    Oh, so you haven't played Vice City then? I and 3 of my friends have encountered 8 hard crashes (no chance to save/recover) on 4 different PS2s over about 80 hours of gameplay.

    Still, I agree with you. I would rather play games on a dedicated-system than a PC, even if they are shipped with bugs these days.

    Anyone know when DirectX 9 is due? About a month ago, I heard it was on target for November release, but now I see no sign of it. Any news?

    DirectX 9 will supposedly add direct interoperability with the .NET managed runtime (except for DirectShow and DirectMusic), which I am interested in experimenting with. My hope is that the interfaces will be "compatible" with the .NET environment best practices... no more 100 character constant names in all upper case and that kind of thing... and therefore hopefully easier to program and use for a DX beginner.

    That's how American English functions, dawg. You have to be forceful with incorrect syntax, dank new phrases, and like, just plain wrong usage of words, and eventually you have your own little "who's who" entry in the dictionary (and it's free too, which is totally sweet.)

    No, but that doesn't matter. Parked airplanes sit on wheels on the ground. This thing is permantenly fixed on a pylon. Any kind of wing lift, regardless of it's enough to make the plane "take off", puts stress on the pylon holding the plane up.

    This may be obvious, but it's still pissing me off. Cable and DSL companies have just been taking and taking without letting up anything.

    Then why are you still paying for this service? You are not powerless to solve the problem. Cable/DSL is not an essential life function.

    This analogy is actually supposed to be applicable?

    1) ISPs have voluntary terms of service.
    2) Paying for/using a particular ISP is voluntary.
    3) If not being able to upload files over P2P affects your life in any real way, I am very sorry. Maybe you should have thought a little harder before accepting #1 or #2.

    What cable internet service do you get in Kuna? At least when I looked into it, cable service in Boise-proper was much faster (and induced less guilt) than the Qwest/MSN DSL garbage available.

    The reason you can't find it is that it's called "SHGetSpecialFolderPath", not "SHGetSpecialFolder." Google tends to always be a better solution than MSDN's built-in search... it's just not a mind reader. :)

    So I suppose you tried searching for "SHGetSpecialFolder" using msdn.microsoft.com's built in search?

    In my experience, Google's Microsoft-API results are *always* better than MSDN's search results... even when you're just looking specifically for MSDN documentation or whitepapers. If Google doesn't return an MSDN page high up in the results, then the info's just not on MSDN, plain and simple, unless it's only a few days old. It's not worth wasting your time with MSDN's crappy search and "Best Bets" marketing "documentation."

    So if the spyware app creator was never found... sure that person may be liable... but guess who's not getting their money back because they were using an "unsupported" program. By enumerating the software (and only including software from accountable sources) the bank eliminates liability.

    How do you suppose a bank could ever be held liable for *my* software misbehaving?

    If you're an annoymous open-source developer, who are "you"? The software can't be liable if no one knows where it comes from or what it is. Who does that leave to be liable?

    They have no place telling me what browser I can use.

    I suppose they also have no place telling you you can't break open the keypad on an ATM and wiring in your own custom interface to the PalmOS so you can do your ATM banking using that interface. They're not telling you what browser you can use... they're defining a known interface with known liability targets to their secure system. If you don't like it, don't bank there.

    My savings bank, Cahoot, ONLY EXISTS online. Their web site is as important to them as the capital branch is to a high street bank. So why do they let just any browser in? Because it's simple and it keeps all the customers happy.

    Now, is my bank _incompetent_ in your view, or are you going to take back your rash statement that banks "can't afford" to allow this?


    Sure. Care to point me to a faq that describes how money you move though the online-only interface is FDIC insured, and/or a detailed customer/bank liability plan? Then I might reconsider.

    Indeed. I would have looked miffed too, and probably would have sat down, but not before singing "I'M SORRY MAMA <offkey> I DIDNT MEAN TO HURT YOO<offkey>OOOUUUU<offkey>.     Hilary Rosen asks "Put up your hand if you download and burn music" (most hands go up). She then asks "Keep you hand up if you buy more music because of it" (many stay up). She gets worried and immediately asks some different and confusing set of people to put their hands up, causing everyone to look miffed, and everyone putting their hand down)

    I call BS on this. What was the "different and confusing" set she asked for? I have a feeling it was the interesting part of this exchange... pop culture already tells us we should raise our hands for these first two questions.

    If you fake your browser, and then somehow you lose money using the online interface though a bug in the interface and/or your browser, I bet *you* will be the one caring what they say they support.

    You must have skipped over the part where he said "unaccountable." Who's to blame if 1000s of people use SkippyWeb, a new browser written anonymously by scammers in Nigeria that steals bank account numbers and pins? Well... that leaves us with the bank, and the customer. Neither option is good for bank business.

    It doesn't matter whether the browser "works flawlssly" or not. Banks don't want the slightest possiblility of being liable (or appearing at fault) for people losing money. (Bank lets you use a browser that is written to send hackers your bank account number and pin) = (Bank looks really bad). (Bank lets you use a browser that has a bug that results in money transfer requests being posted twice to the server) = (Bank loses customers).

    Quite honestly, I'm surprised banks don't release a custom version of Mozilla, or a proprietary non-web app to customers, and restrict interaction to only that application.

    The number of potential web customers a bank loses due to not supporting GNUMyFavoriteBrowser 5.123r43b5, regardless of how good it is, is irrelevant compared to what they could lose if they do.
