    when I first installed pan a little over a month ago, I got nothing but segfaults, too. The latest versions (the last week or so) have been right as rain, though. I don't remember having to upgrade any Gnome packages, but then again, I reload gnome.org looking for new releases almost as obsessively as I reload /. most of the time...

    Pan is a swanky newsreader that feels a lot like Forte Agent for Windows. I'm using 0.7.2 (0.7.3 just came out yesterday), and it's pretty darn solid.

    I played a demo of Shogo and thought it was pretty cool, despite my ancient hardware at the time...hopefully I'll have a new machine built by the time it's released.

    On a related note, any news on Sierra's views re: Linux ports? I'd love it if they paid for/assisted/suggested Linux ports of some of the games that they publish...or would/do they leave that up to the companies they publish for?

    well, I'm relieved to find out that I'm not the only one who refers to the TrackPoint as a clitoris ('cause you don't mash the thing down, you move it around with a firm but gentle pressure to acheive the desired result). 'Course, I do refer to it as a pencil eraser, depending on my audience (now, let me show you how to use your new laptop, Mom...) *shudder*

    I've heard from two trusted sources that there _will_ be a Linux client...one is my boss, who just attended a Notes R5 Migration conference in Boston a week or so ago...he said that one of the speakers had mentioned that a Linux client will be released at the 5.03 revision mark (Notes is currently at 5.01). My other source worked at Iris over the summer (The people who make Notes for Lotus), and he said that they were working on a client as well...but I wasn't supposed to tell anyone that :)

    4Fronts drivers are excellent, and I think they serve a good purpose - I was just whining about being out $30 - sort of like when chip prices go down by 25-50% the day after you buy one :)

    Now, it's been a long time since I took a statistics course, but I seem to remember that you would need many more participants to get a statistically valid result.

    One of my main reasons for purchasing a ThinkPad was its sleek black finish. I remember drooling the first time I saw one - being taken in by the aura of power and respect that eminated from its cold, austere casing. I need a laptop that would be suitable for Darth Vader, not a roll of Life Savers. Sure, configurability and freedom of expression is important, but there's something to be said for tradition...

  17. Dress Code? on Whaddya want from a conference? · · Score: 1

    I think I may have convinced my company to send me to the Atlanta Linux Showcase this October. I've never attended a conference before, and I have no idea what to wear. Not that I spend too much time worrying about my appearance or anything, but I'd hate to show up in jeans and a t-shirt if everyone else is in a suit and tie, or vice versa. It's hard enough for me to be in a crowd of people - sticking out like a sore thumb would make me feel even more uncomfortable. Any advice?

    My company has gone on a domain name registration binge for some of our newer products, and some we haven't even signed a client on, "just in case" the deals go through. So, I'm forced to clench my teeth and mutter under my breath while I set our DNS up to serve a .com, .net and .org for each new domain they want. It makes me sick. At least they've stopped going through registration middlemen that charge $120 per domain...

    I've half a mind to suggest that they register .edu, .gov and .mil for each domain, but I'm afraid they'd take me seriously.

    I picked this one up about a month or so ago. I'm just starting to cut my teeth on the llama book, so a good bit of this one is slightly over my head at this point, but I like it nonetheless. Am I the only one who feels like Mel Gibson's character in "Conspiracy Theory" whenever I walk by an ORA bookshelf? I couldn't resist the impulse to pick up Learning Perl/Tk when I walked by it last week. I think it's time to cut up all my credit cards...

    I went into Comp USA Friday to pick up Red Hat 6.0, and found Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 and Suse 6.1 right next to it, as well as ApplixWare and WordPerfect 8 Personal Edition. I thought that was impressive, until I brought my *shudder* $80 purchase to the cash register... Lo and behold, Red Hat 6.0 was on the display shelf right next to the registers! (Still no Civ:CTP, though) *sigh*

    My uncle gave me this book when I was 7...I spent countless hours reading and re-reading this book until i had broken the binding. A few months ago while moving, I happened upon it in a stack of old books. Time to give it another read. "Nobody" was a favorite poem of mine - helped ease the pain of being a 9 year old geek with no friends :) My oldest nephew is 4 - it'll be time to pass it along to him soon. Thanks for everything, Shel...we'll miss you.

    I forget exactly when 3com claimed they'd support linux (someone feel free to refresh my memory, please), but i believe it was fairly recently. 3com employs 13,000 people - it can take a looooong time for a company of that size to set things into motion, especially if a sizable portion of the company is management :). My company only has 50 employees, and it seems like it takes us forever to mobilize on small projects as well as large ones. Give them a little time before we start calling for blood :)
