  6. Dell's Inspiron 7k's on Review of the Sony Vaio PCG-X9 · · Score: 1

I have owned a Dell Inspiron 7000 for well over a year now and I have nothing (that) bad to say about it.

Rage Pro LT (with D3D and OpenGL support; and dual monitor, video-out support)

The new 7500 can carry 75gigs. That right. 3 25gig harddrives ( one internal, 1 in each of the two bays--- which means no battery at the time).

The 14.1 inch LCD is beautiful. The 15" ones seem like overkill, but the new higher res screens may change your mind.

Great service ( I had a CDdrive burn out and they sent a replacement within 2 days ).

But the seller is: You can run Linux on it. Dell appears to be providing Linux support on this machine. (ahem).. only the new 7500, not the older 7000's. (major minus in my book) Better watch your back, a year later and they stop providing updates for your machine.

Only complaints are: Internal modem is a winmodem. Gotta hate those touchpads... only 1 USB port. The weight. This thing weighs in at a hefty 9.5 pounds (w/o accessories).

A second option is Dell's Inspiron 3700. More or less the same product, shrunk. Bad news: You can't play Half-life or Q3 too long because the video card gets too hot. You'll start to see artifacts on the screen. There are some other quirks in this system too. I don't think I'd buy one of these machines. It may weigh less, but to me, it looks like a toilet seat cover.

    >>I am already fairly skilled at program design in general (patterns, architecture, etc.), and am in fact currently designing some systems at work in addition to my game at home.

Design is incredibly important. But this book claims to be about "programming" which I believe is generally considered to mean lower-level implementation as opposed to "design", "analysis", etc.
    >>

Ok, now I understand where you're coming from and see your point. "Don't judge a book by its cover" takes on new meaning with programming books, I guess.

"That lack of focus in itself is a flaw. I found the discussion of game ideas interesting, but I wanted a book devoted to the construction of RTS games, not their design."

Ok, I may be taking this out of context, or misinterpreting your point. But, isn't one of the most important aspects of writing a computer game, the written design? I've read several articles (Post Mortem) in Game Developer Mag. These articles are written by a game dev. after the release of their game, discussing problems and successes. More often than not, the authors have found that the lack of a thorough and concrete design had negatively impacted the development of their product. Sure it isn't something that seems fun when you love to code, but at some point you need to come to realize that you just can't sit down and "hack" things out.
I, like you, do like to see implementation as part of my learning process. Infact, this is more lacking than books written on design. I was actually thinking about picking this book up when I saw it. I think I'll stay away from it, or just read it in my local library (aka Barnes & Noble ;-) ).

  11. Pulling itself in many directions? ***spoiler*** on Review:Star Wars:The Phantom Menance · · Score: 1

I try to go in and come out of a movie without looking too critically at it. For me, analyzing everything ruins the fun that watching movies is.

I don't remember where exactly I heard this suggestion, but it came across like this: "George, in telling this story, seems to jumping from one idea to another; not lasting too long on one thing.. as if becoming disinterested." (radically paraphrased)
This quote has been stuck in my mind for the past couple days. The more I think about the movie, the more I see all the subplots rushed and plentiful.
    1. Darth Maul is here one minute, gone the next. He seemed more like the Ensign in a classic StarTrek episode who always wheres a red uniform and dies on the away mission (guarunteed). Maul's face has been shown everywhere. His background, story is no where to be found. Yes, you can look at him as the Bobba Fett of EP1, but come on... Fett will(should) get his story told in EP2.
    2. Qui-Gon Jinn is another. He seems like a very intriguing character, but where is his background? Obi-wan states: "You can't disobey the council again.." Again? What was the first time? Yes, this could be explained in EP2 or EP3. Another dispossable character?
    3. Jar Jar. People have told me he was annoying. Again, I was looking forward to enjoying the movie and didn't pick up on this. It appears Jar Jar was for the kids to enjoy. I guess.
    4. Rush rush rush. I don't think George could have fit more story into this first movie. Yet, I'm left with the impression that much is missing and what was put in was not fleshed out.
    5. Political messages/ racial dipictions, etc.. throw your ideas out the window. Enjoy the movie. Diversity should be praised, not criticised. Those who saw such politics in this movie would appear to have more issues of their own than with the story and its characters.

Again, I went in to enjoy the movie. I did just that (with the exception of a few people who had too much to drink). Would I see it again? You bet. Could it have been better? Under the circumstances, maybe not. I think George maybe in some trouble here. He's trying to tell his epic pre-story in 3 episodes. EP1 could have been fleshed out in two movies. Did this 'rushing' take away from the enjoyment? Nope.. I kept my arms and legs inside the ride at all times.

btw- I couldn't resist buying one of those lightsabers.. too cool ;-)
