    Apple is a lot like France.

    When compared to Microsoft it seems as if it is
    only trying to maintain its identity
    (as France is with the US).

    But when Apple knows that it has the upper hand
    with a smaller entity, it can be ruthless
    (as France is with its former colonies and less powerful members of EU).

    So, it is in the eye of the beholder.

    As a general rule, anytime I upgrade to the next version of any OS, I have been grateful when it did not slow things down, despite the vendor's claim to the contrary.

    It has been my experience that most lower income residents are
    not as interested in the internet, or anything else that requires
    a fair amount of reading. Entertainment, on the other
    hand is a priority for them. It would be instructive to
    study how well they are outfitted with TV's, video games, stereos,
    and other such entertainment equipment. I am not judging, just
    saying it the way that it is.

    Yes, and now you are dealing with a company that is effectively BOTH a software and hardware monopoly (to its users who are too loyal to switch) , and behaves accordingly.

    I would rather deal with the beige beast than the
    auqua beast in Cupertino. My experience with their customer relations dept is that they have little other than contempt for thier customers. Sure their hardware is sexy, but you are also stuck with their hardware monopoly too.

    Why would anyone seriously put any effort into IP "optimisation" at this level?

    Well I suppose that this person could have a very specific kind of traffic
    that might benefit from an optimisation algorithm. And if that study is for something
    like wireless, a small savings could matter a lot if it is consistent.

    If the mainstream press reported it, the headline would be something like:

    "Killer Login Virus Affecting Everyone's Computer"

    and totally skip over the specifics until the last sentence in the jump section on page 14b.

    If anything, as much as the maintream media jumps on M$ for its business practices, it too is caught in the "Microsoft is Computing" attitude in that any M$ product vulnerability must be industry-wide.

    Just look at the record as to what party brings out all of these anti-first amemndment, anti-copying, etc bills lately.

    There are many legitmate reasons to vote for Democrats, but protecting our rights in this arena has not been one of them as of late.

    1) Increased Bus Speed for faster RAM access 2) Flash memory for storage while the computer is operating. A Gig or so would be plenty. A swap with a magnetic hard drive would occur only when programs start or finish.
