Tesla is to Torvalds, as Edison is to Gates.

After reading the excellent book Tesla last year I feel that Nicola Tesla was the Linus Torvald of the 19th Century.
Direct Current power was king. Thomas Edison's company was lighting much of the country with his D.C. lightbulbs. A young eastern european came to work with him. Nikola Tesla. Tesla was an EE genious. Tesla told edison about his Alternating Current power and how it would change the world, edison brushed him off and cheated him out of money.
Tesla had a renewed vigor to use his AC current so he went around looking for someone to support him. Finnally he found someone in Mr. Westinghouse. Tesla worked night and day for years perfecting his A.C. power, until it was ready for primetime.
He had an exibit at the World Fair in about 1892 I think. His amazing projects were the highlight of the world's fair. People wanted his A.C. power. However, this is when the smear campaign began. Edison knew that A.C. was better than his D.C. for general use, but he was ready to anything to stop it.
Edison, and people from his company would go to cities that were thinking about adopting A.C. power and electrocute a couple of animals with high voltages, to show them how dangerous this, A.C. power was. They were probably the first FUD masters.
In the end the better technology won out. But it was long and hard. People don't know about Nikola Tesla, even though he is responsible for almost every thing related to electricity in our lives. Everyone knows about Thomas Edison. But look who won
I think SGI is going to more for linux than most people expect. They are helping us move into the Enterprise so much faster than I ever thought possible. You should look at their web page and see all the code they have contributed, it is very nice. SGI may be strugling, but they have a large cash reserve, and are staking their existance on Linux.
I hope they succed and will personally see that I get as many SGI servers around here as possible
I can't believe I have been knocked down two points. I think that I have a valid point.
If Andover wants to become an open source company, they need to show it. If you have used any of their web building sites, you know that they heavily use.gif's. This isn't flame bait, just a valid point. In addition, I don't see how it can be redundant, when I posted it, no one else had said anything about the media builder site.
Every day we pick the coolest animated GIFs to add to our extensive library, and the best of the best are featured here.

Andover.net sure doesn't seem to have a problem with gif's. I think Rob should try to talk some since into the "leading Linux/Open Source destination on the Internet."
Debian can be a real pain to install, but once you have installed it, it is by far the easiest distro to maintain. I love my debian system, and I don't think I will ever go back to RedHat

This is not true. Most of the switches in the bell network are analog switches. Lucent does not sell analog switches anymore, but the vast majority of the Bell network it using analog switches, and should be for the next 15 to 20 years. This is why you really do get a better connection using AT&T than other carriers. Analog switching. However, Lucent only sells "softswitches" now and this is a real issue
When someone steals your cell phone, and then they answer the phone before the number is changed.
Anyway, this could be a good way to sell distributed.net to companies. I know big corps would trade their extra cpu cycles for the safety of their most expensive machines. Oh, well. Just a thought

I think this was a very informative article. I believe it brought out some points that I hadn't thought of before.
Alot of us here at/. don't know everything about security already. I am a programmer and I really like to learn new things. Slashdot isn't just news. It is whatever Rob wants to post. Thanks for the great essay.
I had a College professor, Dr. Kuhlman, who would just out of the blue ask if 3.14159 wasn't good enough for us. Then he would proceed to fill the entire length of the chalk board with Pi. It was amazing and beautiful.
Hey, Inteligent people can catch up. I got my first computer, a p166, 2 years ago. I was working in a computer lab 2 months later, installed linux after 8 months, and am now working at a nice summer job due to my programming skills.
It doesn't matter if you are behind, if you are willing to learn. I picked up Java as my first programming language. Then C++, it is really nice to be able to think in terms of objects. I am a better programmer(IMHO) because I never hacked basic, or C. I think in terms of objects, and that makes me one of the most valuable progammers where I work. I believe that I have now caught up.
They might think the/. effect is a DOS attack from some "Hacker" group. I think that would be very funny.

Microsoft Win2000 server withstands cracker attempts. Though there was a small kernel fault due to a massive DoS attack from a well organized group of malicious crackers.

VMWare is slow, locks up a considerable amount of memory and requires you to buy windows.
Wine lets you run Windows binaries, buy implementing the Windows library natively. This is fast!
Wine is a Good Thing (TM)!
