    A more meaty response:
In making a phone call, you actually make contact with the other person in real time. In sending an email, you type something up and click send. No personal contact is made, only interaction with a machine. Psychologically there is a difference, even if logically they are similar.

  12. Why do...? on Court to FBI - Full Public Review Of Carnivore · · Score: 1

Why do so many folks who advocate various anti-privacy schemes always bring up porn? Much porn is harmless. A person or group of people consent to be photographed in sexual situations in exchange for money. Those photographs [or videos] are then sold to consenting, responsible adults for their enjoyment. Kiddie porn is something altogether different, but why do so many constantly rail against harmless, LEGAL pornography?

When you call someone, or mail something, you make perceptible contact outside of your own home. When using the interenet, and most functions thereof, there is a perceived privacy. You are in your own home, alone or with family/friends. This leads one to view internet actions as something akin to actions taken strictly within the home. IANAL, but from my understanding, the legal systems of many Western nations is adversarial. 18. Re:Patents... on Apple Sues To Stop Leaks · · Score: 1

    1. Patents generally do not serve the public well, they keep control over item X or product Y in the sole hands of ONE company, thereby reducing competition for item X or product Y to zero since no one else can make one. [As an example, what if Ford had patented the car? Then we'd have only Fords rolling down the highway, and they could charge anything they choose to charge for them, since if we wanted one, they'd be the only place to get it.]

    2. Patents are irrelevant to this debate, since nothing leakked ahead of time about Apple's cube is really patentable [though I beleive there is a company that is trying to say it patented cube shaped computers, but to me that is even more ridiculous... what next, a company patenting a circle?]

to stop normal leaks, you fill the hole with something that stops the flow. Maybe Apple thinks reams of paperwork files by scores of lawyers will be enough of a plug. I sorta doubt it though.

Semi-related: Is it just me, or is American society becoming more lawsuit happy by the week? RIAA/Metallica sue over Napster, then the MPAA sues over DeCSS, now Apple sues over leaked pictures and info. Seems the lawsuits are getting more and more frivolous.

The reason to bother is not needing to do a forklift upgrade... I still run on a K6/2, and until these chips come out to upgraders[which i pray they do] if I want more proc. juice, I'll have to buy a new mobo with the CPU, and maybe new RAM... also, I still run some older ISA cards[do you really need PCI for a 56k modem, I think not] and many newer modos have a severe lack of ISA slots [i.e. none]. It'd be nice if I could get up to 600 mHz without having to buy half a new system.

  22. Civil Disobedience on Freenet Music Venture; Napster-like ROM Swapping · · Score: 3

"Flaunting" illegal activities is used by the masses as a way of voting with our actions, stating rather loudly that the law is wrong. Why is the law wrong?

Music: MP3's do indeed promote sales of music, as many audiophiles demand far greater quality to their music than MP3 can provide. Thus, they download a song, if it sounds interesting, they pay for the better version. Also, there is an element of 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' in that any band supporting MP3's and sharing of them will likely see their fan base and therefore revenue grow as a result.

ROMs: Ok, N64 ROMs are blatently illegal, but old, no longer published titles are simply rotting away. Many folks still love the original Final Fantasy. There's a certain crispness to Super Mario Bros. If Nintendo et al would publish some compilation of the golden oldies, then they would have a case. As it stands, they just want to keep the old stuff away from us so we are forced to buy the new stuff if we want our 'fix'.

  23. Techies aren't alone in selfishness... on Selfish Society · · Score: 1

Our whole society is selfish. In schools, self esteem is valued over achievement. In life, accountability has all but disappeared. We immediately reach out a finger of blame whenever anything goes wrong, never thinking we might be responsible for it. People endlessly jockey for promotions and postions of power, out of pure greed. 100,000 USD isn't enough for many, they have to become CEO's and get rich. to boil it down, we live in a capitalist society. Capitalism = greed. Greed = selfishness. Technology is just another tool to that end.

  24. may the mod gods have mercy on us both... on Selfish Society · · Score: 1

    2. I lived through two of the recessions you listed, so by your criteria I ought to know what I am talking about[strange criteria really, but let's play your game a moment]
    3. I grew up with less than average income [my mother was single abouyt half my legal childhood, we spent time in shelters, with relaties, etc. till my mother could get things together] yet here I am, now writing this from a University, where I will soon graduate with a degree in computer science. [3.01 QPA, 3.45 in my major, for the curious] From my experience, if you want out of bad situations, there are OFTEN ways to get out. This is not as true for the older members of society, as it is hard to retrain, and get others to accept that you do indeed know what you are talking about, but for most of the 'geek' population, there are ways. It may be hard work, but if you want it, you will work hard. I did indeed have to dig for things to get me where I am, and I will likely have a lot to do to get where I want to be. Such is the price of prosperity.
    4. Economics is not a natural phenomenon. It is man made, and therefore governed by man. The only reason there are shortcoming to our econmy are our own doing. Thus, while properity is not certain, neither is recession.
