    If you RTA, they mention that Hubble was only able to identify elements in the atmosphere and was using a different technique. Spitzer is able to make out molecules.

    How come telemarketers who really disturb your life in some way get jackshit yet spammers get all hell let loose on them?

    I put my number on the national and state do-not-call registry. I haven't heard from even one telemarketer since. Even when I did get telemarketing calls, they were never for porn or drugs and were rarely phishing scams. SPAMers have no such inhibitions. The medium makes it far easier to deceive, cajole or harass. The vast majority of telemarleting these days are from legit businesses. The same is not true of SPAM. That's why.

    You have the right to refuse mail. I wonder what would happen if you just started refusing every piece of junk mail that came. Maybe they would decide it's easier to just not deliver any to you.

    Very few dissenters? Here's a list of more than 17,000 dissenters most of whom are qualified scientists and engineers.

    All they have are names and degrees. Just because someone has an advanced degree doesn't make them qualified. Unless you consider a dentist such as "Richmond D Norman, DDS" qualified. So where's your evidence that any of them are "qualified scientists and engineers?" Why doesn't the site list their specialties and/or job titles?

    Yikes. You should be complaining. I have DSL through a third party but on Verizon's lines. The service is rated at 768 Kbps (that's bits) down. I regularly see download speeds of 80 - 90 KBps (that's Bytes) -- so, very close to the advertised speed.

    If you're really only getting 40 kbps, there's something very, very wrong with your connection. You just have to squeak enough to get it greased.

    You can also use Darwinports to install ruby and ruby-gems and whatever DB you want. Caveats: you have to install swig if you're using sqlite, you have to change a shebang or two to avoid conflicts with the installation of ruby that ships with OS X.

    So, chip manufacturer's have adopted the Gillette approach to marketing chips. I guess it was inevitable after they went from one core to two. The only difference, I expect, is that they'll increase by powers of 2. Soon, we'll have a Intel Mach 512 Core Sensor Extreme or something :P

    Statistics can be used to lie, therefore every use of statistics is a lie.

    Interesting reasoning. If you go to college after high school, I recommend a course or two in formal logic. It'll probably be offered by the philosophy department though you might find similar courses in mathematics or computer science.

    So, the machine the simulation ran wasn't at NCSA?

    And just so people don't get the wrong idea, VMD just visualizes data. It isn't software for running simulations. I know that's not what you meant but some people might not understand that.

    Uh, this is a troll. The AC has no idea WTF he's talking about. Either that, or he's an empiricist who can't stand to see computational science steal his thunder. Plenty of proteins have been modeled using QM/MM and had the results validated by empirical studies.
