Currently most people remain poor because of lack of a good degree from a top school (among a bunch of other things unimportant to this question). Your online University will be giving away for free the knowledge of a good degree from a top school. Do think the Internet can play a part in leveling the field by allowing anyone who wants to receive a good education (good as in Ivy League)?
(if anyone gets what i'm saying and can phrase it better, PLEASE DO SO!)
This is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. PPPoE (some stupid ppp tunnel over eth) takes up 2-3% under linux on my 450A. That's just to push and pull 60K/s. Imagine doing what the dsl modem does in software. Are these people on crack? If so, I want some of it, it sure must be some strong ass crack.
While I agree that laptops are good, schools are good, and laptops in schools are good. There's no money for it. Why no money you ask? Well the goverment (US goverment) has plenty of money, on the order of 1.something TRILLION. It's not a money problem. It's a WASTE problem. Massive goverment waste and corruption. We had this same problem in the early 20th century. Massive reforms progressed in the form of (surprise!) progressivism. Which had goals of ending goverment corruption. Today we have the same problem, massive corruption of the system. It's not that the system can't work. It's just that it's so polluted that it can't. What we need to do first is fix this exccess waste so thouse TRILLIONS can be used for what they were ment to be used for. Helping the people who pay the taxes. We don't have goverment and taxes for goverment's sake. We have them for the sake of the people who live under them. So before we go about fixing schools with laptops (which is a great idea) we first must fix goverment so we can then fix schools and then have laptops.
The Washington Post has a very very long tradition of not including _ANY_ profanity what so ever. _ANY_ profanity. This is acutaly the only redeeming thing about this Communistic paper:/
Valid, albeit a tad extreme. However it is a valid point to say that the liberal extreme does as much harm as filtering software would do by pressing their views and propaganda upon the populous. On the other hand though, the same can be said about the right, pressing their views upon the populous. Like all arguments that happen extremes are taken, meanings are distorted, and all legitimate argument ceases. Such is life and politics.
Apparently the Goverment is trying to create a monopoly. They want to be the only ones who can listen in on converstations and use 'spy' equipment. How Neat.
Perhaps this is 'For the Children' or 'The War on Drugs'
How does this restrict a company from having an EULA like MS in that you cannot view this webpage unless you allow us to collect information on you. Like how it's in violation to run Windows if you do not agree to hold MS responisable for crashes etc.
... Or what I hope happened is that someone fudged up and just filled out a 'Standard Beta Test' form that they use there and just put 'Coral Linux' where is said . Totaly forgetting the fact that most software in Debain is under the GPL.
We now live in a society that thinks that luxuries are basic rights. This is bad. A luxury is a one because everyone does not or cannot have one. Just because a group of people has something that a 'poorer' group does not doesn't make it a right to have one.
Computers are tools; you do not have a right to own a computer. You may own a computer or you may not, that is ok, but it is not ok to say "I am poor, give me a computer because I cannot afford one for myself". An example: I currently do not own a car. It would help me a great deal to own a car, but I cannot afford one. It would also help a lot of people a great deal to own a computer. I don't have a 'right' to get a free car nor should someone have a 'right' to get a free computer.
This I believe is just another example of 'class warfare' that goes on in America.
It seems to me that companies are thinking about opensource as a way to take a product and get rid of it. They say, "here opensource people we gave you this now fix it up for us," which just isn't good. They want us to act as free labor for them, so they can then repackae the work from the community and ship it as a product. They also want to just have us support everything. They are saying, "we don't need tech support now, the opensource people will take care of that." This is something that I feel should be stoped right now, we need to really examine companies when they are thinking about going opensource to see if they are just going to attempt to use us as cheap labor, or acutaly give something to the community and contribute in a meaningfull way.
(All spelling mistakes are mine alone, and no one elses;P)
I think these web sites offering these 'bounties' shouldn't offer bounties on the actual code but instead on the programmer who's willing to write and also become a 'manager' of that code. This way the programmer could sign a contract with the company stating that he will write and also manage the code. Then the code could be released on a cvs server and anyone who wants it may have it and be able send in bug reports and patches to the hired manager. Basically what the company would be doing would be hiring someone who does what Linus does (not writing the kernel, but managing the kernel tree).
I agree with what your saying, I posted this to see what kind of response I would get.
I've thought about this and other problems mostly on my way home from work on the train, and can find no good solution, one that works on all sides. It just completely bugs the hell outa me that no one has figured it out yet.
It's problems like these that you really need to follow your instinct on which course to take.
I ask why this is. Why is it that the culture and society that exists for the most part in the US has the ability to single out a group of people who are not only smarter than most but also more independent.
I believe that it's the inherent fear of the unknown and strange that causes this, which I feel comes from the strange and slightly ironic Christian background. Ironic because most people here (in the US) say they are Christian, but yet at the sametime support most social and moral ideals that are against it (against as in not what is normally considered traditional values of that religion). The current culture takes this fear of the independent, the non-conformer, the thinking, and the questioner and attacks them just for being. They get angered at the very fact that other people do not want to be like them and probably also afraid. It brings forth an inborn insecurity of the social order.
People are naturally lazy; they want to do the least as possible. Granted some people are not so, but for the most part this description works. People also today believe that everyone should be or is equal. I personally have no clue as to why or how this came to be considering it's just totally obvious that everyone is not. So I think than when they encounter someone with a bit more brains than the rest, they cry out in anger shouting 'HOW DARE YOU BE DIFFRENT' and strike out at the person.
So I come to what amounts to my real question. How can we as a group deal with this dilemma? How can we change the social climate in that it's ok to be smart and a free thinker? We as a group of the other must search for the answers and apply them to our lives because singling out people who think, people who question was one major reason for 'the Dark Ages' when European civilization was held hostage by corrupt priests and tyrants.
This ruling is pretty good, allowing a company to clean room something another company developed. The problem is is that Microsoft is trying to takeoever java, now Sun had the right idea by suing MS, but it's just not goning to work. What needs to happen is that Java developers need to _not_ use MS Java and hooks. The developers need to use Java products that conform to the standard and that can run on all supported operating systems otherwise the whole idea of Java is lost.
I think what people failed to notice was that this doesn't conflict at all with the FSF. This is just a way for a company to hire someone to code something that they themselves cannot. The software that was created is then relased as opensource for all to use thereafter. A suble(sic?) but important point.
I think we as a group of people need to come together and show people who and what we are. For so long we have stayed in our own groups and kept to ourselves because of feer of what would happen if we spoke out. I feel that now is the time that we should raise our voice against today's socitey and point out all the problems in it that create a culture that excludes and persecute us.
We should take a stand and cry out against the injustice that is done to us, and for once stand-up for ourselves. Not through violence like the boys in Littleton, but through peace of words. We must make people see that what they do is wrong and they we are not the bad ones, that they are the ones who would destroy us, not us them. Through our united voice via the Internet, our great tool, should we show people that we are good.
Couldn't have responded better so such drivel myself. ;)

It's a 'Pocket' bloated piece of shit, YES, JUST WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED. A way to carry shit in my pants conviently and easily! EXCELENT
(note: I really don't spell good, and I'm fine with that, are you?)
We know it doesn't pass the turning test.

From your picture you look female to me.
You do both and hope for the best.

I think that the real solution to this problem is not to ban internet sites but to ban the use of the human brain.
I mean if people stoped thinking on thier own and followed everyone else all of this would be a non issue!
SO UNITE WITH ME, BAN THE USE OF THE BRAIN!!!
DOWN WITH THOUGHT!!!
I think that if you need to surf for porn at a local libary there is something else more wrong with you than a bad porn habit.

Well it's good to know that the Amiga will live on in Press Releases and Executive Statements.
LONG LIVE AMIGA!
