I'd say /. isn't obsessed, D:C is. It's like a war: D:C versus all-those-who-do-naughty-things-with-*our*-crap:ca t-as-outlined-in-our-*vague*-EULA. I'd say that most (if not all) of the people who do these "naughty" things are /.ers, so I think it involves them, especially since D:C is pointing fingers at people who have done nothing wrong. And as for EULA covering hardware... well... D:C must be on crack.

I'm quite glad to see that people outside /. are finally understanding how stupid D:C is. Articles about D:C should all be written like this. Actually, IMHO their idea has (had?) potential to be *somewhat* good, but they have screwed it up really bad.

I don't believe D:C will last much longer, all this bad PR can't be good for business :)

  8. No surprise to me! on English, The Global Internet Language? · · Score: 1

Take my country Australia (Aussie Aussie Aussie!) for example. Australia is *very* multicultural, we have Australians who have all sorts of native backgrounds, Italian, Spanish, German, Asian, African, American, you name it we have it, and in quantity. Constantly there are people migrating to Australia all the time, and even if their native language isn't english, they will still learn it, and fairly quickly. Probably not because they have to, but because they want to. Sure we all can speak in our own native languages if we really wanted to (I have an Italian background myself) but we mostly speak english.

A great majority of the world speaks or can speak english. Therefore, its only normal for the internet to have a high usage of the english language. There is a NEED to be able to comunicate on a global scale (look at what you are reading now), the english language is obviously default.

    I completely agree.

I have a Jornada 680 because I need something that is smaller than a laptop, but has a keyboard so I don't sit there slowly scribing stuff onto the screen. Best thing about it is its highly mobile (even if its larger than a Palm or an ipaq), and powerful enough to take my work on the road, not *just* for appointments and contact info. I store everything on my CF, and have everything I need while I'm away from my computer. I also carry my 7110, for a complete office on the road.

How can it be possible to have zero growth? Once we have a computer (for arguements sake a Pentium 1) we don't need another because it does everything we want it to? Even in this day and age of IT? The mind boggles.

I'm sure that many /.ers upgrade their computer on a regular basis (I'm guilty too ;) and even normal users would always like something better...

*ZERO* growth? Naa, don't think so...

I remember playing those text games, right back to when I was a kid in school playing on an Apple IIe, so adictive...

I agree with Swede2048, modern games do look very spectacular, but most are not as adictive as some of the classics, even the classic games with primative graphics (check out www.classicgaming.com) are still very enjoyable.

While Quake IS a good game, I think it's being carried a bit too far. There are lots of similar games and already several versions of Quake itself, how can you keep playing the same thing? At least in the "early days" games were more interesting and imaginitive, and genuinly hard to get bored of.

  14. Re:Unfair or Inaccurate moderation on Interesting Moderation Proposal · · Score: 1

IMHO, some topics are very opinionated, and aren't always modded properly. Perhaps there should be a system where to moderate up/down it requires more than one moderator to mod up/down, to reduce bias. For example, A particular user makes a comment, moderator wants to up it a few points, but must be seconded by another moderator. Kind of like a voting system. Another way to do it would be the higher you want to mod it up, the more "votes" it must accumulate, +1 requires one other moderator to vote for it, +2 requires two other moderator votes, and so on. This might become a cumbersome and slow system, but it will help to ensure that moderating is fair.

Also, for /. "members" who keep posting garbage and flame/troll, there should be something done to that user, i'm thinking something like the oposite of having an automatic +1 for posts. For example if a particular user is modded down a great deal (accumulate -1 points), when the user reached a predetermined minus score, all posts recieve -1 to filter the crap out. I do realise that they can just create another account, but I really can't see any solution to stop trolls from doing that. Perhaps a small membership fee would be in order, members get bonus points etc.

  19. Re:The controller on Next Generation Nintendo Revealed · · Score: 1

IMHO the N64 controller made the N64 system better, I find it really comfortable to hold, and it was designed to have various ways of holding the thing.

With the N-cube, it looks like they kept the "pistol grip" concept but removed the middle grip. It looks like a weird thing to use but then again thats what happened when the N64 came out. I'm sure Nintendo know what they are doing.

Compare it to the controller on a PS, how can you use such a square thing? Its like the early 8 bit Nintendo/Sega Master System designs!
