it costs businesses to clean the virus and replace the files that were damaged/destroyed. Of course all of this could be easily avoided if a) you trained your users correctly in how to use email and b) "back-up". For a home user, backing up files isn't too big of a deal, but any company who doesn't back up their important files is just asking for trouble.
What exactly is a day in life of Jon Katz like? I've seen people ask what qualifications you have, and much about your writing style, but I am interested in what your life is like. What do you do in a typical day? Do you stir up conversation and debate in person as you do in your articles on slashdot?
I know you said only ask one question, but like anyone has yet to follow those guidelines.:P I usually don't speak up much, I just read, occasionally I'll post (ok ok, so sometimes I first post) something funny or something that I thought, but usually I just observe. One thing I have observed was the constant flame and prejudice against you Mr. Katz. I mean some people on slashdot (I'm not going to mention any names) immediatly post negative comments on an article just because it has your name on it, regardless of if it was good or not. There's always talks that you shouldn't be allowed to post stories or that your editorials suck, blah blah and hardly ever is there anything good said about you. How do you put up with it? Does it ever upset you to be treated like this? What is it that keeps you from fighting back, or from packing up your game and taking your insight elsewhere?
I don't know much about Jon Katz. I did enjoy his article about Voices from Hellmouth (which also was the first time I ever posted to slashdot) and I understood part of his point of view on the southpark movie, other than those two I didn't do any indepth reading of articles by Jon Katz. However in the comments I have seen directed towards Mr. Katz I have seen much flame, much hate, and much anger. I've seen him have to put up with things that I went through in school, people bullying and people picking on him, people putting him down and making fun of him, many times for no reason at all. Some of the people here make me not want to be called a geek because I wouldn't want to be associated with them, and I've never once even felt the slightest ashamed of being a geek until now. You're a strong man Mr. Katz.
Why do people log in and First Post rather than AC the first post? No its not to waste moderators points, I can care less what the moderators do with them. Ever since the karma thing I've had to wade through the muck anyways. I used to browse -1 but sometimes I'd browse normal with a highlight threshold of +2, now with karma many people are +2 for no reason, causing their message to slow down my download time and making me click links to hear someone do a me too.
Anywho I'm babbling here. To the point, why log in to first post? Anyone can claim to be an AC...but there is only one TheWall (or melvin, or dammitjim, Meept!, etc.). What claim to fame do you have if your name isnt on it?
Hey man, how much do musical cards cost in the store? What $3 minimum? Ok, now take that and multiply it by the number of relatives and friends that a person sends an E card to (for free), lets go with 20. At three bucks a pop, the cards in themselves are $60. Tack on the postage and the cost of an envelope and you have $7 more. ($0.32 for the stamp and $0.03 for the envelope). Now that's $67 spent plus 3 days of wait. Sending an E card that plays music and is animated (Still dont have animated paper) costs nothing, and gets there within minutes. Best of all, its FREE!!!
There is still one thing that will keep the post office in business though. Pictures. Ever try to send a picture to someone who uses AOL? (Personally I hate AOL, but millions of people out there still use it) I have, three times, it's a bitch. AOL doesn't like pictues as email attachments. The last time I finally gave up, went and got a free geoshitties account, coded the page and uploaded the pictures for my friend to see. A lot of work? Yes. Could most users figure out how to do it? No. Would a normal person just give up and mail the pictues with an actual hand written (or printer printed) letter? Yes. Does that keep the post office happy? Yep.
Plus what about shipping packages? Are you going to scan my mail order items and send them to me? My printer doesn't print large enough paper for me to wear dammit!
Just my two cents and the other three because I dont like pennys.:P
I'm going to be honest from the start. I didn't really read the article. I tried, dont get me wrong, but after I was 2 pages in I was really just bored off my ass and gave up. Maybe it's just because it's monday... I dont know, all I know is that reading license agreements is about as fun as that article was.
However, I do have thoughts on gaming. I've been around games all my life. From back in the day of Atari, up until the playstation. I haven't shelled out the money for the dreamcast yet, because I did purchase the Saturn for $300 with 2 games when it was new, and promptly sold it to some other sucker for the same price. Beofre that I bought the 32X to go with my sega, and both systems were poor ideas and died shortly after their release. The only worse game system (which i was smart enough to never buy) was the Virtual Boy.
I remember back in the day, playing games over and over again. Games like Space Invaders, Pac Man, and such classics on the Atari. I also remember Pitfall (the original), Donkey Kong (ditto), and Porkys (I think the first shower scene ever in a video game, even back in the Atari games people wanted chicks in showers). *L*
Over time I've seen games improve in all areas. I've seen graphics get better, speed improve, AI improve (anyone play the old baseball game on Atari? I think it was called baseball.:P) and motions become more realistic. I've seen RPG's no longer become a game of rolling the dice, but become worlds for us to escape in, they stopped being sprites and really became characters. FF8 seemed like a movie at times. But even though all this, one thing has been lacking....... Life!
Final Fantasy 8 (FF8), Resident Evil 1,2,and 3, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, all of these are games that played like movies, but still all of which were cartoony. I'm not talking bugs bunny and loony toons type cartoony, I'm just talking artsy drawing type cartoony.
I think that one of the improvements we're going to see in games is more video, not CGI but actual video shots in video games. It'll start out slowly with just replacing still scenes with video clips, but eventually playing a video game is really going to be like being a part of a movie. People will look like real people, not like drawn characters. People will ACT not just stand in place. People will speak rather than make you read words on the screen.
I think the start would be games similar to the Tex Murphy games on the PC (Under a Killing Moon, The Pandora Detective, and I forgot the 3rd once since I dont have a DVD to play it on.) They are all detective games, but when you talk with people you see video clips of real people answering you. Yeah it took up 4 cds, but I'd rather disk swap and have a great game than have a crappy game with some great options tossed out of it to make it fit on one. And with the incorporation of DVD and larger media such as that into console systems, well it's now possible to fit it all into one disk and have room to spare.
why wouldn't you just play it yourself? Saves on download time for people like me who can't get fast internet connection and are stuck on 56k's that work like 28.8's
What does this have to do with Star Wars TPM not being released in DVD?
I don't know what's worse... people making wild absurd comments like this, or people talking about naked, petrified, hot grits down the pants.:P It's sad what popularity does to a site.
I'm a recent graduate of highschool, though I still work at one. I personally am appalled at this idea. First of all, lets face it, students lie. Especially if there is a fear of getting in trouble. If I was given a test that is supposed to identify the "violent" students I would fear that if I was identified as one of those students I would get hassled or get in trouble, and thus I would lie on the test and present myself as someone who is always spewing daisies and roses and wouldn't hurt a fly.
If I was in a particually f*ck'em up mood I would answer the test as insanly as possible, making everyone freak out. If the question is stupid, such as "Do you play role playing games" I would answer that I live role playing games, I play them instead of sleeping at night, and that I am one with "fill in a role playing character here". If it is a question of how I would react to someone bullying me I would answer something like ripping their toes off one by one and shoving them down their throat then hanging them upside down from the flagpole by their feet and watching their blood pour down on them. Needless to say, I'd turn some heads.;)
Tests are highly inaccurate, especially when you're trying to use general questions to find non-general answers.
The second point (okay, so I've already covered more than one point so far, I never keep track of these things) is why? Will the students be forced to take this test? (If the answer is no, then I expect hardly anyone to fill out the test, why work if you dont have to?. ) Why should students be forced to fill out a test with personal information and to what good does it do the school? If I get treated differently or excluded from things based on my answers to the test then it is discrimination. If that's the case, then we really haven't made it that far in all these years. Sure we allow (politically incorrect, not meant to be offensive to anyone) blacks, asians, mexicans, etc into our schools now and we dont limit them from doing things, but instead we limit people that fail a certain personality test and treat them different. Basically as a friend of mine puts it so well "Same sh*t, different toilet).
Am I a geek? Yes, but why should that matter? I'm at school because a) I have to be and b) to learn, I'm not at school to have people try and decide if I am violent or not (a personal subject) through impersonal means.
I personally am a nice guy, I'm not violent at all, and I am not insane (been told many times I am craZy with a capital Z though), I don't do drugs, I'm not an alcoholic (dont drink), I'm not gang banger/skin head/racist/body piercer/etc. I'm the type of guy mothers wish their daughters would date, yet I would be the first to be singled out based on this test if I answered honestly, because I'm different. I like role playing games, I'm a longer, I don't like crowds, I cringe at the thought of public speaking, and I'm very emotional. I was teased and tormented in school when I went to an actual school, and I still get it now at times because I work at a school still (kids can be so cruel), but I also know the consequences of my actions, and I know the value of a human life. I was brought up with values and morals, and with real parents, not with the Telivision/Internet/etc to try and act as a parent. I was brought up being taught what is right and what is not, and also being shown by example. Things like the V-chip and filtering software just give parents one less thing they have to do with their kids, and one more thing to screw the kid up in life.
That's not to say this is always why a person does something. Face it folks, life is unpredictable. You may get it right 99.9% of the time, but there is always that one person or that one time when it is different. I liked the idea of having somewhere to call if someone threatens you or if you for some reason think someone is going to do something drastic but thats as far as we need to take it. Other than that just keep your eyes and ears open.
Enough rambling, just remember, just because I'm different doesn't mean I'm going to rip your toes off and feed them to you.;)
Sorry, had to try for the only first post I'd ever get in my life.:P There goes my karma, but at least I can brag to my friends. heh
Seriously it does figure that NSI wasn't held responsible. Why should they? They're not the ones who are doing the copyright infringement. The person who is hosting the website is, thus go after them!
Of course I know why they dont go after them. The person with the site is probably just some regular joe schmoe who doesn't have much money. NSI on the other hand is a real company with real money, so it makes sense to sue the people you have a chance on actually getting something other than the URL from.
Just tried it out, not sure if it worked or not. I got like 7 lines saying SQL Error Email Rob blah blah. But now it says I've already metamoderated today... so I guess it worked?
Seems like a good idea to me. (The whole meta moderation thing). I was surprised I didnt find any "First Post" messages on my list. heh
One thing about First Posters... if you First Post as an AC what good is that? ~ANYONE~ can say they were that AC...
How the h*ll does a comment like that get moderated up? To a 3 no less? All it said was "wow". Oh yeah, thats real informative. For all we know the AC was saying wow because they were the first post.
You're right. I went this morning (9 am PST) and the page was normal, but I went back now (2pm PST) and ALF's back. Maybe it was hacked again... or maybe my ISP is running through a proxy server and had the unhacked page cached.
Uhm, ok. Well when I viewed the story (the first 3 times) there were no comments posted. After I submitted my post it let me view the other comments posted... heh either something was screwy or somebody read my mind.
Heh...somebody had to ask. ;)

Mac's aren't completly immune, if you're running Virtual PC and you open the attachment, it's going to affect you too. :P
It's early 2000 now... does it really take that long to make a documentry?
in its day... :P

$40,000 for the new 1999 N'Sync mp3. heh That would suck.
