    GCC can be compiled with other C compilers, unlike most stuff you can find on FreshMeat. GCC still uses K&R syntax for the code that is used in the bootstrapping process.

    Don't just complain on Slashdot. Send patches to the developers. Many developers don't have Solaris or other commercial UNIX to test their software. What is obvious to you is not always obvious to them. Help yourself. Educate developers. Next time they will think before starting a script with #!/bin/bash. An hour spent by you on bugreports will save an hour to thousands users of your OS.

    Fortunately, I'm using pine which is not susceptible to trojans. But I'll buy a dozen anyways for my colleagues still using Outlook.

    When I reinstalled Linux 2 months ago I decided not to reinstall gatos (TV software for ATI video cards). I live 2 months without TV and believe me, I don't miss it. All the news can be found on the web. I'm not using Junkbuster, but I'll install it if the ads become annoying. TV steals your time. It doesn't really entertain. And now it's going to track you. It's too much!

    By the way, I have more time to code, to listen to the music, to talk to my friends. In fact, I'm having a date tomorrow - first time since April 2000!

    If we are talking about open source:
    How many people would want to run a "translated" web server? Database? Scientific appliction? How reliable can it be? Why not recompile it natively?

    If we are talking about closed source:
    The same questions except the last one plus lack of technical support for non-native architectures at least by some vendors (e.g. Apple).

    Even if X is tunnelled but the sshd is compromized, you are screwed, because sshd knows what you are typing in xterm.

    Actually, everything you are doing on a remote compromized machine can be monitored by the attacher.

    Not only SPAM. Americans also have CVS. I thought: "Hey, they are using version control for drugs!"

    Many computer terms have another non-computer meaning in the US. For example, they are using term "mailbox" not only for e-mail!

    They haven't changed anything. There are no traces of wxWindows in the CVS version of AbiWord.

    I would even argue that OSes with secuirity holes should refuse to install, forcing the user to either install a more secure OS or manually click through the license agreement essentially accepting the liability for acting like a moron.

    Whoever has a SPARC is likely to have a better connection than a 56k modem, therefore one cannot make much money from "official" CD-ROMs. Whoever wants commercial support on SPARC can use Solaris. It's hard to compete with Sun.

    GNU/Hurd has a terrrible filesystem "standard". They are trying to eliminate /usr. I wish that the GNU/Hurd team reconciders - then "Linux Standard Base" could indeed become "GNU Standards Base"

    One should design and implement it first. If it works well and many applications support it then it may be a good candidate for a standard.

    It is difficult to imagine any law-abiding sane adult arguing against this technology.
    Sorry for a trivial answer, but somebody must answer you. I am a law-abiding sane (hopefully) adult. I am using free software on my computer. I believe that this kind of protection cannot be implemented without employing proprietary closed-source software. This would limit my ability to use free software on the new hardware. That's why I'm against this technology.
