No, Microsoft does not have a monopoly on anti-virus software, they just have a monopoly on virii. They won't run on anything but Windows!
Yes, yes of course! Now I see it. So, what they're doing is, they are acquiring all the AV companies, so that they will get extra profit, because of their virii monopoly. And let's face it. You can put one AV program on the server... OR you can put one on each of your clients (which run windows, naturally) - more profit from licenses.
Disney World doesn't need any more incentive to keep its rides safe. If the rides are not safe, people will not come to Disney World. If the people do not come to Disney World, they will go out of business.
Couple of weeks ago I'd agree. Later on, a friend pointed out to me (we had a similar discussion) that this only works for products or services which can result in an immediate and obvious harm to the consumer.
For example. A company is selling sunglasses without UV filtering. This may lower the cost, but it will slowly damage your eyes. Most people wont notice at first. Cataracts will develop slowly, and then people will slowly trace their conditions to the company. In the mean time sales go up due to lower cost than competition.
Another example could be pesticides or some other thing in food, or asbestos in building material and clothing. Or cigarettes, which are still legal. Anything that will take long years before damage becomes apparent.
For things like that you need some higher authority that will prevent companies to cut corners where people get hurt.
The OP requested simpler kernel configuration. <begin rant> XML with its fancy crap and, let me guess, java editors or whatever is not simpler. Why do you have to complicate things way the f*** out there when a simple text file "just works".
Now I have a strong feeling that I'm not the only one who gets BP up a few notches when someone presents a bright idea how to "simplify" things with XML. That's why he got modded up. In my opinion. (See threads above for opinion wars.)
Are the feds going to bust in on Aunt Millie just because she didn't install Service Pack 2, hot fix KB123456789, and so allowed spammers to use her name to send their crap?
No, but her ISP should have the right to temporarily disconnect her from the internet. Why? Because she (or her computer, but that's her responsibility) is causing problems on the internet. It would also convince people that bad software causing worse problems is not "the way to go" (yes, i mean microsoft).
Microsoft is the only company in the world which makes "dirty tricks"? Probably not;-) I wanted to say that they are known to make them. But yeah, you're right, others might try.
The "dot" problem should be obvious too because it is against the rules to have two.s in a row. So, any time "dot"s are spoken consecutively, you'd spell out each one except the last.
So, for example, "host dot dot matrix dot org" becomes "hostdot.matrix.org" instead of "host.dotmatrix.org" ?:)
If your answer is the delay between the "dot" and the "matrix", then you can just say dot a few times and see if you get ".dotdot." or ".dot.dot".
It's not as simple as that. I'd say we'd need some sort of escape phrase.. you know, like "host \dot dot matrix \dot org". Or perhaps more appropriate "host dot \dot matrix dot org".
Why is depending on the internet for communications a bad idea? It's fault tolerant, a lot of back up ways. On the other hand other systems, just go down and you're stuck.
Yeah, it's really nice if you're multihomed AS. I don't remember when was the last time that my phone line failed. As for the internet... three days back (for an hour).
I don't know if this is normal or it's just that.si ISPs tend to suck. I'd like to think that in a critical moment I'll be able to call emergency hotline (eg. 911 for americans) if I ever switch to VoIP.

"he said building a new network on top of the old".. just somehow I don't think that's really innovative way of handling the the problems
;)
They did it with their cpus and it worked so far
But I agree, that's a bad way to handle problems.
Microsoft is the only company in the world which makes "dirty tricks"? ;-)
Probably not
I wanted to say that they are known to make them.
But yeah, you're right, others might try.
"They tried and failed?" "They tried and died."
Look, if it wasn't Microsoft...
they probably wouldn't try any dirty tricks.
Or it just wouldn't work.
Or they'd get sued.
