In all fairness, not every Toms article sucks, but the only ones I see now are the ones that are posted here on /. I don't go there on my own anymore. The ones that have been posted as articles here on /. lately have not been up to snuff, and instead tend to be alot of words that cause you to go from page to page and look at ads. Toms is not alone in this fact, since the shakeout of 2000+, lots of sites have gone downhill or out of business since the investors and business owners are finally insisting on making money with the sites. IMHO, we seem to still have more tech/hardware sites than the market will support, thus the quality is not great. ./ itself is one of the few exceptions. Many bitch about the lamers and flamers here, but I have been on /. for quite some time, and the % of noise hasn't changed that much, mainly due to moderation. Now, I'm not saying /. is perfect, just has stayed stable in the % of lamers. ;D

Not to mention (or rather TO mention) the fact that the majority of the surface of Mars suffers from terrible temperature swings, and we haven't seen many organisms that can handle temperature swings very well, except some viruses, and most viruses need other organisms as hosts.

Yea, and hover cars. We have been promised smaller computers for 20 years now and the closest thing we have in mass production is a Dell Opti (not bad, I have one). 98% of all pci cards are still the same height as the original ISA (and S100 for that matter). The industry has put more energy into mod cases than smaller designs, and really we have to blame ourselves, since they make what we will buy. While having an aquarium built into your case has a certain degree of cool factor (inverse pun intended) we won't see smaller desktops until people DEMAND them.

We already have the technology and components to make very small and still powerful computers (ie: laptops) but people would rather spend the extra $300 (for the same power) on case mods or better speakers. Perhaps once LCD screens become standard equipment, smaller computers will become more in vogue. Until then, the size of a mid tower doesn't look so big compared to a 19" CRT. Personally I can't wait for computers the size of a CDROM drive, with midlevel+ power, I'm just not holding my breath.

IBM will be making servers with the 970 once they catch up with demand for apple. They are anticipating Quad 970s starting at $3500 for an empty box, which is very cost effective. All of this on IBM's site.

I submitted a couple of stories, plus several other /.ers as well, on this subject. Including benchmarks, etc. My understanding is that Linux is pretty much 970 ready, although some tweaking will go on. The 970 is based on their Power4 chip, and so far has shown to be a real badass. Even Apple's commercials are claiming "the most powerful home computer in the world" about their dual 2.0 box, and the benchmarks seem to back them up.

Fortunately, all the hospitals have generators (77 hospitals in NY city i believe) so it wasn't a problem. Ironically, the generators at the airports failed.

Its not panic thats the real problem, its the Lemming effect. Someone starts looting, others join, and pretty soon everyone has a brand new TV but no electricity.

Reminds me of the LA riots/Rodney King: People were driving up to stores to loot, but they would park perfectly in the designated parking places. I guess they wanted to make sure they didn't get a parking ticket :D A perfect example of how exactly people were not really mad, it was just a great excuse to get a new TV.

Actually, that is exactly my point!

Reporter: Are you mad about the power outage? Don't you think more could have been done? Who do you think is at fault?

Person: I don't know, I mean, it happens. We are just checking our neighbors making sure everyone is ok. No big deal, I'm sure they are working on the problem.

Over and over. The newsroom is talking about anger and frustration of people, but they can't seem to show anyone frustrated or mad. Of course they are showing people calmly dealing with it. The news channels don't have a choice: Everyone IS dealing with it calmly, but the newsroom reporting is saying something else. Now at 5.21am EST, the news channels are finally focusing on this. Only took them 12 hours. The news channels starting out trying to hype it, trying to show dispair and anger, and in reality, people are firing up BBQ grills and sharing, using it as an excuse to do a bit of partying.

Ironically, I think 9-11 brought this sharing/caring attitude out in most of us, especially NYers.

Well, to be honest, if it didn't sell, the media wouldn't report it that way. People LOVE catastrophe and doomsday predictions, for some odd reason.

On a similar not, I am witnessing tv hype disaster now. All the power is out in NY, and people have been calmly walking down the street to leave town. Others are "volunteering" to direct traffic, and people are obeying. People are out together in the street with candles, checking on neighbors, almost everyone is calm, even tho with the power out, getting news in was slow and difficult (like 9-11, but much milder). Sure, some will take advantage of the situation, but burglaries happen every night. On the whole, I am pleasantly surprised at how well organized it is, and how well its going so far. Its a success story on dealing, again.

Yet the news channels are TRYING to make it out to be worse than it is. They are saying how people are mad and want to know why this happened, but they can't SHOW someone saying that, they just report that its true. fox/cnn all the same.

The real irony is how calm everyone is, how they are seem to have a "oh well, can't help it, no reason to freak out" attitude even while the news reporters are almost trying to get them to.
