Major Offtopic Rant and probably will be moderated toasted once again:

I get modded down for stating a fact? How was this flamebait? Just because I mention the meer idea that a Microsoft product may actual include an actual worthy idea, I get modded down? I guess after include something like the above, I need to have something in my sig like: "Oh yeah, but M$ still SUCKS".
I need to find a less one-sided news outlet.

Even WinXP has this feature included in their "Power Toys" and multiple desktops. Its not nearly as nice, but still exists. It might even be in Win2k. Haven't played with those "tools" yet.

Yeah, I think for the average doc writer/author/reader, anything above Office 97 is overkill. Office 2003 is great for some businesses though, as it does provide decent integration with their WSS and Sharepoint 2003 server for collaboration/document management. The problem is Microsoft, really hasn't done anything to encourage the average user to upgrade. Their marketing seems overly focused on the businesses.
When small business realize they really don't all of those collaboration features and instead get Open Office, Micrsoft is going to sink fast.

As my collaboration is just my wife and I at home, Open Office suites my needs better.

Exactly, you (or your parents) are a "tuition" paying student. You are at the University of Florida, but could easily go somewhere else. If you disaprove of something, you can always do something about it. /protest/letter writing campaign/mail local newspapers/have a student body hearing/put up posters/get alumni involved.

True, but Universities have always been extremely sensitive to academic freedom and research. I would be suprised if no protest or unwanted publicity is not garnered by this little software product. Also, given the competition for enrolling students nationwide, I wonder how quickly they will fold after receiving a "little" bad press.

    "A personal information manager"

I think you're right on the money on that one. What the open source community needs, is to create an open collaboration framework to follow (maybe based on Jabber or not). Once that is tied into Open Office/Jabber/Evolution...you would have one hell of a killer app.

I personally would like to see a brand new IDE and Language that had multi-platform support. As much as everyone berated Visual Basic as being a "tinker-toy" language, it was extremely easy to use and setup custom business processes in. Want a form with a dropdown list and a button? Click, drag, and voila. Once such a language is present on all platforms, MS .NET will become irrelevant.

    Just my $0.02.

  7. Re:My thoughts... on Linux in 2004? · · Score: 1

True, but the loudest voices in the crowd are always heard more than the reasonable voice.

All a MS marketing person needs to do is simply point at one those silly posts and say: "See? Immaturity. Would you want them writing your mission critical software?"
Simply point a PHB in the right direction and poof, there goes another Linux opportunity.

I believe that the Linux community should never compromise their goals and vision, but at the same time a little understanding of the business management would not hurt.
